Sorry, I meant K30 only got one mode dial. K10D has 2 dials, one mode dial and one for adjusting metering.

Bought one yesterday from Ted's (Australia) for $765 body only! And since I will be going overseas soon, I will be able to claim my 10% gst back so the camera will end up costing approx $690.

I am upgrading from K-10 so everything seems much snappier, not to mention it is lighter and smaller than K-10. I do miss the two-wheel control on K-10 but don't really miss the top LCD.

I haven't really taken that many pictures yet since by the time I got home it was pretty late but I will definitely be giving it a workout during my overseas trip!!

Best prime lens for beginner? (28/50mm)

When I see the title "best prime lens for beginner" the first thought that came into my mind is one that is cheap and has a big aperture (eg f2.8, f2.0 or smaller) because it allows you to play with depth of field and learn more about photography.

To satisfy the both cheap and big aperture criteria, you will need to look at manual focus lenses. Get an Pentax-A lens if you want automatic metering. As to which focal length, it is really up to what you shoot but the cheapest will probably be a 50mm.

Which portrait lens?

Larsenio,

If you can find a FA35/2.0 at a reasonable price (to you) then go for it. It is quite sharp wide-open and very sharp by f2.8. Even if you don't like it, you can probably sell it without losing much money =)

DA40 is another good option. AF is very fast and sharp wide-open too.

FA77mm for M85mm owner?

If AF is the main concern then I would go with DA70. I don't have Ltd77 myself but have DA70 and from my personal experience and other posts, DA70 seems to have faster AF speed.

I have got K85/1.8 + DA70 myself. Another reason, apart from AF speed, that I chose DA70 is the field of view with 70mm is more different than 77mm when compared to 85mm.

Thanks for all your replies!

Paugie: I was tempted by D15 because of its size but since I have have already got DA14 I think I will pass, unless I win a lottery tomorrow, then I will get all the Limited lenses =)

TKH: nice shot!

Lectrolink: I agree with you regarding the field of view of 21mm. I am still getting used to it. I am finding myself re-shooting the same scene a few times because the angle/field of view did not quite come out the way I wanted.

Forgot to add that if you shoot film, Sigma 70-300 APO can be used on film cameras. It is one of your DG lenses. I believe that Tamron 70-300 equivalent can be used on film cameras too.

LBA: DA21mm/f3.2

Dear all,

I have been looking for a 20mm AF lens for a while now, originally I was just concentrating on getting a FA20/2.8 since it can be used on film and is a faster lens. However due to its rarity and price I gave up. It is not until I got my DA70 last year that I started to look at DA21 seriously. My main concern was f3.2 but if you come to think of it, f2.8 is only about 1/2 a stop faster. I know for some people this half stop can mean a lot but not for me and most of the reviews I have read have been very favourable so I decided to go for it.

So far, I am very happy with the lens. The AF is fast, colour is to my liking and as I suspected, the f3.2 is fast enough for what I shoot. I will definitely be using it quite a bit since it is the only lens between my DA14 and FA28 (a very big gap).

For Melbournians interested in getting this lens, I got my lens from Camera House in the city but only for $625 (as opposed to their advertised price of $759). What I did was I emailed them the price from DigiDirect (a brick and mortar shop in Sydney with online presence Cheap digital cameras, SLR cameras, video cameras - Canon, Sony, Nikon, Olympus, JVC :: Digidirect Australia) and asked if they could beat the price and Camera House did. The person who handled my sale is Kellie Barnes.

Just to add my 2c, being a melbournian myself, I find it is much easier to get Sigma 17-70 + sigma 70-300 apo than other combos and cheaper too. Also worth mentioning is that sigma 70-300 will give you 1:2 macro.

I have got sigma 10-20, 17-70 and 70-300 combo myself.

Congrats on your purchase fishman. Samsung EX1 also interests me but there doesn't seem to be too many sample photos online yet. Do you mind posting some shots? I am particularly interested in its performance in ISO400 and ISO800 (probably won't bother going higher than that on a P&S) if it is not too much trouble.

Thanks

which: FA 50mm f1.7 or D-FA 50mm f2.8 Macro

Apart from having same focal length, I find both lenses quite different (to use) from one another. FA50/2.8 is a macro lens, metal body and weighs 385g (ie relatively heavy). It is sharp wide open already and gets even better stopped down. Being a macro lens, it has a very long throw focusing ring. So if you use AF and miss, it will travel all the way down before coming back, ie AF can be slow.

FA50/1.4, on the other hand, not very sharp wide open but very good by about 2.0~2.8. It is lighter (220g) and smaller. AF feels faster.

Due to weight and size issue alone, I usually bring FA50/1.4 out with me, not to mention it is a f1.4 that come in very handy for low light shots. That said, the few times that I have brought my FA50/2.8 with me, it has never failed me either =)

I can highly recommend Sigma 17-70. I have got one myself and have been very happy with it. Here is a few shots taken with it:

I have also got Tamron 28-75/2.8 and it is a very good lens too but the focal length is not as useful on the digital body as on film so I usually have it mounted on my MZ-5 film camera instead.

If you want super-wide and convenience, then sigma it is. The difference btween 15mm and 10mm is huge.

If you want portability and IQ (not saying sigma is bad), go for Pentax DA15.

How about either Pentax 28-105/3.2-4.5 or Pentex 24-90/3.5-4.5? Both are very decent lenses, with 24-90 being the better one

Tamron 28-75/2.8 is a very nice lens but heavier than the two mentioned above.

To WMBP: Sounds like the perfect lens for you might be the FA20-35/4 =)

To OP: Last time when I went on my trip (Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan), I brought DA18-55, DA50-200 and FA50/1.4. I did 95% of the shots with DA18-55. I am doing the same trip again very soon and this time I am taking only Sigma 17-70 and will be purchaing Sigma 10-20 from HK =)

I have got K24/2.8, K85/1.8 and K135/2.5 and they are all excellent lenses. I had a chance to get the K200/2.5 for a very good price but I passed on the opp and now regretting.

Another K lens to watch out, even though might not be as good as the others but a very good focal length on the digital bodies, is K55/1.8. Sharp enough (for me) wide open and very sharp by f2.8.

Thanks to everyone who has commented so far!

Photong: I find the lens fast enough for portrait so far! But please bear in mind I have only got the lens for 4 days. If I need anything faster, I will probably use my FA50/1.4 or K85/1.8 =)

Rich A: No problem with the AF and it is very fast, probably as fast as my FA135/2.8 (which is known to have fast AF speed among Pentax lenses). The two portraits were taken at F4 from memory. I always use selective focus and yes, center-focus point was used in the portraits. As for the AF loudness, I can't really say since I have never used any SDM lenses before. All I can say is I haven't noticed it being particular loud, ie it hasn't bothered me for me to notice it.

Cheers!

Hi all,

I was doing very well and hadn't bought a lens for over a year and half. But recently I have been getting a little restless and been frequenting photographic forums a bit more often than usual. One thing led to another, I started reading lens reviews and the next thing I knew I was checking out lens prices! And worst of all, I actually found a very competitive price on DA70Ltd in a local shop, here in Melbourne, Australia!

Anyway, cutting the story short, I dropped into the shop during my lunch break on Monday and got myself my very first Pentax Limited lens, DA70! As the luck has it, I bumped into two of my friends from work as I was going out to take some test shots and they had kindly agreed to be my models for the test shots :) Here is the very first two shots from DA70mm:
1.

2.

And here is some other random shots I took in the last couple of days:
3.

4.

5.

6.

So far, I have been very very happy with the lens. Focus speed is fast and accurate. The lens is sharp, colour is to my liking and the lens construction is faultless!

P.S.
For those interested, Vanbar (VANBAR IMAGING) has DA70 for AU$566.50 which is about $100 cheaper than some of the bigger retail shops here.

Cheers

I can highly recommend Tamron 90/2.8 (which has got a focus limiter which helps with focusing) and FA135/2.8 which is very sharp and has fast focus speed.

I have got a Tokina RMC 17mm/f3.5 (manual focus) that's very good. I got it for less than US$100, can't really remember how much exactly as I got it a few years back. The only thing not so good with this lens is flare control.

Zenitar 16mm/f2.8 Fish-eye is another option as mentioned above.
