Iím not too interested in buying this class of camera, but Iím always interested in seeing Pentax pursue new technologies and broadening the product base.

Many thanks, Matt, for your site and all the work you've put into it over the past few years. It helped fill in several information and procedure gaps when working between the flash section of my K10D manual and the manual for my new Metz 58AF2. Definitely flattens the learning curve!

Gotta wonder sometimes about product developers and their hit-or-miss approach to product upgrades.

And manuals! Right now, I'm trying to find out how to set my new 58 AF2 and my K10 to the same wireless channel. Put the two manuals together, and the procedure is nowhere clearly specified. If I can't find it on the forum or mattdm's site, I'll have to work it out by trial and error. I'm hoping it's as simple as putting the flash on the hot shoe and making the channel setting on the flash.

Let's hope it's not dead, but merely needs a reset. Suggest you try returning the unit to the factory default settings (it's in the menus somewhere) and see if that helps.

I've only played with mine the night I unpacked it, but am taking it along on a trip to Mt. Rainier this weekend to get some experience with it. If my experience is like yours, I'll be sure to post that! Again, let's hope not.

What's your fav light modifier for portable flashes?

X2 on the Stofen Omni-Bounce as my favorite speedlight modifier. Quick, easy, small and produces a usefully smooth diffusion of light. I had one for my old Nikon SB-50 and bought one along with my new Metz 58 AF2 for use on and off my K10.

Poll: Film and/or Digital..?

So glad I kept my Spottie and its screwmounts, as they're so comfortably familiar and they keep my skills up. However, since I can't justify a slide scanner of my own, and the scan results from the labs around here are either hit-or-miss or hella expensive (or both), I don't shoot slide film much any more. I like modern fine-grain color negative film OK, and still have the occasional decent shot printed large at Prolab in Ballard.

But I mainly shoot digital, because I like working in Photoshop and can get the whole process under my control that way.

Three good reasons here for using the 2 second delay setting when shooting on a tripod. It's my favorite shutter mode for landscape/scenics.

K20D body only or kit?

You could get the new kit lens and share it between you and hubby. The old kit lens could become the backup wide-angle lens for you, and the main lens for the K10D unless you don't plan to shoot the new one on any given outing. Then hubby could shoot the newer one.

Wim, those aren't white stripes in the Leica's hood, they're slots (three in all). Look carefully at the lower right slot, and you can see the base of the camera body through it.

Photo paper

Canyontraveler, welcome to the Forums!

I've used Epson printers and inksets exclusively for about ten years now. While I find I get reliably good results (equal or better than my former pro printing lab, to my eyes) with Epson's papers, I can't always get the sizes I want in the finishes I want, so I've shopped around. I've learned to avoid HP and Kodak inkjet papers. I've learned to appreciate Ilford and Inkpress papers. The former, I could never get to print accurate colors, even after custom profiling using a DataColor Printfix Pro calibrator. Ilford Gallerie smooth gloss and pearl papers match Epson paper profiles with no problems, and the Inkpress papers I've tried (I really like the Fiber Gloss) are easy to profile accurately.

That's my experience, FWIW. Good luck to you as you try out your own options!

Do you do noise reduction?

Good one, Albert!

Personally, I turn on in-camera NR only for ISO 1600, which I almost never use. I think I've only cleaned up a couple of noisy images in Photoshop in the past four years. I don't really photograph much on "the dark side," I suppose.

How is Pentax doing where you are?

Our two biggest photo specialist stores, Glazer's and Kenmore Cameras, each stock a few current digital Pentax bodies. Glazer's also has Pentax flashes and a few Optio models. Kenmore carries many Optio models and more Pentax glass, including a great selection of used K-mount (and even a few screwmount) lenses, both Pentax and third party. I give the nod to Kenmore Camera if you want to actually hold Pentax gear in your hand. :D

You can check out both stores online as well: Kenmore Camera and Welcome To Glazer's Camera | Glazer's Camera

Do you grow?

Good question, Syb. As for me, well, yes I do/have. I shot a variety of stuff for personal learning in the late '60s, then shot for my university's annual and so began to acquire assignment discipline. In the mid-'70s came three years professional work documenting aerospace engineering tests in a wind tunnel, and my introduction to the wonderful tool that was/is the Pentax Spotmatic.

A long stint followed where I shot landscapes for personal satisfaction (perhaps as a reaction to the technical photography as well?) and taught photography/B&W darkroom technique to high school and college students.

I bought a N***n digital system in 2004 and began getting a little more adventurous. I still shot more landscapes than anything else, but began shooting urban street scenes, portraits, architectural details, and occasional wildlife shots. I'd been using Photoshop for academic and publishing tasks ever since version 1.0 came along in the mid-1990s, and I got a real chance to develop my photography pp skills once I had lots of digital image files to work with.

Since ditching the N***n for a K10D in late 2007, I've shot a much more balanced mix of the above subjects––more portraits and urban stuff than ever before, and less landscape. I need longer glass for wildlife, but have had some opportunities to shoot in game parks where my DA* 50-135 is adequate for the closer proximity, and I get the chance to practice anticipating animal behavior.

So, I think my photography is growing, especially as I work to develop the eye for new subject matter and try out a variety of techniques for interesting captures. I've even tried out some of my new thoughts about what and how to shoot with my trusty Spottie kit!

For Ned re: Pentax Persona.

Ned,

Benjikan IS "interesting." His published work is "interesting." PENTAX Imaging USA needs "interesting" marketing now more than ever, but has precious little to show those who are interested in buying cameras, lenses and accessories that PENTAX is not only still around, but is viable. Benjikan has something to show you, and has the professional credibility to suggest that his ideas might be "interesting."

From reading your blog over the past couple of years, I think you might be a shrewd CEO, so why not show some interest in Benjamin Kanarek's offer?:)
