smc da 40mm f/2.8 limited with pentax slr ?

You either get a camera that can’t manually set aperture on the body, but supports shutter priority and program mode. This includes most, or maybe all of the AF cameras and also includes MF cameras like the SuperProgram, but in that case you can’t set the aperture directly, instead you set the shutter speed and let the camera pick an aperture, or you put it in program mode and let the camera pick everything.

Or you get a camera that, like modern DSLRs allows you to choose the aperture on the camera body. This is a much smaller list. I believe the Z-1 and Z-1p is on that list, but I don’t know if there are other cameras.

EDIT: By the way, I have used both the DA40 limited and DA70 limited on my SuperProgram without issue. The SuperProgram is a manual focus camera, but it works just fine as in the first scenario above.

I ended up with a Cokin P filter holder with IR filter (effectively R72 or 89B) and a 49 and 52 ring. Total cost was about $50. Since the film is unobtanium, I’m holding off shooting until I have a plan.

I can’t find the link, but I was curious a year ago, and found an article that explained that when auto exposure first popped its head up in SLRs some manufacturers (Pentax, Nikon) started with aperture priority, and some started with shutter priority (Canon.). A lot had to do with how the lens systems were designed, and how easy it was to implement given their existing design. To my knowledge Pentax never made a solely shutter priority camera. They started with aperture priority, then added shutter priority with the SuperProgram. If you turned on both (set the shutter to “auto” and the lens to “A”) you got full program autoexposure. But if you want to shoot the SuperProgram in shutter priority only, you can very easily, you just need to make sure you have an A series lens, and dial it to “A”. Then you can choose whatever shutter speed you want, and the SuperProgram will figure the matching aperture for the exposure it determines.

Well, technically they process in ECN-2 chemistry, not C41. ECN-2 is what the color cinema films were designed for, but I don't know how different they turn out in one chemistry vs the other.

There were a pretty fair number of VW busses made (speaking of the split windshield variants up to 1967) But collectors interest have driven their value beyond crazy town. I used to have a 1963 deluxe (corner windows but no skylight windows). I sold it 20 years ago for $500. Today, it would easily fetch $25-40k. Basically one of these but in better condition:

TheSamba.com :: VW Classifieds - 1962 German 15-Window Deluxe Walk-Thru

So common things can get valued crazy (hows that for a car analogy. Sorry, I've only seen a morris minor once, so I cant come up with a Morris analogy.)

yikes, that a lot! Fortunately, Kodak's datasheet on HIE gives some suggested ISOs for different filter types. I think the filter I'm going to end up with is an 89B, which is not pure IR, as it lets a little red through. Kodak suggests metering at ISO 50 for an 89B or ISO 25 for a 87 and ISO 10 for a 87C. Nonetheless, nothing or almost nothing will be visible through the viewfinder (if I'm shooting an SLR.) So a tripod will be necessary: mount the camera, frame the shot, focus, adjust focus with the infrared focusing mark on the lens, meter, set shutter/aperture, attach filter, take the picture (or bracket my shots).

The other odd thing is the warning to load and unload film from the camera in a darkroom. (there is someone on ebay selling a roll of HIE in an old metal film canister. The canister clearly states to open in a darkroom, but of course the seller took the film out for the photo...)

I think he sold all 40 rolls of HIE in a couple hours.

I'd love to try Aerochrome as well. Both films seem to require a bit more planning and research, rather than just setting the ISO and shooting. I'll have to use the infrared mark on my lenses for the first time! Metering HIE seems the biggest challenge.

I figure since I got serious about film pretty late there are some things, like Kodachrome, that I’m just never going to get a chance to experience, sadly. Another film I wrote off was Kodak HIE infrared film. The only times I’d seen it for sale it was very expensive, with questionable history and storage, and usually just a roll or two.

Well, a seller showed up on Photrio with 40 rolls of 35mm, stored frozen in lead lined bags. Expiration was 2008 so relatively new. Price was high but not outrageous at $15 a roll. So I now have 8 rolls on the way to me. Hopefully USPS doesn’t x-ray it. I don’t have any lead bags, I don’t know how important that is. I need to order a couple of R72 filters. I figure a 49mm for my Pentax lenses and a 52mm for my Nikon lenses (and the K55/1.8 I have.)

I’m really looking forward to this. If you have any suggestions on shooting HIE, I’d love to hear them.

Was that processed as a negative or reversal? I know R100 was designed for reversal processing, but I assume you can process it either way.

My enlarger's timer has glow-in-the-dark lettering. It’s always made me paranoid so I throw a rag over it when loading film or printing. My darkroom is a converted bathroom and the outlet is a GFCI outlet with a red LED, which I’ve taped over with black electrical tape.

Yup. The nice thing is since the two charger plates are independent, you could charge an LI90 and a LI109 at the same time, even if the batteries need different voltages. I currently have both a Pentax and a Nikon plate installed, so I can charge both at the same time.

I use the Watson Duo from B&H. You can get it with several dozen battery different adapters, it charges two batteries, and the adapters can be switched out individually, so you can charge two entirely different battery types at the same time, it has an LCD that shows the charging status of each battery, it powers over AC and it comes with a 12v cigarette lighter adapter, it includes a USB port for charging other things. However, to the best of my knowledge it doesn’t charge AA batteries. I’m not sure what features you were looking at, but the Watson does almost everything the Hähnel does.

BTW, the Watson Duo price depends on which battery adapters it is packaged with, however the battery adapters are $2. So rather than paying $80 for the model packaged with Pentax adapters, I bought one with some unknown adapters for $40 and paid $4 for a pair of Pentax adapters. The base unit is identical.

While it’s certaily doable, it seems overly complicated to try to build your own when you can get very similar devices that do support the Pentax batteries.

very nice. Is the sky the result of an yellow/orange/red filter or the post processing? It looks good, but around here you won't get it that dark without a filter.

yikes. I'm up to about 30 rolls on my first set of batteries on my SuperProgram, so clearly there is a technical issue. Unless there is a piece of foil in the battery chamber bridging the terminals, repair will almost certainly involve a teardown and a multimeter.

I had told myself that there was no point learning a film that was discontinued. I didn't want to order from Japan on ebay. The occasional rolls that showed up on photrio's classifieds just didn't seem worth the time. So I wrote the idea off. When I saw these on thefindlab, I figured I'd buy some to experiment with long exposure, which is something I've never done. If I limit the 20 rolls to long exposure stuff, it will last quite a while for me.

When Fuji announced the pending discontinuation of Acros 100 there was a run on supplies and all the major retailers were sold out in days. I was just getting back into film at the time, so I missed it. This morning I went looking for some ektachrome to preorder, and two places had Acros 100 in 120 format and one place had it in 35mm, so I ordered 4 120 propacks (20 rolls.). I don’t know if this was one last shipment, but it was well enough timed that I decided to give it a try, especially for the reciprocity characteristics.
