Pentax is relatively useless at releasing firmware updates which bring new features. Firmware releases for them are typically just bug fixes or to ensure compatibility with future hardware you can buy.

Point being, buy a Pentax happy with what it offers at release date, and with no expectations for change.

You can still add either an external gps or flash, if those are important to you.

It's interesting watching this unfold. Now that Pentax has quite a few models, we are seeing some of that 'save that feature for the higher end models' thing that the likes of Canon have done for years.

The K-30 included a lot of the higher end features, just in a body that didn't support a grip, or have a high burst rate and buffer or higher rated shutter and external dials. The software side of things was very similar across the range, but now we're seeing the likes of the flash commander modes not being included in the lower range models.

I keep seeing this referred to as a video upgrade, but not a lot has changed there, only video AF for a select few lenses.

Possibly you could include the Mic in and floppy screen as video features, but Pentax already had those in it's parts bin.

Still no SR in video mode, max frame rate of 60i, assume focus peaking will still turn off once recording has started, no change to clean hdmi out etc. I don't see this as a significant video upgrade at all, with Pentax passing on all the small bits that still require attention.

Will need to go back and check, but am pretty sure that wifi button is configurable on the k-70.

PDAF on sensor will only be used in live view.

The core of the K-70 is the same as the K-30, in terms of max burst fps speed, and buffer size and max 1/6000s shutter speed.

The only way up from these core specs is into the K-5/K-3 pro lines.

Surely someone somewhere can check if the menu says anything about SR.

I've seen nothing listed with the dreaded Movie SR mentioned so there is a glimmer of hope still.

Shame about AF only if you buy a new lens. If that is the case, and there is no real SR, then you might as well buy an A6000 or OMD EM10 mkii, as you are then talking a whole new camera and lens anyway.

Has real SR returned after going missing for all these years?
