"Auto" noise reduction is set as a default setting on the K-30, so I expect there is some automatic adjustments going on, which I think it great and I am really impressed with my K-30 so far! I too would like to see a comparison between "normal" (whatever that is!0 and low lighting in a series of shots.

LCD protector?

I just measured both my K-r and my K-30 rear LCD screens. K-r: 2.038" x 2.638" (51.77mm x 66.97mm) K-30: 2.101" x 2.639" (53.37mm x 66.97mm). So, while they are very close, they are not 100% the same. This measurement was made with a digital caliper, to the edge of the glass LCD screen.

How many K-30 owners do we have?

It seems funny that the title of this is "How many K-30 owners do we have?" and over half are comments about the K-5, price drops before buying, etc. and not to the point ("How many K-30 owners do we have?"). Seems like so many of these threads start on a topic, then gravitate all over the place and quickly get off topic. Just an editorial comment. I have ordered mine with the 18-135MM lens and it is on it's way from back east, so I own one but haven't used it yet.

Kr firmware update question

Sometime the firmware is made available to fix issues, and sometimes to add features such as GPS tagging. I am a believer that newer is (generally) better, but also don't hop on the site the instant it is available. I wait a bit to make sure that if there are issues, they are sorted out before I decide to do the update. These are not like the days gone by for computer BIOS where the changes could render the BIOS useless unless reflashed. I have upgraded several times (my K-r and previous K200d) and found no issues with it.

Sending my K-r in for FF (Not Tungsten Issue)

On October 1st, I sent my K-r and kit lens both in for a similar issue, along with the e-dial not operating consistently, and the built-in flash not operating consistently as well. My focus issue was with the kit lens as well as a 50mm prime lens and an 18mm prime, so could have just sent the body, but decided to include the lens just to be safe. It was put on Parts Backorder on the 19th so I don't have an ETA on the repair, but I assume they much have found something since it wasn't quickly repaired then sent back. No mention was made on the repair site when I might expect it. It was a warranty repair.

I have an AF-360 and like the results. If I had had enough extra money, I would have gotten the AF-540, not necessarily for the swivel, but more for the slight power advantage. But, I don't remember there being a large difference between the two, and like the features and the predictability of the AF-360, so would recommend it if you're budget-conscious.

If the camera were in an air conditioned environment, then brought outside into a warm, fairly humid environment, the moisture in the air would condense on the cold, dry glass surfaces. So, that is a normal situation.

Have you used the HDR in your K-r?

I have used it for outdoor shots, such as Mount Rainier in Washington State. On the Auto mode, it tends to increase the contract just enough to make the shot look better than with the standard exposure. I like the look it gives. Have used the other strengths of HDR, but haven't found a subject that lends itself to the stronger renditions. I like the look of the Auto setting for many subjects.

K-r new firmware ver 1.11

I updated to 1.11 about 7 days ago and I haven't seen any improvement relating to the front focus (FF) under tungsten light in my case. I didn't see the FF issue listed in the "fix" list, but thought I'd give it a try.

The link as listed does get you to the list of UK firmware, but it is the link to the firmware itself that does not work. Tried Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8 and neither worked.

I agree with ions about the manual exposure. The automatic exposure could easily account for the change between each frame, thus causing it to appear to flicker.

I'd first copy any images off the card then use the camera to format it and try again. Storing images in the card isn't a good idea, for many reasons, such as what you found about it being full, but also having them copied off to an external source may be more secure.

The focusing issue may have been the lack of light and/or contrast to get a good focus, since you said you were across a banquet hall using a 55-300 lens. The "focus aid" light has a finite range so across a room it would not help you with the focus anyway.

I have not used the continuous shooting feature, but could be the "full" card from the first point, and/or possibly the card can't quite keep up (transfer speed-wise) with the 6 fps that the camera can shoot. Possible try it after the reformat, and check the label for the model number of the card and investigate the transfer speed of the card.

kr ff issue

They have acknowledged the issue (in their original reply, then 2 days later sent me a follow-up e-mail), and although they don't have a date from PENTAX Japan when the issue will be resolved, they do say it is being worked on. So, I don't think PENTAX is being dishonest - PENTAX USA just does not have a firm date when a firmware version will be released.

If you feel they are being dishonest, I'd suggest you take your receipt, copy it, and return the camera to the retailer for a refund.

I just (2011-06-13) checked with and received this from PENTAX:

You may send your K-r and kit lens to our Chandler, Arizona repair faciltiy have the camera cleaned and checked for an autofocus problem. Please be aware that if your camera's autofocus problem is occuring under low tungsten light shooting conditions, this is a known issue to Pentax Japan. PENTAX in Japan has advised that to reduce the occurrence of front focusing when shooting in Tungsten light, to set the White Balance to Tungsten (instead of using Auto White Balance).
We have no additional information or timeline regarding a possible fix.

How could you possibly be so certain that "no" fix is coming? More negativity from the sound of it. Always easier to point fingers when you don't know what is involved in the process. I agree with piledon... send 'em back and buy something else that is perfect.

Honestly, do we have to say things like "Honestly, use some common sense." to new DSLR people, or even old DSLR people? If they knew all the answers they wouldn't be here - they'd have made their purchase and be out shooting pictures. Why not just leave the sarcasm for close friends , or just drop it entirely>

K-R remote advice please

eBay offers many "universal" type remotes, which can be used for a variety of cameras. Most have "sets" or buttons, such as two for Pentax, another pair for Canon, etc. Yes, the F-r has the front-facing receiver, and while I don't know the exact angle that the remote would be useful, mine has a fairly wide range for angle and quite a reasonable distance range as well. You should be able to find these universal remotes on eBay for just a few dollars.

I just don't see how comments like there are helpful or informative K-r owners:

"That's OK. You can now expect your e-Dial will stop responding in 3 days. Or 2 days before the battery starts showing Red after 5 shutter clicks..."

Yes, there are some of the thousands of units (tens of thousands, or perhaps hundreds of thousands sold) out there that have certain issues, but anyone that does any kind of research here or elsewhere will find those hashed over. Not every camera can be expected to have all of the same issues.

My initial K-r had an unresponsive e-dial, but it was replaced gladly and quickly by Amazon and the current unit doesn't have the same issue. So, I'd like to suggest that we provide helpful information when asked, but not give opinions of false warnings to other K-r owners unsolicited.

Check that you have the shutter speed set high enough to avoid camera shake, and/or make sure the setting for Shake Reduction is set on to help reduce shake. But, a high-enough shutter speed may be the ticket (but as others have said, it is hard to know without samples).

I also bought the LensAlign unit, and I have used it for the kit lens so far (have others to try, as well as various white balance settings other than the AWB I used, and it made it fairly easy to determine what adjustment was needed. While I wasn't too sure I wanted to spend the money, I did want to verify and adjust the setting it it was needed, so decided I wanted an accurate way to tell rather than just guessing or relying on what I THOUGHT was the proper correction.
