Strap stud question..what holds it in?

From the ME Super service manual the strap hook on that side is held in with part #23900-C81 Strap Hook Retainer. The strap hook, part #23900-O-A6 on the other side is held in place with a black nickel plated M1.7 5 screw (designated CNS 1.7 5, I have no idea what the difference is between CSS, CNS, CNM and CNM-L screws are).

How to repair? Either get a replacement O-A6 or remove the bit of the retainer screw by drilling out or using a screw extractor. Obtain a replacement C81. Remove the top cover and replace the parts.

Or for a non-reversible repair glue the strap hook in with a epoxy resin. Something like JB Weld.

Warning: LR 44 batteries

Humbug. I used to buy Costco's Kirkland brand akaline AA batteries. Supposedly they are made by Duracell. The reason I stopped buying them is they burst the end caps. Or at least the last batch I bought.

Here's the scene. One afternoon I'm sitting in front of my computer furiously typing up some reports. I hear a muffled pop. No big deal, perhaps a car backfiring. Then I hear another one. Since I was slightly on the alert due to the first one it seems as if the pop was indoors. There's nothing in the location that the sound seemed to have come from except a two AA cell Maglite flashlight. I pick it up and it's warm to the touch. I open it up and with difficulty dump out the remains of the Kirkland AA cells with the end caps blown off. Within a couple weeks I hear a few more pops - all Kirkland alkaline AA batteries from the same batch with end caps blown off and swelling. I removed all the batteries from my various devices and replaced them with Duracells and later Eneloops. No more Kirklands for me even though many people swear by them.

As I recall there is mention of Duracells bursting in other threads.

The problem it seems is the lack of vents on the batteries to alleviate gas build up or cases strong enough to withstand the pressure.

Is it my imagination that photo files loose sharpness going from camera to computer?

Definitely. When using manual focus lenses even slightly out of focus shots can look sharp on the LCD unless you enlarge the image. You can always set the instant review to start at a certain magnification.

I'd go for the repair offer. One PF member reports buying the replacement assembly from US Camera and it had a white solenoid. Even if it doesn't and you get another 3 years life out of your camera before it starts to fail again you've hit what is probably the average life expectancy of a modern consumer level camera and should be looking for a replacement anyway. You could always try CR Kennedy again and see if they will still cover the repair.

IMHO analogies involving failures in automobiles aren't very appropriate. Due to the potential for great property damage, bodily injury or even death that failed components in cars could cause the industry is highly regulated. Other than the potential for property damage and injury from exploding or burning batteries these sorts of regulations are not in place for DSLRs.

Lens Release Button Steps for Repair

You'd have to contact a repair center for an estimate. Since the camera is out of warranty you can use some place like Advance Camera in Oregon. I suspect you'll probably end up paying at least $150 USD because of the amount of tear down that needs to be done to get to the parts.

Images on the LCD screen are downsized which will always look sharper.

Try zooming the view out (downsize the image) on your computer, it should look sharper.

The AF drive shaft should be withdrawn with the lens release button. Try marcusBMG as switching to MF will withdraw the shaft as well.

Is this a lens with a "Ricoh pin"?

K-1 Mark II processing times

The K-3 has less megapixels. Less numbers to crunch.

Relying on memory or "impressions" on how long something takes is hardly reliable. For one you may have an expectation that the K-1ii to be faster thus pay more attention to the processing time making it "feel" to take longer.

Maybe someone with a K-1 and K-1ii will run some tests using your methodology and give us a more accurate appraisal.

Off exposures could be from forgetting to press the green button first or a fault in the camera.

Just to make sure is the mount on the lens bare metal vs coated, e.g. shiny metal vs dull or black? Green button metering doesn't always work with a non-conductive lens mount.

The night mode just puts the LCD in monochrome black and red correct? Although reduced it could still output enough light to illuminate your face. Wear a ski mask or cover your face with camo makeup.

vintage teleconverters on modern zoom with no aperture ring? Help needed.

As pointed out above an "A" type TC with electrical contacts will allow you to control the aperture except on KAF4 lenses. The TC will not compensate for the speed or f-stop loss, nor will it vary the maximum aperture on variable aperture zooms (e.g. f4-5.6 zooms). There are AF TCs from the KAF film era that have screw drive shafts and the 7th "data" pin but they are sort of rare to find. To work with KAF4 lenses the TC would need to have the power zoom contacts as well.

Porst for Pentax are either M42 or K-mount (non-A). Ether should work fine in manual mode with green button metering even on a K-30/50 with a failing control block.

Porst lenses were made mostly by Cosina but other makers include Balda, Franka, Fuji, Mamiya, Taron, and Yashica.

They offered a 55mm f/1.2 lens in K-mount.

You have the display playback set to show overexposed (red) and underexposed (yellow) areas where image detail is being lost.

The example above even at ISO 400 a shutter speed of 1/2500 would require a very bright scene. My guess is the shot is way underexposed.

What lens are you using and what mount?

You might try contacting Ricoh. In the past they have been willing to cover the repair outside of warranty for US customers. Ricoh typically requires you to send the camera to Precision for evaluation before deciding whether to cover the repair or not. Precision usually charges around $150 USD for the repair.

Large eyecups are optional items for many Nikon cameras, and the Pentax MF cameras. Large eyecups round or teardrop are easily found as after market items.

If you wear eyeglasses you can buy clip/slip on safety side shields painted black to block out light from the side.
