On hikes even in -30ēC after a Km my jacket and sweat shirt will be open and there's just a bat\re layer of t-short between -30 and my skin. The worst thing that can happen is you sweat and get wet. Then you may freeze when you stop to rest.

I'm sure with his help you won't need mine. :D

I've been having a hard time putting those flip top mittens since I dropped my 60-250 when it just squirted out of my fingers because my flip tops didn't have enough grip. I know I should use them, but it makes me feel sick seeing them. I had them on yesterday, but I knew I wouldn't be changing lenses.

Yesterday was a "take few F 70-210 sample photos in out in the -20ēC weather." day. Really, if you're dressed, it's not as bad as it sounds.
2018-F-70-210-chickadee-1 by Norm Head, on Flickr

It's -21ēC here now and as warm as it's going to get today. I absolutely have to get off my butt and walk those border collies, while it is "warm."

It's true, my most memorable images are taken with all different formats. 8x10, 4x5 645, 6x6, 35mm, film, 1:1.2 both ILC (Q-S1), Bridge (XG-1) and compact WR (Optio w90), APS-c (*ist D- K-3), and FF digital (K-1). Some of my most artistic were taken with 35mm film. I think my mind was more open to creativity then.

I've woken up sore after a 15 km hike through the bush carrying 5 pounds of camera equipment, and the last two hours were pretty much agony. How far have you carried camera gear? I've seen guys carrying 20 pound rigs for kilometres. Hay is tough, but in no way comparable, One is constant weight, one is lift and drop.

Personally I'd rather do hay. But then I was in my 20s then and I'm 70 now, so my opinion of how hard each is may be a little distorted. :D

So let's leave it that I'd rather do hay all day in my 20s-50s than carry 5 pounds of camera gear for 15 km through bush (all day) in my 60s-70s.

Those hunting overalls and snowmobile boots are critical gear in cold weather. As are a really good warm set of mittens to put your hands in when they get cold, as well as a lightweight merino wool gloves that you can manipulate the camera controls with, and that you don't have to take off to put the mittens on. If you're going to be sitting still, your coat needs to be twice as heavy as if you were hiking. Big puffy down is preferred around here.

Just look FA 50 1.4 (220gm) to the DA*55 1.4 (375 gm) and DFA 50 1.4 (910 gm)

On the other hand telephotos are going the other way. My Tamorn 300 2.8 is six pounds (and was resaonably popular in Nikon mount in 2002)

The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is a fraction of the size of most full-frame 500mm lenses, freeing you to be as nimble as your subjects.
https://cdn-4.nikon-cdn.com/e/Q5NM96RZZo-fTYlSZPBjlMhlFa1VHARsAMHUXbQi5YoJU7...E-PF-ED-VR.png

3.2 pounds. Half the size, of my Tamron.

.

Imagine a 500mm ƒ5.6 PLM. I know anyone who has used the 55-300 PLM is already drooling.

They can be heavy enough to suck the joy out of photography however. :D

I never had to balance a bail of hay on top of a tripod. :D

I'm not complaining, but don't ask me anyway. Back in my 20s I help a neighbour farmer with is hay in the summer, he cleaned my drive way after the two or three worst snowfalls of the winter. Been there done that. These days, I just buy bigger snow blowers.

I have a few completely unrepeatable stories from my days as a farm hand in hay season. Amazing the stories people tell when doing boring stuff.

He must have done some training in education. It's amazing how many would be educators don't do that as matter of course. Of course the downside of that is the kids who got what they needed from the lecture, go and do the assignment and hand in work as good (usually better) as students who need more time do. The class can get a little boring for them. Self guided computers based research bonus assignments for those kids while others were still slaving away on the assignments was a god send.

Ya, I usually start over the top and work backwards from there. :D

But usually people understand my point. (Although it's amazing how often people focus in some little digression that has nothing to do with main point.) :D

Personally, I've had so many great BiF shots ruined because half the bird was out of the frame, I find the wide angle approach refreshing. When the weather get above -20ēC I might give it a try with the K-1 and DA*55 1.4. Maybe the framing isn't optimal, but I've done a lot worse.

He used a mule to carry his stuff.

He shoulda said "the best camera is the heaviest your mule can carry." :D

I've seen guys with tripods fitted on their ATVs carrying huge amounts of weight. But if I can get an image of a critter, up close with a 300mm set up my images will be better. Atmosphere is a bitch.

I've never had a problem with my K-3 even at sub -30ēC, but battery life is extremely short, you may only be able to take as few as 130 images. A couple extra batteries is good.
I only take out weather sealed lenses when it's that cold, I've had zero condensation issues.

Going out to take those images it was -20ēC. The snow is like that because none of it has melted this winter. :D

I really liked my FA 35-80, but when I got my DFA 28-105, it rarely got picked up again. Then my wife started taking the DFA 28-105 out all the time on her K-5. Get going, and then find out what you really need. For us, that DFA 28-105 is some kind of pinnacle of lens design. Small enough to carry, sharp enough you don't miss primes. And there's the FA 1.4, DFA 50 1.4 and DA* 55 1.4 if you like narrow DOF. A lens for every price range.

I was inspired to go out an snap a few more F 70-210 images for you using the K-1.

Not bad in the long end but not spectacular. As is typical of this type of lens, as the barrel goes longer the lens gets less sharp.

Nothing wrong with it at 70mm

The out of focus areas aren't the smoothest, but it is ƒ8.
2018-F-70-210-chickadee-3 by Norm Head, on Flickr

2018-F-70-210-chickadee-2 by Norm Head, on Flickr

This one near the closest focusing distance... really, not bad at all.
2018-F-70-210-chickadee-1 by Norm Head, on Flickr

It is noisey and when it locks focus it will almost break your wrist with a loud "ka thunk", but if you're looking for a budget lens it's one of the best. I doubt you'll find a better FF telephoto for the price.

More on this lens here.

The F-70-210 is acceptable barely but it's a fringe monster in the wrong conditions.. I got mine for $60 and it's keeper. if for no other reason to be an emergency telephoto in a tightly packed camera bag. Taken on shopping trip. A chance unplanned encounter, having it there was awesome. This one taken on a K-3. For the price they go for you won't find anything that matches it.

I don't have a 42-50, almost bought one once but got the 18-105 instead.

Here's a similar type and age lens, the FA 35-80 on the K-1.
2016-12-Whiteny-2 by Norm Head, on Flickr

I think the 24-50 might be even better, but just guessing.
