Fun with the K-S1

That's on hold now... but the only reason I'd go with a M4/3 camera is if my Pentax cameras are too big. Meaning, I'd go for something pocketable. I don't think the GX80 is. I'd be thinking about something more like a GM1. The largest I'd probably consider would be a GF6.

But first I'll see if a belt camera bag is practical, to carry the K-S1 with perhaps the 21 Limited (with maybe the 70 in a side pocket)...

I have been thinking about buying a small M4/3 camera with a pancake lens to use as a pocket camera... but now I"m tending towards just buying a small belt camera pouch and use it with a limited (or two) - the 21 and 70 are so small I should be able to get around with both of them. Any tiny camera bag made to hang a small film camera around your waist should be good for the K-S1 - here it is how small it is, even compared to my P30T...

The Pentax lenses are already based on older models of these lenses, that Tamron no longer sells... so this shouldn't affect the Pentax version of the lenses at all.

I see no one's answered... there seems to be a need for focus adjustment. Unfortunately you can't have adjustment by lens on the K200D. Do you have a newer body? Might need to use the Sigma lens there instead...
There's a way to adjust the focus of the K200D via the Debug setting, it's not as straight forward as in newer cameras but it can be done. But it's done for all cameras - so if the camera ends up working for the 18-200, your 18-55 might be off...

I have never cooked a brisket before. But when you find one 75% off, a huge brisket that was priced at over 140 dollars only costs 38 dollars... it happens that suddenly I bought my first one :) Then I left it in the fridge for over a month, up to a couple days before the use-by date, to make it more tender and have it age slightly. (I still have to work on the whole dry aged thing, this wasn't really it)

Here I am trimming it before separating the flat from the point (it's just too big to cook at once). The meat has a bit of an aged smell to it that is just wonderful to me. The flat is cooking as we speak... will be sliced and served with yummy BBQ sauce. Bacon beans are cooking as well. It's a good day around here :)

I'm looking at another "system" as well... but not as a system in itself, it's only for a pocketable camera in the 200 dollar range...

I thought about buying an LX3/LX5 or an XZ-1 as I love those old CCD cameras.

But then my attention has been diverted to the fact that I can probably pocket a small Olympus PEN or Panasonic camera with a pancake lens on it... something like an E-PL3 will go for less than 100 dollars these days, and I could add either the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 (great little lens!) for about 120-130, or the Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 for about the same or even less. I wouldn't be looking to turn this into a system but I have to say that the Oly 45mm might end up being added some day...

Haven't made a decision yet, probably won't before Christmas... but I like the idea that I would get better IQ than with any point and shoot for about the same price as an old point and shoot, and much less than current point and shoots. Budget is key here before someone suggests that latest RX100...

So are you using one of the newer builds? I'm waiting on a new dev build to be created and I'll download that and see if that solves my crashing issues, and my intention is to use that and explore the spot removal and local edits functionality. I don't think I'll ever have to use anything else now :)

Honestly, I've been pretty happy with the noise reduction in RT. I don't have experience in many other softwares, but I can easily and quickly get better results than I did in darktable, for example.
So yeah it's probably splitting hairs :)

The development builds in the link that @bwgv001 posted have this. I'm using the newest Win64 build right now. I had it lock on me the first few times I used it but after a computer reboot it seems to work better.

ART also has this, but not the wavelets... and unfortunately it's a bit slower. And some stuff doesn't work properly. This morning I tried to edit a picture and was happy with it until I wanted to crop it and the crop simply did not work. I switched over to RT and it worked perfectly.

K200D, DA 35 Limited, f4 I'm pretty sure...

Pentax DA limited 21mm f3.2 and 40mm f2.8 or 20-40mm?

I've seen this being said here before, and I'm not disputing it, as I don't have the 20-40mm to compare... but my copy of the HD DA 21mm f/3.2 Limited is one of the sharpest lenses I own. It required fine focus adjustment in basically all my bodies but once I did that, what a world of difference... as sharp as my DA 35 Limited on the 24MP K-3 and 20MP K-S2 in medium to long focus distances (I'm not even kidding...) and the colors and color transitions are just superb.
The problem with the DA 21 is that because it's a wide angle lens, when the focus is a big off and needs adjustments, it doesn't really look out of focus, it just looks like it's not quite as sharp as other lenses. When you look at pictures on a smaller screen like a notebook computer, you don't even see that the focus is off, everything seems sharp until you pixel peep, at which point things get uglier.
I'd love to own the 20-40mm one day if it's even better than my DA 21.

Even better would be pairing the 20-40mm lens (if that ends up being the lens for the OP) with a 50mm or 70mm lens for portraits (or even the FA 77mm Limited if one can afford it...), which would give even better subject isolation and smaller apertures.

Pentax DA limited 21mm f3.2 and 40mm f2.8 or 20-40mm?

So many choices.

I find it's easier on the mind when you have a weather resistant lens (or two). In my case I ended up going for an SMC DA*16-50mm f/2.8 as I found one (converted to screw-drive AF) for about half of what it would cost me to get a 20-40mm Limited. But it is a bit big and not always practical, such as for hikes and bike rides, or when you want to wear wear on your neck all day. So I bought an HD DA 18-50mm f/4-5.6 and I'm very pleased with it. Sure it's slower, but it's WR and silent focusing if I need that, and I find it to be sharp throughout the range. HD coatings make for beautiful rich colors and contrast.

With time I ended up buying the 21, 35 and 70 Limiteds anyway, whenever a deal was presented that I couldn't refuse... and now I don't find myself wanting any other lenses, even some that I have really wanted in the past, like the 20-40. The quality of the images I get from the 16-50 (I have a good copy, superb everywhere for my uses from f/3.2)), 18-50, and the Limiteds (plus my other lenses) is really good, I think the only step up in APS-C might be the new DA*PLM 16-50mm, but even that wouldn't be a mind-blowing difference I think. Oh and my old DA 16-45mm f/4 is still capable of absolutely beautiful results as well - as long as I hold the front of the barrel up at 16mm, as the famous 16-45 "lens wobble" has gotten pretty bad and affects optics if I don't keep the lens straight... so if I ever needs a total "beater" lens, I can take that one.

To summarize: I'd get whatever the best deal is, because you'll end up getting both the zoom and primes anyway.

Compatibility of Sigma 17-70mm DC Macro with KS2

The Sigma lens was sold for various mounts. If your lens has a K mount, which is the mount that Pentax uses, then yes it is compatible. Pentax doesn't update its firmware to make older lenses from third party companies no longer work, like Canon did with the EF mount. All third party K-Mount lenses work on Pentax K-mount digital cameras.

Yeah I haven't had issues with my regular version of RT in a while. After crashing a few times I was able to get into that folder and now that the pictures are loaded, I seem to be able to edit them normally. But I only edited a few this morning, as I do have to work :)

Thank you for that! I installed the latest Windows build (14 days ago) and will be testing it. If it works well I'll ditch ART, because ART just seems to be a bit slower to process. But it could be my computer just having too much stuff open... I use it for work as well.

Edit: first impressions of this development build are not positive. it crashes just by doing basic things like opening a new folder. Or opening a file. I know I only have 8GB of memory on this computer but the old 5.8 release has been running very smoothly so I'm very surprised at how bad this new build is looking...

I have a windows computer, so I can't run builds.

I thought ART wasn't that old, but I stand corrected. The main issue I have with it at the moment is that it's slower than RT. I'll have to see if in my workflow it's faster to use RT + external editing for what RT misses compared with ART, or if using ART will be faster. Interestingly, ART is faster to save files but RT is faster to edit them. At least that's my initial finding.

I think for a beginner, ART might be better as I find that it's better laid out.

So apparently I'm not the only one annoyed at how RawTherapee was basically abandoned... one developer (agriggio) was not happy with the direction of the project so he created a "fork" based on the fact that this code is all GNU Open Source, and released ART. It's based on all the RawTherapee modules, with some added (yay! Finally local edits and spot removal) and some taken out (mostly the Wavelets that I didn't use anyway).

Things seem to be a bit more logically laid out. Will I like it? Time will tell. I do miss having a dedicated saturation slide but time will tell (maybe they have been moved and I haven't found them yet?).

The page with an option to download is agriggio / ART / wiki / Home ? Bitbucket

And of course, it is as free and open-sourced as RawTherapee.

Anyway, loving those transitions of in-focus to out of focus in the 645D pictures... and everybody is posting some great work here!

For now, just another boring rose, but what can I do, I love roses... K200D, DA 35 Limited.
