The K20 lives!

I know this isn't Pentax related, but I had to comment on the "de-barking" of your shelties. I have a rescue Weimeraner that had his vocal cords cut. We got him when he was 7 he is now nearly 9. He is in great shape, but with one very bad habit. He thinks he has to protect us from all other dogs. Since he doesn't bark and doesn't growl, other dogs come up to him while on his leash with us walking him. We try and keep them away, but if they show even the least sign of aggressiveness i.e. jumps up, runs at us quickly etc, he attacks. There is no warning, no growl, nothing. He is not afraid of any dog, and has taking on dogs twice his size. We are certain that if he could vocalize, that most of these issues wouldn't happen. The previous own also doc'd his tail. So it is had to tell if it wagging in a friendly manner or a warning being only 3 inches long. He is not aggressive to humans, but cats, rabbits, and small dogs are just game to him. Other dogs are to be driven away because they are on his territory. We tried to socialize him at a dog park. The first two days were fine. He ran and played with every dog, small and large. Then one dog 20 - 30 pounds bigger and off of his leash, attacked our dog while he was still on his leash. In two seconds, he had the other dog down and was ripping his face apart. Luckily I was able to pull him off of the other dog in about 3 seconds, but the other dog needed stitches to repair his cheek. Everyone at the park agreed my dog was just defending himself. Now it is hit an miss whether he will play or not. So he no longer gets to go to dog parks, but only on walks on a leash.

Don't cut your dog's vocal cords. It makes it doubly hard for other dogs and you to socialize them, especially if you dog is one who is breed to protect and hunt.

*Used* K1000 w/ 50-1.4 advertised for ~$1600 in local camera store

I've seen similar prices on Craigslist because the seller had no clue on value of products, but this is a camera store. I wonder if they had a new intern do their on-line adverts who mixed the product names and pictures? Clueless

Trouble with KP and HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE

Was there a firmware upgrade to the KP that allowed it to work with the newest version of the 55-300? If not, did you get the right 55-300? I thought the KP was too old to work with the new 55-300 lens.

Abstract Diving Pelicans

I recently picked up a SCM-A 200mm F4 lens. Was a little concerned with it's capabilities based upon the lens reviews, but I am pleasantly surprised. I think the main issue with the lens is the long focus throw so it is hard to nail the focus. Not sure if I completely nailed the focus or it is because of the distance. These pelicans were diving about 200 yards out. Enjoy

Ricoh Mount and ME Super Focusing screen

I was out walking the dog this morning and I had two thoughts come to me. I'm not technical to figure these out, so I thought I would ask the readers here.

First thought. For those of you who know how to repair / build lenses. I have two lenses with the Ricoh pin. They are rounded so they cause no issue for my K-3. What I was wondering if someone could take a broken or cheap PK - A mount and swap it with the Ricoh mount and run some additional wire so the A mount sensor would connect to the A controller on the lens thereby creating a A-mount lens of my Ricoh Pin lenses? If so, is anyone willing to try. I love the color and capabilities of these two lenses and would love to make them an A mount so I can just set the lens to "P" or now "A" and not have to push the green button all the time.

Second thought. I picked up a ME Super body, great shape, but I don't shoot film anymore. I love the ME's focusing screen verses my K-3's. Anyway of swapping the screen instead of paying almost $200 for a Katz'eye focusing screen? If so, how would I do it?

First fungal lens, what to do?

I am looking for some experts to weigh in on this, but I'm not sure this is fungus as much as it is pitting of the coatings or even just very dirty and scratched. I thought fungus appeared more as a string instead of dots. I had a lens similar and after cleaning the front and back lenses with lens cleaner, over 80% of the pits / spots where gone. I haven't seen any come back either.

Luckily my 500 is a 500 prime with a screw mount. Not even sure of the manufacturer. My brother gave it to me years ago as a Christmas gift. Can't say I have found a need for it that much as it is too big just to walk around or hiking.

HI Lightbox, does your barrel wobble also i.e. move left to right or up and down slightly. When fully extended, I think there is about a 1/32" sideways movement

Pentax 18- 135 WR Zoom issues

I have the Pentax 18 - 135 WR Zoom that came with my K-3 that I purchased new a few years ago. I had to send the lens back for repairs because it was experiencing lens creep. A few weeks ago, It started to creep again. Now the entire front barrel wobbles. Any clue on how much that will cost to fix. It will still auto focus and seems to take decent pictures, but I haven't done any pixel peeping. I have noticed that if I push the barrel it will have to refocus, but it will do so. Then if I let the barrel go, it will lean slightly down and go out of focus, until I reset the focus.

I haven't noticed this before, so I assume that the lens needs to be fixed, but perhaps this is normal and I haven't noticed it before. Also, where is the best place to send the lens to get it fixed. I live in California in case that helps.

Tempted to switch to Canikon as risk mitigation

Why switch now. You have most of the latest equipment. You know that what ever you sell your stuff for, including free to me (LOL), it will cost more going to Canon or Nikon. Why not wait a year or two or five? When your current equipment no longer meets your needs and assuming Pentax/Ricoh doesn't have anything that can fill that need, then jump. But you have stated that as of right now, your Pentax gear meets your needs. Unless you have money to spend and you don't mind starting over. Then send me your gear. I know I could be happy with it for a few more years anyway.

Broken CPC 80-200mm zoom

I got the grip off. The screws are tight, but the slots they run in are too wide. I think this is going to be a trash item. I have two other lenses that cover the same range so it isn't needed. It would even cost more to mail it than what someone can pick up a similar product at a flea market or on Craigslist.

How is the easiest way to pull back the grip? Anyone have a video showing how that is done? Or pictures? The grip on this lens is the same type as I have seen on Vivitars and other single grip lenses that both zoom and focus

Broken CPC 80-200mm zoom

I picked up a ME Super, a vivtar 28mm P/K A mount, a camera bag, and this old CPC 80-200 MM f4.5 zoom lens. Everything else works but the zoom lens. It appears that the front lens has seperated from the barrel. The top part, above the focusing ring is loose as well. I suspect that it is broken inside. So my question, is this lens worth anything as parts. The glass elements all appear to be fungus and oil free. The mounting ring is still good. But not sure if it is even worth while trying to sell if for parts, or just trash the it. I only wanted the 28 mm lens, so the rest of the deal was just gravy as the saying goes.

Any ideas. here are some pictures for what there worth.

Tripod user manual

It is just another of those legal statements that lawyers have included in the product documentation to help limit the number of lawsuits. If it wasn't there, and someone tried to shoot a vertical video, the camera would fall and most likely get damaged. Then the consumer would sue the tripod manufacturer because the manufacturer didn't tell them that this could happen. (I know, not in most countries, but unfortunately, in the United States this type of stupidity has resulted in a number of suits, some of which have been successful.)

Amateur shooting sons wedding

No comment on the equipment. There are a number of articles regarding how to film a wedding. The main points I took away from them are as follows: Take pictures of the bride in her dress, rings, cake, dress, etc the day before if possible. (less stress and commotion) Next, take the picture of the entire group first. Then the Bride and Groom. After that take pictures of parents, siblings etc based upon who has the most pressing duties to be performed after the wedding. (Create a schedule if at all possible the day or two before of what you will photograph. Finally, as you noted, check the lighting in the church. Talk with the pastor or officiator to confirm if flash can be used or not, where cameras can be used, also if he/she will allow photographs of the actual ceremony. Then establish the shooting points in the chapel.

Good luck.

There is only one right answer for why you should buy the lens. That is, Because you want to! Nothing else matters. If you don't want to, then you won't.

Size question when shooting RAW

I typically shoot RAW on card 1 and JPEG on card 2 simultaneously. My question is when shooting RAW and you select a smaller JPEG, is the RAW file also shot with a smaller resolution? I tried an experiment but didn't have my tripod out when I did, so I'm not sure if the results are because I changed the JPEG size or a slight difference in how I held the camera. I took a picture of a flower arrangement on our table at both Large three stars (on my K-3) and then again at XS 1 star. I compared the two raw sizes and one was 28K and the other as 26K. Not a huge difference. So was the size difference due to RAW also recording a smaller pixel size or was it because of the variation in how I might have held the camera. Or in other words, does shooting RAW always record at the highest resolution?

Kensington makes a card reader. Target and Walmart normally carry them. However, your laptop might already have a card reader built into it so no need for a card reader.

Thinking of Starting a Business

Instead of saying you are starting a business, Advertise you are looking to improve your skills and that you are looking for models over the next few weeks / months. Then offer the bring a card / leave a card option, but also offer post processing or follow-on services for a fee if desired. Another option is to provide a free 4 x 6 to Nursing homes to take family pictures during specific holidays. Any additional pictures or services will cost. Bring some business cards and rate sheets. use Smug Mug to allow people to order additional prints or other prints. Not totally free to you, but fairly inexpensive and provides a way to grow.
