Dpreview.com tests pixelshift IRL

Wow! I am impressed! I chose K3 over K3-II thinking that pixel shift will not be useful other than for completely static objects such as product photography. This test shows that it is usable even for a water fall, trees and leaves at 1/4 seconds!
I still don't think pixel shift is meant for such scenes.

I don't think the buyer can claim warranty, if ever needed. Just a thought!

Thanks The Squirrel Mafia! I will try these soon.

One question: when we apply a new profile to an image, that replaces all the earlier raw processing on that image, correct? Is there a way to apply profiles one after the other (with different set of parameters in each profile) keeping the previously applied parameters unchanged?

That is a good idea! Having command line options to get things done in a script!
Are you a dev, of RT by any chance? :-)

That will apply the same profile to all the images.

I was trying to apply an appropriate amount of noise reduction to each image, depending on the ISO used, all at once without needing to know ISO setting of each of the picture. So basically I should be able to say:

if ISO of the image is less than 400 do not apply NR,
for ISO of the image between 400 and 800, use profile-1 with some amount of NR,
for ISO of the image between 800 and 1600 use a profile with slightly more NR and so on.

but all in one batch....

Thanks The Squirrel Mafia!
Is it possible to do batch processing with RT? I mean if I have 500 images is it possible to apply an appropriate profile automatically, lets say depending on ISO of each image?

K-01 zoom while manual focus

Recently I have acquired a used K-01. Overall form factor is better than I expected (after reading the negative comments!). Lack of view finder is somewhat limiting, but it is annoying that even with focus peaking, Live View manual focusing is not as easy as K5's live view.

Is it possible to magnify the view during focusing and go back to no-zoom view after it is focused?

Thanks!

Is the K1 really for the average amateur photographer?

"average" keeps changing as the standard raises. It may be hard (or impossible) to find a digital camera that only produces average picture quality of 1950s.

In modern SDM lenses, focus motor is within, and it is pretty smooth while focusing too. So Pentax focusing speed should be comparable to other brands while using SDM lenses. Am I correct in that assumption?

Thanks Adam!
BTW, do you know what aperture was used for the competition between K3 and D650 (in K3 review), was that wide open?

Many users report Auto Focusing to be better on other brands compared to Pentax. Does that mean the focus point is more accurate or just that focusing is quicker?

Can SDM lenses on a Pentax K3 perform as fast as SDM on other brands for wide apertures? The PF's own moving target test with K3 did not mention what aperture they used to get 97% keeper rate with D610 vs 67% with K3.

Why you will buy the K-1?

I would buy one just because it is full frame. As a hobbyist, I may have to sell my K3 and some of my lenses to partially fund this!

* Full frame gives more coverage for normal lenses. I prefer perspective view of normal focal lengths and similar.
* Built in wireless connectivity, so I don't have to take the SD card out all the time (especially when you AF tune your lens and such)
* LCD screen design is awesome!
* 36MP gives a lot of room for cropping at a lower pixel density similar to K5
* Viewfinder appears to be as good as that in the old film cameras, to help my eyes

The only thing it has to catch up is the focusing speed, accuracy and tracking. I am very eager to read user reviews to get a feel of it!

Which camera to sell (K5-IIs or K3)?

I am also thinking of keeping K5 IIs partly because it is cheaper of the two! K5-IIs was bought from another forum member.
K3 was bought brand new with non-transferable extended warranty! May be I should keep both and wait for a few months before replacing one!

Aaha! I see. I was always concerned about the potential for image blur caused by mirror flop vibration on a floating sensor! I noticed that the K3 mirror flop sound is very very slightly louder than that of K5 and K5-IIs.But the difference is hard to notice though. It is more of a shutter actuation sound than mirror flop.

I know K-01 is mirror less, but does K-01 also use electronic shutter?

I almost always pixel peep :D

Dynamic range difference is negligible to minimal as per DxO.

What is the vibration issue that you mentioned? I am eager to read more about that.

After reading complaints about K3's noise, I tested both the cameras in low light (FA50mm/1.4 @2.8 and 1/15 sec, ISO6400) with in-body noise reduction for K3 set at medium. The resulting picture at 100% zoomed-in was of the same IQ for both or slightly better in K3. When K3's image was resized to be of the same width as that of K5IIs, K3 was the clear winner. I will try to do this in a more controlled fashion and post the results.

*** Those who find K3 to be noisier please do this experiment, so that we can take this misconception out of our minds, if all agree. ***

Don't get me wrong K5 IIs is a fine camera. I can't let either of them go.

That is a valid point. K1 sensor has the same pixel density as that of K5.

If we enable high ISO noise reduction in K3 via the custom settings, will it match the IQ of K5 IIs?
That is something I never tried while comparing these two.

Edit:

I tried that test in low light and found no difference in IQ between the two. The slight difference I noticed was in favor of K3.

I agree! But K3 images are pretty close. K5-IIs is very slightly better at high ISO because of in-body noise reduction. Now that TAv mode is becoming my new favorite, low noise at high ISO noise is becoming very important. But I can get pretty close results with K3, I think.

K3 will fetch more money though :-)

I have a K5-IIs and a K3 but I am thinking of selling one of them to justify the purchase of a K1. Which camera should I sell?
I like the image quality of K5-IIs and features of K3! :-)
