Will I need a special filter to photograph the eclipse, or will I be good with an ND?

Okay. I don't have a solar filter for the camera, but do for my eyes. I'll swing by Lowes and get a piece of welding glass for arc-welding. (That's a shade 14). A shield for gas welding (shade 10) won't work for your eyes, so I assume it won't work for camera internals either.

Would I be better off shooting at 18mm or 28mm and going for a wide scene with the sun in frame? Hmmm..

Thinking about using my 55-300 kit lens to photograph the eclipse with either my K-30 or my K-01, using the time lapse functionality. Any caveats to this? I'd like to avoid burning out my sensor or overheating my lens...

so, what's the latest and greatest Q body? With the larger sensor? I might just pick one up (and eventually the 06 zoom), if the prices are right.

Is this a viable platform moving forward? Will there be new lenses and new bodies to buy? I've got two original Q cameras with the 01 prime and 02 zoom, as well as the fisheye. I'd like like to have a newer body, with the larger sensor and wider FOV... but I'm a little hesitant. The original Q was fun, but the IQ is so much less than that of my K-01 (or K30), especially in low light, that I find myself rarely taking the Q with me anywhere. My assumption is that the bodies will get better and better... but if the Q is finished, I'm not sure I want to keep investing. Thoughts?

How long can I record video with the K01?

Well, that sucks. We spent a ton of money on the gopro, and it's still only barely adequate. And it looks ridiculous with all the stuff attached and sticking out of it. If the internal mic wasn't so absolutely abysmal it would at least be usable. Combined with the fact the GoPro doesn't compress video internally (meaning a 256GB card can only record a handful of sessions at most), it's really very, very annoying. The only good parts about it is the instant-on-start-recording, and the fact it can be activated and managed via smartphone.

Still looking for a camera that can do decent low-light recording, record many hours in a sitting, and has a microphone that can actually pick up two people talking in the same room.

How long can I record video with the K01?

Is it possible to record for 2 hours of video, straight with no interruptions, using the K-01? I'm trying to record client sessions and group sessions for my girlfriend's practice. Right now she uses a GoPro, with an external mic, adapter for that mic, and a whole slew of other gear... and it still doesn't work very well. Recorded files are humongous! They take forever to download to her mac, and then another eternity to compress to a usable format. The K-01 records to a usable format right off the bat, and it has a port for the mic - no adapter needed. So my question is... can it make a 2-hour recording? I know the K-30 is limited to 25 min, but what about the K-01?

Thanks.

Pentax O-FC1 Flu Card with K-30?

Okay, well there's a dirt cheap K-S1 with a 16GB FluCard on woot.com right now, and I'm considering it. How is the operation of the card now that time has passed and driver updates and apps have been written? Still dog slow?

Pentax O-FC1 Flu Card with K-30?

This looks interesting. Basically giving a camera the same kind of capture and transfer controls as a GoPro. But... now that it's been out a bunch of years, and has been updated a bit... how does it really work? Does it work with a K-30 (I doubt a K-01 will work), or will I need to "upgrade" ("sidegrade"?) to a K-S1? Interested in leaving the camera on in a group therapy room, and recording video of lectures and also individual therapy sessions for clinical supervision. The wifi control and data transfer will be very useful, and I'll be happy if it works even half as well as the GoPro Hero 5. The Pentax is going to have much, much better low light capabilty, and much smaller video file sizes. (Go Pro is really overkill for my usage). The only thing I'd really miss about the GoPro setup is the external microphone.

Thoughts?

Which Rokinon Fish-eye, 8mm 10mm or 12mm?

Wait, is there a 12mm and a 12mm CineDS lens? So there's four total?

8mm - fisheye for APSC
10mm - wide angle rectilinear
12mm - fish eye for APSC and Full Frame? Or is it rectilinear?
12mm CineDS - weirdo version of the above?

There are now apparently 3 different Rokinon fish eye lenses for Pentax. The 8mm, 10mm, and the Cine DS 12mm. What are the differences between these lenses, and which is the one to get?

I'm interested in the retro/vintage look as much as I am a very fast, very sharp lens. Something that's unassuming and fun. I wouldn't mind owning an MX-1 still, even as old as it is, but if there's something better that's currently available, even from another manufacturer, I'd very much consider it.

Better alternative to GoPro for low-light video recording with iPhone camera control?

GoPro Hero 4 Session doesn't support external microphones.

The Nest camera looks awesome, but it records continuously and everything is uploaded to the cloud. We would have to manually split the videos for the sessions we wanted to save, and that's a lot of extra work. What's more, the servers at nest are not HIPAA compliant, so that's removes it as an option entirely.

Better alternative to GoPro for low-light video recording with iPhone camera control?

I got the GoPro because on paper, the specs were good. Low light performance seemed good when I looked at videos that had been made with it, and none of the reviews I read mentioned poor microphone levels. I wanted something with the iPhone control, which is mountable up and out of the way, which will record when plugged into a USB charger, so it would never have to be moved. It was also important that the camera be unobtrusive, so clients aren't intimidated by it. Ease of use and user interface is a strong priority, and GoPro had that down. It was a known player in a sea of unknown quality, so i went with it hoping it would suit our needs.

The K-01 does not. It's a huge camera, and I'd have to set that up on a dedicated tripod with a Rokinon fisheye (28mm doesn't cut it), and it's big and obtrusive and doesn't have the ability to be controlled by an iPhone.

Also, I don't need 4K video. 720p is enough.

Rob, really? I thought the K1000's light meter was horribly flaky. When the battery starts to drain the meter doesn't swing as much, and I can't count the number of times I thought it was either spot on or one stop over/under, and it was really 4 or 5 stops over or under, resulting in completely ruined shots. What's more, the battery drains constantly because the light meter will continue to operate from the light that enters the viewfinder. The Super ME I have has a wonderful light meter in comparison. And a much better focusing screen to boot. Once I found cameras with reliable light meters and split-prism focusing screens, I couldn't sell my K1000 fast enough.

Better alternative to GoPro for low-light video recording with iPhone camera control?

My girlfriend is a therapist, and she's wanting to record some of her sessions with her clients for training purposes. I did a bunch of research and snagged a GoPro Hero 4 Session camera... and we tried it out today. It was terrible. There were two huge problems: #1 is that the microphone gain was horrendously low. With playback volume maxed out the voices can be heard, but the hiss level is very distracting, and some words just disappear. #2 is that the video quality is total crap, even in the higher resolution modes. The f/2 lens can't get enough light in an office lit by lamps (no overhead lighting). Subjects are dark, and the video is smudged and facial expressions are all blurred with artifacts.

Her iPhone 6 Plus absolutely blows the GoPro out of the water for both video and sound quality. (Even though it's an f/2.2 lens). Unfortunately the iPhone doesn't have a wide angle lens, and wall-mounting it so it can easily take in the entire room means it's no longer really useful as a phone. So that's not an option.

What would be an option? The GoPro was chosen for the ease of use - one button turns it on and starts recording, and her iPhone connects to it directly and can manipulate recorded videos or start and stop the recording from her phone. This is the preferred use case, because ideally the camera would be mounted up out of the way on the wall.

Does anyone have ideas as to an alternative? Budget is sub-$400. Priorities are 1) Ease of Use. 2) Audio Quality. 3) Video quality, in that order. The GoPro has #1 but fails on #2 and #3. Are there better options?

Thanks!

Sony/Minolta 500mm autofocus mirror lens for Sony cameras

Okay cool. That's what I wanted to know. Not possible. If I want a mirror lens that's actually usable, I'll have to buy a Sony alpha body. (No autofocus means not usable to me. I can't manually focus worth a damn)

I've looked at this lens a bit, and it's a screw-drive autofocus lens. I'm wondering how difficult it would be to convert it to K-mount and retain the autofocus. I've found all mirror lenses I've ever used, this one included, will focus a significant distance PAST infinity, so it should be possible to focus on a k-mount body with the different registration distance. My question is more about electronics. Would it be possible to swap the bayonet and electronics from a crappy lens over to this mirror lens, and have autofocus work on a Pentax body?

I had a similar experience going from the K-1000 film camera to the K-x. Couldn't manually focus at all, couldn't see anything. Put a split prism focusing screen in the K-x, and it still didn't help much. The pentamirror in the K-x is largely the reason I moved to a K-30. It's a lot better... still not K-1000 quality, but it's a lot better.

After spending nearly a month of back-and-forth to Ricoh representatives, and continuing to climb up the chain of power, I finally got some resolution. They really stick to that warranty period, not budging on the repair price. But eventually I wore them down. The message that did it was saying something along the lines of how I've been reading all the problems for the K-30 aperture block on the pentax forum, and also reading up on Canon and Nikon forums. I see all these happy Nikon customers who had their cameras fixed way out of warranty whenever the problem was due to a Nikon manufacturing defect. I was hoping to have a similar story to share on the Pentax forum, but instead I'll be posting a displeased review. And... well, they caved a little. I got 30% off the repair. That came to $144 and some change. Precision did the work the next day, and I had the camera back three days later (today). I've been playing with it and everything works so far. They replaced my focus screen and upgraded the firmware as well. I'm just playing with the settings now, to get it back where it was before reset it and then sent it in for repair.

So, I'm not thrilled about $144. But it's way better than $206. Since it's a manufacturing/design defect on their part, I was really hoping they'd cover the full cost. I would have been very happy if they split it 50/50. 30% isn't as nice as 50%, but it's better than 0%, so I took it. And... well, I'm not thrilled about it, but I'm not pissed off either. They worked with me a little, and that's better than I actually expected they would do. I was fully prepared to pay the full price and be disgruntled about it :) One thing that did disturb me a bit is that nobody up the entire chain of command could tell me if the new aperture control block would be a permanent fix. They just ignored the question. Told me they'd call me back and never did. If it happens again, maybe I'll try the guy out in California next time. I wanted to at least try Pentax/Ricoh before going that route, since my shutter actuations were so low. I'm really glad they finally worked with me, even though I had to essentially threaten them with bad press. I really didn't want to take "screw you, guy" as an answer. :)

Charles.

PS: Everyone I talked to was really nice, and really wanted to help, but were bound by rules. They talked to manager and a managers above those managers, until finally contacting corporate in Canukistan, and then had to escalate it there as well. It was a long, drawn-out process. Everyone was really nice, and I wasn't a dick or anything. I just was bound and determined that they were going to make it right by me. :) And I'm okay with the resolution. Not jumping up and down for joy, mind you, but okay.

Yeah, I've calmed down a bit. I am still upset at the low shutter count though. I had a good half hour chat with a manager at Ricoh, who opened a case and put it through to corporate in canada. Hopefully they'll have a resolution for me that will make me feel a little better about things. I talked to Precision camera too, and they're charging a base rate of $206.50, but can't tell me if the aperture block will be included in that price, or if there will be an additional charge for that part. Again, I escalated to a manager and they're checking for me.

I'm kinda torn between the guy at Pentaxcamerarepair.com and Precision. Precision gets me a full cleaning and calibration for an extra $100. Pentaxcamerarepair.com is cheaper, but he won't disclose the modification he makes, and I haven't found anyone that has used his service for a K30... would like to hear some reviews before jumping on that.

Even $202.60 is somewhat reasonable I guess. I'm not happy about paying it, though... but it's a *lot* cheaper than a new K-S2 body. And the S2 doesn't have AA battery capability or a nice big grip like the K-30.
