What size screw for K-5 Tripod?

You're probably confused with the tripod's base screw which is probably 3/8". this is the screw that the tripod head is mounted to - like a ball head. A 1/4" screw is used to mount the camera to a mounting plate, which then is mounted to the head. So like @BigMackCam said, 1/4" is virtually standard for all cameras - not just SLRs.

If you are looking at a tripod that doesn't have this configuration - tripod, head, and mounting plate - then don't buy it. Its probably not very good.

PS: Congratulation on getting a K-5! Its a great camera. I'm even using it for Astrophotography and it excels at it.

I take back what I said. I bad mouthed K5 for video a little while back but I recently made a little video of opportune clips and the K5 stuff looked pretty good. Here it is - the nature stuff at the beginning is K5ii:

Me too, sort of. I own a non-subscription version (5.7.1) of Lightroom, but if I didn't, I wouldn't get a subscription license.

I use the included "Photos". I think its the best for organizing and has some advanced editing tools if you turn them on. If I really want to edit a photo for something special like a portrait or scene, then I use Lightroom. I think it depends on how serious you are about post-production. If yes, then probably just go straight to Lightroom. I find Bridge rather useless. I think its really intended to "bridge" a gap in photoshop workflow.

I forgot about Simon's. I was thinking of Camtec, Photo Service and Lauzon. Any others? They all carry Pentax fortunately but getting accessories is sketchy.

Yes it sounds bad but lets face it, brick and mortar stores are disappearing - another massive chain just went bankrupt (Sears Canada) - there are only 3 camera stores here in Montreal, a city of 3 M people - electronic stores are thinning their stock. I think Best Buy, another big chain is moving to online sales. Maybe Ricoh/Pentax is just working with that reality. Anything that can fit in a mailbox or be safe dropped or picked up at the local PO is online fodder so who needs regular stores? I've bought more than $1000 of telescope accessories this year, all online sales. Its just way easier and convenient, and probably a little more impulsive!

Look forward to seeing your astrophotography work in the astrophotography group. Unfortunately Pentax is not well supported in general and even less in AP. But recently I found a solution to do interval shooting with StellarMate - Linux based. However, maybe the new Pentaxes have tethering support now. I know the K-1 does but not sure about interval shooting.

I belong to the Astrophotography group. Why can't I just attach a photo? Why can't I just like a post without actually commenting? Why are there different rules than the rest of the forum?

First lens for a beginner

I totally understand the desire for a faster lens. I think the real benefit is the brightness factor when looking through the lens and framing your shot, and of course Boke.

I have a 50mm and 35mm prime. I got the 50 because people said get the standard 50 for starters. The only reason the 50 is a good choice is that it approximates the perspective of the human eye. The problem is that with an APS-C camera, its a bit like looking through a tube. I never feel like I can get a good field of view with it.

So I bought a 35mm F2 and I like it much more and use it when I go out with a prime. Otherwise I generally use my DA17-70, which is a very good lens but only F4.

(For a full-frame camera like the K-1, I would say get a 50mm.)

Nice K5 video..whats the gear?

So this is a good side by side comparison with a k-01 (I think) post #20 and #21 (K5) . I k-01 video has a "clarity" that the k5 doesn't.

Pentax Cinematography. - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com

Maybe its all in the post processing, I don't know. But I've just never been pleased with the k5 output. So I use an iPhone 6 or GoPro so obviously I'm an amateur but recently I bought an LX100 and it's the only thing that beats the iPhone 6, although its not as stable an image. My son who is a producer/director now used my LX100 in his last job because it was small and fit the steady-cam and produces good video.

Actually I'm glad you posted this because it demonstrates whats WRONG with the K5 video. I don't find it sharp at all. In fact is seems gritty and never quite in focus. Also, the frame slowly rocks back and forth which I think is the SR and not the steady cam, because it'll do that even if you try holding still. At least it didn't jump which I think it will do if you pan a little faster and it also heaves when you stop panning. It only 1 step above old consumer SD video. Sorry to rain on your parade.

I'd like to know what you think of Pentax's shake reduction when it comes to video. My feeling is that it introduces jumps in the video, and sound noise. I've almost never used my K5II for video because of this and the general rough looking image. Like to know what you think.

I used to shoot Tri-X - develop and print too. The latest version apparently has finer grain. Looks like so in your image. Nice because I used to find it a bit grainy. But the combination of clear day, Tri-X film and yellow filter - and even subject of trees against sky - all say "high contrast". I think you got pretty much what you might expect. Looks good.

What do you do with your lens boxes?

Definitely keep them until you sell the lens. It may be years before you sell a lens but eventually your shooting interests may change and some lenses just collect dust. Its good to recover that stored cash and having the original box helps.

Keep in mind that the mirrorless camera's have you looking into an electronic viewfinder or on an LCD. You need to be comfortable with that. I have one for travelling but there's nothing quite like looking through the lens of an SLR when framing your shots! PS: Still have my K-5II and still love it :)

I know that with the o-gps1 module, you cannot successfully calibrate astrotracer indoors. You need to be outside in the open. There are a few levels of GPS operation and astrotracer needs calibrated 3D. Its probably the same with the builtin versions. Also, you have to complete the calibration sequence within one minute.
