Is the 43mm really that bad? (APS-C)

On a K-5 get the DA-40. At f/2.8 it’s better than the 43 at that aperture and it’s so much fun to use. The colors are wonderful.

Longer Telephoto Lens for the K-1

The DA 55-300 PLM is very good. Yeah, it’s a crop lens, but that’s not a bug, it’s a feature. It crops to 450mm on the long end. It’s relatively small and the focus is fast. Very fast. F/6.3 on the long end is a definite drawback in non-daylight conditions. Other than that it’s a terrific lens.

Cactus V6II and RF60X - On Camera Setup

The Cactus RF60x is not only a flash, it’s a transmitter. There is no reason to put a V6 ii on your camera and then the RF60x. Buy two RF60x’s, one on and one off camera or one RF60x and one V6ii. Use a different ttl flash on the V6ii off camera (Canon, Nikon, Pentax...j. With the lastest firmware all will work with Pentax cameras as ttl flashes.
That said, the V6ii is easier to manipulate as the transmitter on the camera than the RF60x, it’s what it is made for, so... put the V6ii on the camera and put an AF360 Pentax on top (used for <$100 on eBay) to be used as pass through P-ttl. It’s less complicated than it sounds. The Cactus system ROCKS!

K1 users: what lenses do you use?

My travel kit usually consists of the three amigos (FA 31, 43 and 77), and the FA 20. If I think thereís a chance of needing something long Iíll add the 55-300 (PLM version) and shoot in crop mode. If Iím expecting tight quarters Iíll bring the 17-28 fisheye. If Iím expecting rain Iíll use the D FA 24-70 or the D FA 28-105.

Photographing a band in a bar

Be sure to turn on Highlight Alerts and watch for the dreaded flashing red of blown out highlights. I’ve shot several bands and the spotlights are pretty bright compared to the rest of the room. Set your Exposure Compensation somewhere around -2.0 and -3.0.

Auto ISO, the parameters will depend on conditions (e.g 100-800 or 100-3200...). And program line to mtf, Iíll adjust aperture if I feel the need to change the DOF.

Pentax Photo Gallery (PPG) not responding

It’s a shame that it is going by the wayside, there were many beautiful pictures there and I was proud to be a part of it. Every once in a while I felt unworthy and thought of the Groucho Marx joke, “I wouldn’t want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member.”
(I may not have the quote exactly right but you get the idea.)

Question: FA 77 and moon, exposure problem
Posted By BWG

When shooting the moon think of the sunny sixteen rule. It’s a face in direct sunlight, so you shoot it at f/16 and your shutter speed is one over your ISO (f/16 at 1/100th of a second). Even that may over expose a little on a full moon, but it will be close.

Moire

I went to Long Beach last weekend and this gray heron was posing for me (the local fishermen told me his name is Larry). I didn't think to activate the AA Filter Simulator. Yeah, there a "little" moire in the shot. It cleans up okay in Lightroom using the color noise reduction slider in the detail panel. Live and learn as they say.

I feel your pain, but only a little. I love my K-1, my K-3 and the Limiteds. I own all eight. The only hole in that lineup is a SWA full-frame. I bought an FA 20 f2.8 off of eBay. It’s fantastic and will be fine until the D-FA 19 f/1.9 Limited comes out (a prime lens needs to be a prime number). When they release it many of us will cringe at the cost...as we put it in the shopping cart and wait the excruciating two whole days for it to arrive on my front porch. In the meantime I’ll continue to take shots other brands can’t.

What is the purpose of TAv Mode on Pentax DSLRS?

It’s a great feature and works extremely well on the K-1 (and probably the Kp) with it’s superior ISO capabilities. I went to a rodeo last week and it was perfect for the varying light in the arena.
And boriscleto, you made me spit my coffee - heh!

The 28-105 is terrific. Take a few thousand pictures with it and then sort them by focal length. Buy a prime at or near that length and off you’ll go.

“What would I do?” What did I do is the question. I bought mine this summer. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT! It’s magic. I went out and got the FA 43 (more magic). The FA 77 is next. Now all we need is a full frame equivalent to the DA 15 (more magic)

High ISO capabilities isnít just used for low light. Higher ISOs is very handy when shooting wildlife because shutter speed is so important. Try shooting a bird in flight or even a twitchy squirrel at f/8 without pumping up your ISO. Your shutter speed will be so low everything will be blurry.

Cactus V6 Flash Sync Speed Problem
Posted By BWG
Replies: 6
If you get a V6II and upgrade to the latest firmware (for TTL) it will work great with your RF60 flash, perfect exposure every time, however; it will NOT be able to communicate with your older V6 with a flash on it. You’ll have to wait until Cactus releases that firmware upgrade. They don’t have an estimitated release date.

If you can afford it, get the DA70 f2.4.
And don't worry about crop factor unless you go full frame someday in the future. Then, and only then will you notice the difference.

TTL or P-TTL is great, but you are somewhat at the mercy of the flash's "brain." Manual flash is much easier to control your results. If you don't already have one, buy a light meter. A light meter is an essential camera accessory for flash photography.

Dear Pentax, future firmware upgrade - re: auto crop

I would love to have the option in Auto Crop Mode of it being lens specific. Off for the DA40, DA70, DA60-250 & DA300, but applied to the DA21 and DA15. My choice in the menu similar to focus tuning.
