Yes, though our vision does something quite similar, when viewing shadows, to the correction we apply to the digital capture during processing.

Yep...the EXIF spills the beans. Pentax dSLRs do not write the SceneType tag for RAW files, but is present for JPEG with the value "1" which translates to "Directly photographed".

That sounds very good, but may prove frustrating.

Images are never saved as RAW in that RAW capture data is fundamentally non-viewable without being converted to pixel data in memory with possibility of being written to file (e.g. JPEG). With RAW+, the only image created is the one rendered to JPEG and that having being made according to the best efforts of the team that wrote the code used for both in-camera and with PDCU RAW processing.

If using PDCU for RAW processing, the first pass results will be virtually identical to the in-camera JPEG* when doing RAW+ minus information lost in moving from 14 to 8 bits. Try a different RAW converter and the first pass results will provide contrast between RAW converters and little more. (FWIW, I tried this just prior to posting.)

Steve

* First configure PDCU to process the RAW for the "Browse" view rather than using the embedded JPEG from the DNG/PEF file. This allows for easy comparison.

How to cheat ibis about focal lenght?
Posted By stevebrot

The short answer is that there is no way to fully overcome the behavior of your TC. This is not an anomaly. It is expected behavior for both camera and TC. You can be sure that Sigma was aware that the contacts were straight pass-through and that lens metadata (maximum aperture, aperture range, and whatever focal length information passed through the data contact) would not be accurate. To the best of my knowledge there has only been one TC made in Pentax-K that will do the proper translation of focal length and aperture and that is the Pentax-DA 1.4x AW AF Rear Converter.

Don't forget that it must also accept (with suitable adapter) both 35mm and 120 film; that being perfectly doable, of course, with a simple firmware fix.

There is no way to spoof focal length to IBIS while retaining auto-focus. Masking the data contact to allow manual focal length entry results in the lens not being detected as AF.

I cheated as to which is which and prefer #2 in regards to general appearance but will note that it was attained at the cost of a fair amount of artifact in the branches of the weeping willow (visible when viewing the uploaded original on Flickr). #1 is much cleaner overall.

Edit:
I changed my mind after looking at both with other than my laptop screen. #1 is now preferred.

...and risk getting same on the underside of the pentaprism? :(

Errant foam crumbs can be a problem when cleaning out the mirror bumper on any camera. Areas at risk include the focus screen, mirror surface, and blades of vertical run shutters. The risk can be minimized by using care when picking off initial crumbly fragments (use tweezers/forceps) such that any remnants fall out of, rather than in to, the mirror box and doing similar when switching to wet clean-out using lighter fluid (think pick, flood, blot, pick, scrape, blot).

A mild buffing with emery or extra-fine sand paper in the area matching the "data" contact has worked for me in the past. It is easy to see when one has taken enough of the anodizing off. I would not suggest shorting the "A" contact.

Aperture is messed up. Anyone use Affinity Photo?

I use the Windows version as a Photoshop replacement for raster editing, but do not use it for RAW conversion...too clunky and slow. My purchase decision was driven by colorspace support and full high bit-depth workflow, rare attributes at its price point for products with high compatibility to PS conventions. My main criticism has been the rather opaque work flow and poor documentation for same.

I can't compare to Aperture, however and suggest spending some time with the demo version.

Question about KEH warranty... am I going crazy?

I would expect them to honor a return request (item not as described) for condition issues, but manufacturing defect on a used lens is another matter. If they are willing and able to correct the problem under warranty, that would be super cool and worth considering IMHO.

I don't have access to pixel shift, but I would expect much would depend on whether the optical path, film flatness, and focus control allow full benefit from PxS.

Takumarology - Takumar Field Guide

The answer may be at the link above, but perhaps not. The listings and information is exhaustive, but not consistently accurate. My take has been that variants from form in Pentax-land are not unexpected, particularly when transitioning to new design types.

M vs A 50/1.7

Is the aperture ring locked onto the "A" position? The "A" contact on the 50/1.7 is of the type that actually retracts into the mount when not set and locked on "A".
