What I meant was that I'm not sure whether the firmware updates solved the problem that I had, which was related to some freezes. I'm well aware pf the fact that the speed difference is a consequence of the hardware used, as I mentioned.

And another colorful sunset from today, following the breaking of our latest heat wave and a dramatic drop in humidity. K-3III and HD DA 16-85mm.

Actually there is a difference between the 2 slots. Both slots will take UHS-I/UHS-II cards, but slot #2 will treat a UHS-II card as if it's a UHS-I and operate at the slower UHS-I speed. That's a hardware issue and Ricoh intentionally did it for some reason. I don't think that will affect the card's ability to store data other than to operate at a slower speed than would occur with the same card in slot #1. However, I seem to remember having an issue when I placed a 128GB UHS-II card in both slots. I'm currently using a 128GB UHS-II card in slot #1 and a 64GB UHS-I card in slot #2 and haven't had any problems since. That being said, I also haven't checked to see whether that problem was resolved by one of the recent firmware updates which I've installed.

I use a relatively high power iMac with a 2TB internal SSD, also using LRC (and ON1 and a number of other photo related apps). I have a couple of external 2TB SSDs, and created a bootable backup on each. Now, I update one of the backups every week, alternating drives. I'm never at risk of losing more than 1 week's images and have the benefit of not losing use of my computer if the internal SSD fails, because I can boot off of the latest backup.

Many years ago, as an engineering grad student, my thesis advisor went on sabbatical at Cal Tech. In the middle of his time out there, he flew me and another grad student out from NY and we picked up and sailed a chartered Islander 30 monohull, out of San Pedro to
Catalina. Back east we had spent a lot of time racing multihulls (including on a couple of multihull Bermuda races) and, as an undergraduate, I designed a hydrofoil sailboat for my senior design project*. We owned a couple of world speed records (back in the '70s) with that boat. In any event, we didn't have a great deal of experience sailing monohulls and, while heading towards Catalina, we deliberately put the lee rail under water in order to get some good pictures. Kind of tough to adequately keep control of the boat under those conditions! If we had put any of our multihulls at those heel angles, we would have been in deep trouble. Unfortunately, when I left school, somehow those pictures got lost. Nevertheless, I ended up willing to trade the excitement of a monohull's heeling capability for the sheer speed of a multihull any day of the week!
*There are some pictures of that boat (named [nf]2) floating around on this site.

I've had the HD DA16-85mm for over 5 years and used it as my walkaround lens, first on my K-3II and now on my K-3III. Many pictures taken over the years and no sign of lens creep or any other issues. I'm a very happy user and will frequently pair it with my HD DA 55-300 PLM for situations needing a longer reach. You, of course, may not need to fill that requirement, and should find that the HD DA 16-85mm completely meets your needs. It is, by far, my favorite lens and, from my experience, I wouldn't worry about its durability.
