I'm not holding my breath for much more than another maybe $250 drop, max. I simply don't see it needing to go to $1500.

K3-II might drop a little to get the stocks out, but that's about all I can forsee from here, the k1 is still too new IMO.

doesn't make much difference if it's Macro or not, if it's got a short enough focal distance, you're good to go. I've been known to use a 100-300 and 1-4TC this way... but the 180 is the one I really want.

Considering the pricing in the US is now around $1900 for body-only, I think we'll be lucky to see $1500 at Black Friday. That - $1900 USD - translates to around €1700 + VAT, so that's where your €2100 comes from. And it's virtually identical in .

Not surprised to see this, it was very much like this when the first K3 came out - very close to identical pricing across the planet.

If you shoot RAW bursts, there's a minimal difference - on the K3- with the 90MB/s vs 45MB/s in how fast the shots can be taken after the buffer is full. I'm not saying it's significant, but it's there. At least, trying this just now with a 90MB/s 32GB vs a 45MB/s one. No difference in the number of shots before the buffer is full (or if there is, it's a single shot and I can't count). I'm also sure I get better transfer speeds reading from the card, with up to 60MB/s on the 90s and 45 on the 45s. Can't corroborate that, though, without serious testing. Most of the issue, there, though, is card readers and poor USB3 implementations.

I found the K3 write speed on the 45 cards too slow with a HSM 70-200 and fast-moving fireworks.

I've dialed in -1EV for TAv, and occasionally I still lose highlights. Having said that, I've seen how much detail is in the shadows, so I'd rather underexpose.

I think I want the K5

TBH, the K5 is the first cam rumour in a while that had me say "I WANT ONE!". My K10D now has well over 60k actuations and a lot of hotpixels but is more than usable - and will be better after another mapping. I want the high FPS rate and excellent ISO performance at 1600+ - then I can stop dreaming about a 645D. The K5 may just be in budget.....

True, the K-r is more the replacement for a K10.

If it's not up to rumor spec, I may well go D700s or 7D. I'm not that wedded to Pentax.

Now I've played some, my EF500s are BOTH now HSS'ing properly. Huh? They wouldn't do this before! 1/4000 @ f4 - no problem.

Meh. I got so involved in doing that (with nice toothache) that I haven't extensively tested with the triggers. I will get around to this as soon as I can.

The Optical sensor was fast enough to trigger at 1/4000th, too.

trigger in my hand

receiver one attached to flash
receiver two attached to camera via the remote port

both fire at the "same" time. Whether it's fast enough is another story. I was trying to establish the ability to sync at faster than 1/180. I didn't accurately test it, I was proving a point.

I don't see why 1/200 or 1/250 shouldn't be possible, when I get time I will test. Might try tonight in some sunlight with some fill-in at 1/250, which is what I was looking for.

Hmm.... I don't know if this has been discussed before, but here goes: I found a way to make my K10D sync @ 1/500.

It works like this: I have a pair of Cactus v4 receivers and one transmitter.
If I attach one of the receivers using a 3.5mm lead and a 3.5 - 2.5 converter (as I use for my ultra-cheap home-made cable release), then the transmitter will trigger the shutter.
If I add an EF-500 running on FP (for high speed whatever) then I also get that triggered at the same time. The hotshoe won't go over 1/160 on the K10D.
Now, I don't know if this has been tried or discussed before, but I was playing with the receivers earlier on tonight and figured I'd test this. I might well try and do some fast water stuff now...

the 70-200 is my first choice but I have a strong feeling I can't get away with it.

So that means loosing the 50-200 and replacing with the 55-300, I think, for the time being and seeing what happens, unless I can get a cheap 300 somewhere. Will have to keep my eyes open.

The (recently acquired) summer house appears to have a shedload of interesting birds. My 50-200 isn't long enough.

So. Question: Is the 55-300 any good? Or should I use a TC? Or a prime? or a fat Sigma? Or the 70-300?

I'd like some semblance of speed (sunshine is a rarity so quality at 1/125 - f8 is a must) and IQ. Swans, Pheasants, Wild Turkey, I'd expect some moose too. Cam is a K10D, and budget is limited.
ATM I'm thinking about the K 300/f4, possibly with a TC. I don't have an issue with making a tripod adapter / finding a gimbal.

your thoughts?

SD cards speed on K20D test

disagree. An Extreme III allows an 8 shot burst; an Ultra II allows only 5. That's a big difference IMO. At least, that's what the camera says... the Extreme IIIs are consistent amongst themselves, be they 1,2, 4 or 8Gb. I feel the Ultra II taking time when transferring and while I was at the ice track.

Caveat: this is a Firmware 1.2 K10D, not a K20.

Another note: the Extreme IIIs are rated down to -20C, no? The Ultras to 0, IIRC.

thanks for the feedback guys.

For the two different customers, I was thinking along two different lines;

- cut the complete junk, but leave the rest in. Select a group of photos representing "quality". Note these as such. Categorise other pics - like "party" or "portraits" or "location" and provide these as another folder.

- cut the complete junk. Provide the rest, maybe limiting the numbers to the "better" shots, but maybe also with a personal selection. Depends on the customer.

Thing is, I did a couple of ice-track shoots over a few weekends and was stunned by the amount of work it involved afterwards. 1000 shots, 5 hours of pure PP, followed by another 3-4 hours for the good shots (around 10%). I figure this is the way it goes for a Wedding, too, and I'd like to make sure that my time is spent correctly.

ahhh, wales.... monochrome :)

Here some from the weekend. As was implied earlier, the thaw set in. I'm a good 3-4 weeks worth of winter further north than Helsinki (it's only 100km / 60 miles, but it makes a real difference)... Heavily curve 'corrected' in UFRaw.

Comments welcome - and yes, I've seen the dust, I'll have to clean.

One comment a professional image guy gave to me - let the people choose the photos they want from a prelim batch. Throw everything through RAW process and cut the complete junk, leaving stuff that's almost worth looking at, and that then gives them an idea of a) how much you took and b) they get to choose the shots *they* want, which you can then PP.

But how would you get this to work with the idea of putting images on a site for the happy couple to choose? Or am I completely off the mark?

Same thing applies for product shots, I think....but there it's easier, as the audience is limited.

...but the Netbook means another copy, which is a good start in my book. Besides, if you can then snag an hour Internet access - possible? - uploading becomes an option.

Depends what you want, how much you'll take, though I'd hazard 5-6 8GB cards would cost almost the same as a cheap netbook. Carrying a 160GB 2.5" or two isn't *that* heavy....
