Hold a coffee filter over the lens and point it at the light source when you preset the WB.

Pentax- becoming the great unknown

Perhaps it may read as a conflict, but I would have been willing to give the KM a try, if it would have been available. There was only a 200 in Chicago, no KM or 20. I also do not mind paying for the local stores to actually have the item, but not at a 33% premium. Add the Chicago sales tax onto that (10.25%) and we are talking serious money. The recession is going to play havoc with the locals who do not acknowledge there is competition. Maybe someday I'll actually see a KM and give it a whirl.

I will never get rid of my trusty Super Program, 28mm, 50mm, 75-150 mm, 200 flash. But after scouring Chicagoland for a KM, I came up empty. Central Camera had a 200, but it's bigger and heavier than I wanted. I ended up with a D60.

PENTAX, PLEASE GET THE PRODUCTS INTO THE STORES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not going to drop $600 on something I cannot touch. That's why we go to stores armed with internet info. Just like buying a car.

My last rant, when will local retailers realize it's an electronic world? I went to Gary Camera and tried to get them to even budge on their price. No way, no how. I would have loved to buy locally, but $200 is a chunk of money. Their excuse is the stores in Chicago and online are not local or competing with them. Same with Ritz/Wolf stores.

End of rant

Ok, so where does one get a low priced KM here in the US? I keep seeing $350 being quoted, but want to avoid the scams.

I reeally have to agree with the lens switching issue. The family, especially on vacation, never has the patience to wait for "Dad" to swap for the next pic. Hence the popularity of the zooms. Unfortunately, the kit zooms are relatively slow, which brings its own set of compromises. It's very hard to justify purchasing a better quality lens when you just dropped 500-600 on the new camera and saved all year for the vacation. Add in some golf (or other hobby) and it's no wonder a single lens stays on the camera body.

I've been considering a new DSLR for a trip to Europe this summer, but am reconsidering for a number of reasons. Reviewing my past vacation pics, going back 25 years, and I realize I want a faster wide angle lens. I find most vacation pics to be building interiors, group pics, landscape. That brings the new DSLR up to around $750, half a plane ticket to Rome. I also want something smaller and less of a theft magnet. I find it amazing that I made it through Germany and England years ago with a superprogram and a 50mm. I'd be perfectly happy with a fast 28-75 equivalent on a 10 mp instead of zooming to the moon, and being easy to carry for 2 weeks.

How about a real entry level DSLR? 6-8 mp, fast sensor, AF assist lamp, kit zoom, kit fast prime, small and light, under $500. Oh, and the biggest thing, get the camera into the stores!!!!! Hell, Kmart used to carry Pentax, now I cannot find one to hold in Chicagoland. And I'm not buying one unless I can touch it. I love my Super Program and have a couple primes for it. Nowadays I get it processed and digitized to disc, or else use my Panasonic LX7 for direct digital.

DA lens confusion

FOV is exactly my question. If I understand correctly then, the lens is 40mm actual measurement. Putting it on a DSLR gives it apparent FOV of a 60mm. Putting it on a 35mm camera gives 40mm FOV. So the 40mm acts almost like a 50mm "std" lens. To get a wide angle, you need the 21mm, which gives a FOV of approx. 32mm lens. Wow.

DA lens confusion

I am considering buying a KM but am confused at the new lens selections from Pentax. I'm currently using my trusty Super Program with a A 28 2.8 and a A 50 1.7. Everything indicates these will be quite usable on the new camera, except of course auto focus, no problem. But after checking out the Pentax site, I see the new DA 40 2.8. It looks like a great lens to use with the KM. My confusion is on the focal length. Even though it is being advertised as designed for DSLR's, the specs show it to be a 60mm equivalent. If it's designed for digital, why the continued use of the crop factor? 40mm for $250 would have been great for indoor use, especially on vacation, since I usually find 50mm not wide enough. Next option is the DA21 3.2. I'm surprised at the price difference since it is slower. I'm stuck deciding between the KM or a D40 at this point, since it looks like using modern zooms is the way to go. Any help is most appreciated. Thanks!
