Carl Zeiss Jena medium format lenses on K-1 and 645D

The Arsatwas made at Arsenal Works (or following up workshops) in Kiew, Ukrainia . Prakticar is a brand of VEB Pentacon. Most Prakticars were made at Feinoptische Werke (FOW) H. Meyer, Görlitz ( Niederschlesien) . Görlitz is a town in state of Saxony near the polish Border. In late 1980ies photooptical workshops in the former GDR were concentrated in the VEB Pentacon, Dresden brand , which was part of the VEB Carl Zeiss, Jena combinate (concern). But most of the Prakticar lenses were manucfactured in Görlitz and were Meyer constructions, some in Bukarest at FOM (e.g. the Standard 1.8/50mm Prakticar for 135 Cameras). Up from 1985 only some were made at Carl Zeiss workshops in Saalfeld (Thuringia) (eg. Vario-Pancolar/Vario Prakticar 35-70mm, Vario Sonnar/ Vario Prakticar 80-200mm). In the End of the 1980ies all Prakticar -B lenses from VEB Carl Zeiss for 135 camaras were labeled as "Prakticars", till the mid 80ies these lenses had still the tradional Zeiss names (Flektogon, Biogon, Biometar, Pancolar , Tessar, Sonnar, Vario-Pancolar, Vario Sonnar) The label for medium format lenses were never merges till 1990. The labeling was Prakticar = VEB FOW Meyer, Görlitz; Flektogon, Biometar, Sonnar = VEB Carl Zeiss Jena, factory Saalfeld.

I use an adapted Hasselblad FE 4.8/ 60-120mm on my Pentax 645. Excelent lens from moderate wide to moderate tele - a typical reporting lens set (in 135 terms 35mm-90mm the reporting duo lens set ;) ) Only a little bit heavy . :(

in the "100mm range" the Contax 645 MF system had only two lenses : _ Carl Zeiss Planar 80 mm f/ 2 C645 and _Carl Zeiss Apo-Makro-Planar 120 mm f/ 4 C645 Datasheets Contax 645 Lenses | Download Center Even if you could couple a C645 to Ptx645 mechanical only the Apo-Makro-Planar has manual f-stops to stop down.. But you can easily adapt the Carl Zeiss Oberkochen Planar 3.5/100mm for Hasselblad V (Models C,CF,CFi) via an HB->Ptx645 adaptor.

The confirmation works (my camera 645N) with all adapted lenses (P6 , Hasselblad V). I have also tested it with a rented 645Z.

Fotodiox Pro Adapter Hasselblad V to Pentax 645 (Pro HB-PT645) -A short review- - PentaxForums.com

As far as I Know there are 4 adaptors on the market:
_ Kipon, a chinese made adapter
_ Rayq[al] (=Fotodiox) chinese providence
_ Rugift an east european made adapter (Russian or Ukrainian origin)
_ Zörkendörfer ( “Zörk”), a german manufacturer.

Unfortunatelly Novoflex won´t make a Habla -> Pentax 645 adaptor. I asked them. Novoflex has former produced pars for Hasselblad - this would be the best build quality.

If you will test the Kipon - please add a short review.
I looked on the pictures in the Kipon add - but the lock (which is the weakest part) wasn´t good to see

thanks Ray for the informatiion that there are Leitax mounts ZF -> PK - I didn´t know that. Never the less the 25./2.0 (the modern type with aspherical lens, FLE and "Sonderglas" ) would be imho the better choice. ,) Zeiss Distagon T* 25mm f/2.8 ZF (FX) - Review / Test Report But as I know the Zeiss Distagon 25/2.8 focuses from 0.17m , you can use it like a macro lens - the Distagon 25/2.0 not (0.25m)

Ray, the Carl Zeiss Distagon 25/2.8 for Contax/Yashica is an "older" construction (late 70ies ). The construction was also used with the Distagon 25/2.8 for ZF/ZE/ZK The recent ZF/ZE Distagon 25/2.0 is more modern (11 lenses 10 groups, aspherical lens, special glases (higher dispersion), FLE (floating lens elements) design. The Contax C/Y MM you can modify with an Leitax mount for the K1 . At the ZF/ZE it isn´t possible (as far as I know). An maybe alternative ist the ZS (M42) mount (industrial lens) and a K-adaptor Please write to your local Carl Zeiss centre that you want this Distagon 25/2.0 in PK mount ;) They will answer you only blabla, but hope dies last ...

Tuco, Carl Zeiss ZF.2 lenses are chipped . If you uses ist on a Pentax dSLR (K1?) you have to change the mount (Leitax) I don´t believe that would be better to handle than a unchipped lens - and i don´t know if there are Leitax mounts for ZF.2 lenses. Second in Zeiss nomenclature a "Biogon" (ZM for Leica M) is a real wide angel lens, a "Distagon" always a lens in retro wide angle design- you can´t really compare this two construction principles.

"Pentax K-1 im Praxiseinsatz" (online article in german language)

you are right ;) .
In my opinion the most Photoscala comments are more aggressive /hateful than in moderated forums. If you want to send a comment, there is a captcha but no moderation and you are anonymous*. A lot of posters become in this situation unscrupulous – and PS is a place of flaming brand „wars“ of [nikon, Canon, Sony ...] fan -boys.

Despite of the reader comments the articles are better than in the most german online photo mags ( despite the swiss fotointern which has a special swiss view). And it is as far as I know the online photo mag in Germany which has the most readers.

Good remark
When Nikon released the D800 they published a brochure with lens "recommendations" suitable for the D800/D800E
There were not about a dozen from Nikon which are "suitable".
If you add the Zeiss Oti ZF.2, Apo-Sonnar ZF.2 and the 2or 3 Milvi ZF.2 which fit to the D800/D800E/D810, and some Sigma Arts - its not alot more . than Pentax offers.

These lenses are not consumer lenses, but for technical use [surveillance, robotics......] You can order them from Carl Zeiss direct. But note they would be a little bit more expensive than the consumer lenses and they a a little bit different from consumer lenses. E.g. you can fix the focus with a screw ....

Bob that´s right (but no recalculation more a modification).
Exactly this version (Version"4") of the VEB Carl Zeiss Jena Biometar 2.8/80mm should be build as a Biometar 4.0/85mm. A first [Test-]batch was made in this version, which is now a collectors item.

Carsten Bobsin and Rene Schulz wrote in their Praktisix/Pentsix article series in Photodeal (a german journal for analoge Photo gear):

QuoteQuote:

...
..

source: Carsten Bobsin, René Schulze (2012): Zeiss-Objektive mit Praktisix-Anschluss. Photodeal III/2012, p.64-65

In the late seventies the incorparation of VEB Pentacon and Meyer Görlitz in the VE Kombinat Carl Zeiss
was obvious.
So Carl Zeiss Jena lost his interest in relabeling the modified Biometar on marketing* purposes.

I think we should accept Christa Dietschs advice - even if f2.8 is still engraved** on the lens on marketing purposes.

*As a late (and not in the GDR) born, I wonder always that there was anything like a marketing department in the VEBs ,
but I was told there exists even ads in TV ;) .
** on Carl Zeiss Oberkochen lenses it would be printed :D - and eraseable without problems. :D

Biogon is in Carl Zeiss speech a real [non-retro] wide angle lens.

I think you mean the VEB Carl Zeiss Jena Biometar 2.8/80mm ;) , which they produced for the KW/VEB Pentacon Praktisix/ Pentasix (P6) medium format (MF) camera.
I hope you know it`s some of the weaker Carl Zeiss lenses. Better not to use it at f2.8. ;)
In the seventies Carl Zeiss produced a variation of the lens in 4.0/80mm - which was imho more honest - but not so good for marketing.
VEB Carl Zeiss lost his honesty, when they took over VEB Pentacon in the early eighties. :D

Personnally I use it at my film Ptx645N - I´am coming from the P6 system - if I need a small travelling lens. The Zeiss CF 3.5 /100m is better - but bigger.

To add - a fourtnight ago I had the opportunity to use a Ptx 645Z in workshop as rent. I took all my lens with me , from whom I expected trouble* with the Ptx645Z sensor. The badest lens wasn´t the Biometar 2.8/80 .

* in german " Problemkinder" which sounds better than troubleshooters ;)
