New glass - old glass. Which lenses should Pentax revisit?

If I think about why I like certain old lens designs - such as the K 135 f/2.5 and the K30 f/2.8 - it's as much to do with their handling and small size as it is their optics.

The other thing is that many older Pentax lens designs have issues that one tends to forget about. Purple fringing is a big one (perhaps controllable with HD coatings) but the big bugbear I have is large minimum focus distances (MFD).

However, to shorten a MFD would require a fundamental redesign of the lens. The K-135 has a MFD of 1.5 meters for example. It tempts you with its beautiful rendering but then restricts you using it in many close-ups by virtue of its MFD. Frustrating.

Sigma K1 Lens Alteration

Hey Guys

Has anyone had any experience of Sigma's lens alteration service for the K1? - where they change the mount slightly to avoid the mount scratching issue.

I was wondering how people have found the service, how long did it take, what did Sigma actually do etc.

I am also interested to know if they do it for second hand lenses (ie ones outside of warranty) and what the charge might be. However, I can email them myself to find out that information.

K-1 and HD DA 35/2.8 Macro Limited

Looking at the examples above the K-1's new 1:1 crop mode might work nicely. It would cut out the hard vignetting but give you a little extra view that shooting APS-C crop - although I don't know what the lens' performance would be like at the top and bottom edges.

IQ comparison between Crop mode & FF mode

That's very true. However, I think the new 1:1 crop mode has more utility. With some DA lenses nearly covering FF the crop mode takes the hassle out of manually cropping later on.

But this only really applies if you already own crop lenses. I can't see the point of buying crop lenses specifically for use on the K-1. I suppose the exception might be things like the DA 15 ltd - because that's still wider than any production Pentax FF primes even after the field of view conversion.

UK prices are almost certainly going to go up because the has fallen so greatly that importing goods into the UK is proportionately a lot more expensive than it was about three months ago. Importers can absorb those costs for a while if they are able but prices on most things in the UK that are imported are likely to rise simply because of that. Before you start talking about any pricing policy coming out of Ricoh in Japan.

---------- Post added 09-16-16 at 04:03 PM ----------

The UK doesn't have Minimum Advertised Pricing to the best of my knowledge. I think it might even be illegal.

Indeed, Pentax are going to produce FF limited lenses. I think that's a given. However, at the moment the 3 FA Ltds are a good marketing tool and they have a good solid reputation.

Once Pentax are ready they'll add new DFA Ltds and these ones will have HD coatings, weathersealing and DC motors (probably) - but they won't be 31mm, 43mm or 77mm.

Maybe we'll see wider, wide, normal and tele or something - maybe 22mm, 36mm, 47mm and 82mm (just picking numbers out of the air). But not until the FF line up is more established and the FA Ltds have done their thing at attracting new users.

The Japanese street is pretty close to the new UK street price. Although still a bit higher (about 60 quid).

I am not surprised by this, and it's not something that can really be complained about per se re: the K-1 due to its good value anyway. As you say, annoying though.

I remember Pentax did this a few years ago now with lenses. A big price adjustment took the DA* 16-50 up by about two or three hundred pounds IIRC. Smaller adjustments happen fairly regularly.

The point with this though is its price rising within a products life cycle, not between new versions.

I assume in this case the rise in general is due to the value of the Yen and the issue in the UK is exacerbated by the steep falls in the

UK prices appear to be increasing by 200, which is about $350AUD, or $264USD!

---------- Post added 09-15-16 at 01:42 PM ----------

I'm OK now as I was able to get one at the original 1599, but there's always the price watch forum for this kind of information I guess.

It rather forced my hand as I wasn't intending to buy one quite now but TBH - as someone else said - the price certainly isn't going to be falling anytime soon. AND I was going to get one at SOME POINT.

Managed to get one from a UK retailer at the original price.

The falling against the Euro means that the original EU prices were already the same or higher than the original UK sterling price.

Being in the UK, I am fully expecting prices to increase because the value of the has crashed against other currencies in the wake of Brexit.

The K-1 is currently about 1,599 at the moment. So, are we looking at that rising to about 1,750 in the near future?

I think that page is in itself a piece of Pentax history.

I have used it many many times, and it's an excellent single resource for information on Pentax lenses. It would be wonderful if it could somehow be incorporated into Pentax Forums.

I think the format of it is great. If I am looking for info on a lens I think it is easier to find on that site than on PF - although obviously it isn't a review site itself.

New Pentax K-Mount Lens Line Up (update June 2016)

As far as the DA* lenses being updated I would think Pentax would be looking for synergy across the DA and DFA formats.

What I mean is that Pentax has limited resources so IMO it would make sense for them to design * lenses that work well on both DA and DFA where possible, particularly primes. For example, if the DA* 300 is updated I would expect it to be as an official DFA optic (yes, it's listed as FF compatible anyway). Similarly something like the 55mm I would think would become a DFA officially.

(Update) Use of Pentax mount SIGMA interchangeable lenses when attached to the K1

I suspect Sigma took the view that it was legally safer to address the problem when they became aware of it, rather than pretend it didn't exist. From a certain viewpoint I think that they should be commended for their openness.

Sigma 24-35 f/2 for Pentax?

There's got to be a lag of about a year at least before Sigma would be able to garner enough sales data to see whether it makes financial sense for them to make more K-mount lenses. Although, it's not just the K-1 of course. The success of Pentax's APS-C bodies would be taken into account as well - some lenses do cross the divide between the two formats.

Best wide angle lens for K-1?

With regard to the 15-30, I am hoping that Pentax introduces a new range of DFA limiteds that maintain the small form factor ethos of the DA limiteds. The new zooms appear to be excellent performers but apart from the 28-105 (which is not a fast constant aperture lens) they are all very hefty pieces of kit.

A 20 to 24mm limited prime would be a very attractive prospect. But hey, there are a lot of lenses people would like!

Has anyone had any experience with the FA* 24mm on the K-1? A review on the forum said that it performs better on the K-1 than the K-3 due to it's lower pixel density but not much more than that. I know it is a lens that requires stopping down a lot to get edge to edge sharpness.

I was wondering how small it could be. Its 50mm longer on the long end and 40mm longer on the short end.

Does anyone have any idea of Pentax could keep it to the same size as the DA*? Which is after all nearly FF, but the Sigma 100 to 300 Is pretty big if memory a serves...?

DA*10-17mm on K-1 at 10mm?

The problem for me with the FA 17-28 is that it's minimum focus distance is nowhere near that of the DA 10-17. I would imagine that this would make some of the more amazing effects that the DA can pull off more difficult to reproduce with the FA lens?
