How many lens clubs could you legitimately post in?

The difficulty can be deciding which clubs to post in if your lens fits in several, as you don't really want to be cross-posting the same image five times in one day...

Basic Photo Software

I'd heartily recommend "digiKam", which is available for Windows, Linux and Mac. As an open source application, it won't cost you one red cent unless you choose to donate at some point (which, hopefully, you will if you find it useful). Its real power is in photo library management, but it includes a pretty decent, easy-to-use raw conversion and photo editing tool... certainly more than capable of handling the basic requirements you mention, and much more.

I use it for photo management alongside Darktable and RawTherapee for raw processing.

You can download it here:

I'm in for the final time... 30 days, 29 hits, one miss. If my keeper rate for photography was that good, I'd be well pleased

Wishing everyone the very best of luck in the draw. I'd love to win the camera, of course, but so long as it goes to someone who appreciates and uses it, I'll be equally happy :)

Whilst I don't agree on every one of your points, Jonathan, yours is a very thoughtful and constructive post that proves we can express different views and opinions, even criticisms of our chosen brand, without resorting to inflammatory and emotional diatribe... I do enjoy discussions like this :)

K-3III vs K-1II, APS-C vs full frame, which is "best" & price relevance - my thoughts

Putting aside the explanations you and Ian kindly provided - which I promise I'll come back to (having just made a big mug of strong, freshly ground, calculation-busting coffee ) - this sounds like the same difference I notice when using the same less-than-stellar lens on my Samsung GX-10 vs the K-3. The GX-10's 10MP sensor is more forgiving of the lens... which is due to the bigger photosites / lower density, yes?

Thanks, both, for your explanations. I haven't had enough coffee this morning to get my head around this, but I'll try again later on :o

Probably the best thing I could do is to take some test shots with both my 24MP APS-C K-3 and 24MP full frame Sony A7 MkII using the same sharp lens. That way, even if I continue to be confused by the explanations (which is a distinct possibility :p), I should at least see the difference.

To be clear, though, this isn't because of format... it's due to the sensor's pixel density - agreed? For any lens (full frame or APS-C) the 24MP APS-C sensor in a K-3 is more demanding of performance than a 36MP full frame sensor (for the same portion of the image circle)... but if the same lens fitted to a K-1 and K-5, it should resolve in much the same way, as their sensors have very similar pixel density...

[New video Oct 27] New information about upcoming APS-C flagship model

It is... but it is what it is :o

We know enough about the camera for folks to make a reasonably educated decision as to whether it should suit their needs in key areas, and whether it might be worth waiting for. If they don't think it'll meet their needs, they have the three choices I already mentioned... KP, K-1(/II) or switch brands. If they're not sure but aren't prepared to wait any longer and/or have some pressing need for a new camera (because their current one has failed, for example), the same three choices apply.

Even though I won't be an early adopter, I'm as keen as anyone here for the new camera's firm release date and detailed specifications to be announced... but it'll happen when it happens...

I get why some folks must have a flippy screen. I also get why some folks must have GPS. I even get why a few must have both. For them, assuming they're absolutely certain they must have one or both features - regardless of how good the K-3III is in other areas - the choices are simple; either the APS-C KP or full frame K-1 / K-1II. Each offers different benefits and different limitations. There's another choice, of course, and that is to switch to a different brand's system that offers what they want. Three options, each very clear, and no need for further debate... am I wrong?

For those who feel like they might be prepared to compromise on the flippy screen and GPS if image quality, performance and user experience are first rate, I'd advise holding off on any knee-jerk moves. Wait until the K-3III is released and see what it's capable of. I suspect it's going to be one very special camera... but we won't know, and we can't start comparing it fairly to other brand offerings, until it has been released and reviewed...

I met him when I was a young lad, appearing on a kids TV show in 1980 (or thereabouts). He was ever such a nice chap. Sad to hear he's gone, but 85 is a decent innings, all things considered.

As well as playing Darth Vader, he was the UK's "Green Cross Code" man, appearing in a long-running series of national public service broadcasts teaching kids to take precautions when crossing roads...

No, there's at least you and me! ... and, I suspect, plenty of others. Having said that, I can see where "better" AF and clever stuff like eye recognition has applications for folks who are more demanding than me... and even I would like better AF tracking performance (or perhaps make that easier AF tracking) at times. Still, I'm perfectly happy with what I've got.

One thing I do like about mirrorless is that lens AF fine tuning isn't necessary, as the PDAF points are built into the sensor... though, as we've seen, that can lead to artefacts in extreme circumstances. Since this isn't practical with a DSLR due to the mirror being in the way during composition and focusing, I'd really like to see an assisted / automated AF fine tuning capability in future Pentax DSLRs. Nikon already has it...

With respect, that's an opinion rather than a statement of fact. You (and, indeed, the rest of us here) don't know what how much Ricoh spent in R&D, what the unit cost of manufacture is, how many they expect to sell over the product's projected life, and the average price it needs to sell at in order to be sufficiently profitable for the company.

If you're saying that without GPS and built-in flash in the K-3III, you wouldn't be able to justify paying that much for it in relation to your own wants and needs, that's fine... but you can't say whether the price is justified for the company, nor indeed for the rest of us who shoot Pentax APS-C.

This has already been discussed at great length HERE. The K-1 isn't "better" because it's full frame. It's different. The benefits of one format over another vary by individual user and use case. With Pentax, the only camera I'm personally interested in buying is a high-end APS-C model, because that's what best suits me. It has nothing to do with being cheaper than full frame...

I'd imagine that in DSLRs, the physically larger mirror in a full frame model also impacts the frame rate. I don't know that for certain, but it would seem logical...

Is it truly your contention that Sony, Nikon and Canon had little R&D to perform in creating their mirrorless cameras, simply because they no longer required a mirror - and perhaps, then, Panasonic had even less to do since they already had no mirror and simply changed the mount from micro 4/3 to L? You and I both know there's way, way more to it than that. The work involved in designing, prototyping and productionising those mirrorless platforms - even without the lenses - would make our eyes water.

Of course, having completed development of the first generation cameras, subsequent models arguably require somewhat less work since they build on what's already there... but even Sony's A7 MkII incorporated hugely significant internal and external changes over the original A7. They didn't just replace a couple of outdated components and stick a fresh new badge on it.

With respect, I think you grossly under-estimate how much R&D is required for even the smallest improvements, let alone a completely new system (whether mirrorless or DSLR)...

With respect, I don't really buy that. The amount of R&D required for Nikon and Canon to release a mirrorless platform consisting of multiple cameras and lenses is very significant indeed. I'm only guessing, but I imagine it will take a long time for any reduction in the costs of manufacture to pay back that R&D.

My Sony A99-based Hasselblad HV is an SLT camera. It works superbly, but there's no getting around the fact that a translucent mirror design results in some loss of light to both the sensor and viewfinder :o

Pentax K-3 Mark III (R03010) - Additional pictures

It may be a matter of production cost, but I tend to think not. The K-3III doesn't exactly look like a camera where Ricoh has cut many (any?) corners in order to save money. I suspect, instead, it may be a conscious design decision to couple GPS functionality from an accessory unit or smartphone. I'm leaning towards the latter... especially given the Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity. Such a connection would likely result in much less drain on the battery than in-camera GPS. It's all conjecture, of course, until the camera is released or one of the product videos addresses the matter specifically...

That sounds great. I've never made a fish pie before, but I like eating them, so this is another one for my list! :D

Incidentally, if you have an Aldi nearby, I recommend trying their fresh smoked basa fillets as a cheaper and equally-tasty alternative to smoked haddock. They're beautifully prepared, and properly smoked over hickory (no "smoked flavour" added). If I have one criticism, it's that they've added the very common but completely unnecessary yellow food colouring. Other than that, it's fantastic. I made a very easy and tasty chowder the other day with smoked basa, potato, onion, red bell pepper, sweetcorn, vegetable stock and the milk from poaching the fish (with a little mixed cornflour and cold water added for thickening)...

EDIT: I replied before reading your last post bove, where you mention smoked basa :o Oh well, great minds think alike
