Irix Dragonfly 150mm Macro

FWIW, you don't need to send your pictures to them, just post them on your own social media account and tag them appropriately. The contest announcement page is devoid of small print, AFAICT. I don't think publishing something on your own social media gives anyone else rights to (legally) use the images commercially in any way. If you win and Irix wants to use your images - either the ones you posted to win or the ones you'll take with the loaner - they'll have to negotiate something with you separately from the contest. Again, that's AFAICT.

Well, for myself, I didn't mean to sound quite so harsh. :o

After all, I guess early access to loaner equipment is how a lot of Youtubers get their views... For them, it's even better that you don't get to keep the equipment, because it makes them seem more neutral as reviewers.

Yes, this is more in line with what I was thinking. As a competition, the prize is entirely underwhelming for me. If this was a super groundbreaking lens, and/or ultra expensive, then maybe one month of access to it would be more enticing. Or if at least the winners became "Irix Photogs", where that is some sort of sponsorship program that gives you regular access to loaners as well as rebates on equipment purchases, that would also make it more enticing for me.

Dunno... Maybe I'm getting too cynical, but it sounds to me like they're looking for five good macro photogs to give them a lot of social media exposure in exchange for access to a loaner lens for one month. Not even a measly rebate if you want to keep the thing after a month? Doesn't seem too enticing but maybe I am missing something?

EDIT: Actually, they're looking for everyone that applies to give them social media exposure in exchange for possibly nothing at all, as most won't even get a loaner at all...

An amazing collection, no doubt. I hope the money raised by the auction serves to take care of the owner, and I also hope he/she is doing OK...

BTW, some of the items look like they might have been stored in suboptimal conditions (e.g. this A* 200mm). I might be tempted to bid on a few items, but if you look at the conditions de vente, the shipping of items looks complicated...

Here's an article from Creative Commons on how CC will be working with SmugMug to try to see how/if they can avoid millions of CC-licensed photos being removed from the "Commons" as SmugMug starts deleting photos from accounts...

If you want to use your own domain but without hosting, it might be worth looking at SmugMug's "Power"-level plan. $6/month, billed annually, and they claim you can use your own domain with it.

BTW, at $50 per year, Flickr Pro is starting to look a little similar SmugMug's own "Basic" level of service ($4/month), only with a different branding and look&feel on it...

Yeah, but that's not what I want. With what you suggest, I need to store the original image on a separate flickr page from the edited, publicly viewable version. This means a headache when I upload images, making sure they are uploaded in the right order (with the original " next" to the edited file), and I need to be very careful about setting permissions appropriately on each image. The possibility of error is ever present, and it's just generally cumbersome. It's a kludge. (Does Flickr even accept RAWs, BTW?)

What I want is simply the ability to "attach" a second file which would always remain private to every upload. This second file would then be downloadable by me through an icon on the page of the publicly viewable image. That way, the original and the edited images are stored in the same virtual place and there can't be any confusion/errors.

I currently use Flickr as a sharing site only. I downsize my edited jpgs and that and only that is what gets uploaded to the site. My full-size originals remain on my hard drives. If I had this feature, I would also use Flickr as secure storage for the original files of my keepers. This would make it much more useful (and thus valuable) to me.

I hope they clear that up, and I wish that it were possible to "freeze" the account of a deceased, so that upon payment of a lump sum by the estate - maybe the equivalent of a few years of normal service? - the account would remain accessible in read-only format (ie without the possibility of uploading new content) and with someone from the estate being forwarded messages sent to the account.

Same here. I would definitely upgrade to Pro if I had the possibility to "attach" a file that would be downloadable only by me to each uploaded jpg. I would call this feature "Private Original". That way I could virtually store the original unedited file in the same place as the publicly accessible edited one and all of a sudden, it would become a lot more attractive to have a Pro account...

I wonder how they will handle people's deaths? Does my estate have to pay in perpetuity to keep my photos online? There are probably already many old accounts whose holders have passed and which will be more or less destroyed when they start actively deleting photos...

Frankly, now that I think about it, I can understand freezing free accounts that are over 1k photos from uploading new content. But to announce that they will actively delete photos from accounts, well, that's a little over the line...

At $35 per year, it might make sense to/for me. But that's only for the first year. At $50, they had better offer me something much better. Now I also have to consider alternatives like 500px or even Smug Mug's own service offerings...

Heheh. :o

I think they figure people on free accounts with near or more than 1k photos are people who are actively engaged in the community and are the most likely to accept being pushed into paying. They may even be right but that doesn't make it any more fun. In fact, the moderators edited out a profane expression of displeasure from my previous post...

Well, it looks like the insect season is pretty much over, now that the nights are freezing. Didn't even take the K-3 out since returning from bike touring in Scotland. So here's a leftover shot from earlier this summer. I posted another shot of this individual previously here, but I thought this one was pretty good too... :o BTW, thanks to some help over on Flickr, it has now been identified as (very likely) a female Snipe Fly of the Chrysopilus quadratus species.

Sorry to hear that! I guess the whole "rails to trails" movement might be of interest for you - with many countries now developing fairly extensive networks of bike paths along disused railways and canal towpaths. In Scotland, it's kind of embedded in the National Cycle Network, so you need dig a little, because the dedicated bike path sections of the NCN vary wildly - from the converted railway (wide & flat) to quasi-singletrack (narrow & bumpy)... But for example in Spain there are the Vias Verdes, and in France, les Voies vertes...

In other news, this trip (as well as the training and other rides of the summer) has given me a serious case of GAS. I want a new bike! Mind you, my touring rig has performed admirably, but it's tire clearance is limited (I'm maxed out at 38C), I am annoyed by its toe overlap, and it's a heavy beast. Some of my lesser used lenses have been sporting a worried expression lately... ;-)

Thank you both!

FWIW, we cycled from Glasgow, and after a cycle around Arran, we headed North, mostly on NCN78, to Inverness, and then we returned to Glasgow, mostly via NCN7 (with a detour to Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon). Very impressed with Sustrans' work in developing the National Cycle Network. The routes are well-signed, and almost exclusively on either dedicated cycle paths or very quiet backroads. The rolling surfaces are usually very good. The diversity of terrain is amazing. The maps made by Sustrans are also very helpful and made planning much easier.

I assume this thread accepts non-Pentax shots? Me and my wife recently spent 3.5 weeks bicycle touring Scotland (and I didn't bring the K-3)...

Thanks for the info! That's a lot of breathing - though I guess it just might be par for the course for internal focus macros...? The lens has 50% more FL than the D-FA 100mm, but that difference shrinks to just 15% more at MFD. The breathing will limit the usefulness of this lens with a diopter. (I.E. at MFD, adding a diopter won't give that much more magnification than what you get with the same diopter on the D-FA 100mm, since the effectiveness of a diopter relates directly to focal length...)

BTW, the greater working distance of longer macros isn't always an advantage. Given the same flash setup, you will get softer light and will be able to work at lower flash power with a shorter working distance, since the diffusion surface will be closer to the subject. I've used a Tamron Adaptall 90mm F/2.5 with the excellent adaptall 2X tele-converter as a poor man's 180mm 1:1, and though I got excellent results when adding a Raynox DCR-250 - this combo produced what is still one of my all-time favorite shots - I found the working distance a little too long for my flash setup when working without the Raynox. So you need to balance not scaring off the critter with getting good and abundant light. Just something to be aware of...

Well, I beg to differ...

This lens was pre-announced previously, but what remains is pricing and availability (and some important details like does it have A contacts), which should be forthcoming now. Not sure who gets my money yet - Irix with their 150mm 1:1 or Laowa with this lens. The 100mm WR plus 1.4x converter is already pretty damn good, but both of these new lenses seem interesting. Kinda hoping for some movement on K-3 successor before buying more k-mount stuff though...
