Same thing happens in the USA. Company X has product launch and it's always far away (I live in Miami, FL and the one thing that happened here, a Sony product launch, did not include any locals other than Brian Smith)

For the record, I wasn't trying to scam anyone. I just didn't know about the PENTAX requirement. Just because you're a PENTAX site doesn't mean you are limited to PENTAX cameras by default. If it was posted in the rules, then I missed it. However, the email blast that took me to the contest made no mention of it.

This is what happens if you let the Photography Class take it's own yearbook picture...

This shot is 7 images composited together. This was the iPad wallpaper version. The final version for the yearbook had 17 images composited together to look like a cover from an old Weird Tales magazine. Final image is 65 layers in Photoshop. FYI: the mad scientist (me) and his minions are all wearing the same coat (we only had one).

Even more amazing is that the cat sat still that long with a camera pointed at it.

Very nice, but would scandalize my wife and daughter. My son, however, wouldn't mind.

I was there at PDN and the drool you saw on the 645D was mine. I was there at the start and had a nice chat with Ned Bunnell. Hopefully Pentax can get their production levels ramped up without compromising quality.

I think the value proposition of the 645D is going to be along the lines of "top-notch MFD images with DLSR features". If the DXO tests are an indicator (only side-by-side tests are really valid here, that's why I'm organizing one) the 645D is going to a lot of "bang for the buck:.

I was presenting a simplified explanation. We can drag this on for pages and pages of mind-numbing physics equations, but I fear for the sanity of rest of the gang.

Color depth is not directly controlled by the sensor per se, but by the Analog-to-Digital (A/D) converters attached to it. A camera sensor is, for intents and purposes, an array of photovoltaic cells that can only measure the luminosity at a give site. These photovoltaic cells directly translate brightness to electric current. The brighter the light, the more current is produced. A/D converters translate this current into a numerical value. The sensitivity to changes in voltage and the number of bits of output determines the number of levels of sensitivity for that particular pixel. On top of each pixel is a colored filter laid out in the Bayer Pattern (RGGB) and from there red, green, and blue values are derived and interpolated for each pixel. The only exceptions to this last bit are multishot systems from Hassy and Foveon sensors from Sigma. No color interpolation there.

In low light conditions the photocells produce weak current and the A/D converter have problems determining a reading. One then "cranks up the volume" by increasing the sensitivity of the A/D converters, but you increase the bad with the good and that translates into noise. The best A/D converters have high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) which allows for cleaner high ISO shots. Phase One achieves this via pixel binning in hardware where the signal from four pixels is combined to increase the SNR and thus, high ISO performance.

The day they release the P80+ with Sensor+ you will see it crank out 20 Mpx high ISO in Sensor+ mode. Scary.

Wasn't picking on you Digitalis, was making sure everyone was clear on the whole 14 bit vs 16 bit color issue. Final verdict: more crayons in the box.

Also, an earlier comment someone else made about Phase One Sensor+: no, it is not a file reduction technique. Sensor+ uses technology similar to the Very Large Array radio telescope to increase SNR by combining the signal from 4 pixels into one pixel (thus quartering the output file). You can read my report on it here.

Phase uses both Dalsa and Kodak sensors in their digital backs. The experience with that has been what I said: Dalsa has better high ISO and Kodak longer exposure times. I have not put the 645D through it's paces. Hopefully the combination of Kodak sensor and Pentax processing engine will give better results than other Kodak based units.

For the record on 14-bit vs 16-bit color:
The number of possible colors is calculated as 2 raised to the power of the bits of color, which yields the number of colors per channel (RGB). This result is cubed to express all possible combinations of R, G, & B.

14-bit color = (2^14)^3 colors = (16,384)^3 = 4,398,046,511,104 colors
16-bit color = (2^16)^3 colors = (65,536)^3 = 281,474,976,710,656 colors

Long exposures are part of my test agenda for the 645D when I get my review unit in. (I am using positive thinking at this point). You are right about the heat issue but that also depends on who makes the sensor. Dalsa sensors have shorter long exposure times than Kodak sensors (which can go up to 30 min), the Dalsa's high ISO performance is better.

I agree. Also, the higher framerate of the P40+ is in Sensor+ mode which is 10 Mpx.

The 645D does very well indeed!

Scott & the Gang:

I am in the process of organizing a head-to-head shoot out between Pentax and the other major players in an "apples to apples" photo shoot to compare the quality of the images produced by 40 Mpx systems. Need to travel to PhotoPlus this week to pitch this to Pentax and the rest. Will keep you posted.

Actually, the S2 (& M9) ship with Lightroom 3. The love affair between Leica & Phase One went south before the S2 launch.

For the record, I have gathered numerous Pentax 645D RAW files to experiment with in my workflow. I am happy to report that the 645D fits nicely into the way I do things with little changes. Hassy, Phase & Leaf files all cause me gas because I have to utilize a specialized software tool in order to get the most out of their files. I'm not saying that Phocus or Capture One are bad, its just that my workflow centers around Lightroom and Aperture (depending on the type of job) with their associated plugins and tools.

Which leads me to another reason I am keenly interested in the 645D: I can use a lot of the peripherals I already have for my Nikon D700 and Leica M8. Radio triggers, Eye-fi cards, my el-cheapo studio strobes, etc, do not have to be be replaced with kit that costs thousands of dollars more.

I personally know David and he is very sharp. DALE PHOTO & DIGITAL is one of our local Leica dealers and David has been invited by Leica numerous times to their HQ. That said, he is firmly enraptured by the Leica S2 and has a thorough knowledge of the product. Any MF comparisons he makes uses the Leica S2 as the yardstick to measure by. His 645D comments are based on his handling of a demo unit at the Pentax booth at Photokina, not a rigorous test in the field. He commented on the prints because his family business also provides print services and the stuff he saw was not up to his standards (which are high). I treat this article as a "first impressions" type of reportage more than anything else.

Exactly. The Reality Show format would be great because it would document two ordinary Joe Photographers (Carlos & Steve) who are not already proficient in medium format anything and see how they fare with the 645D.

Brilliant!
