This shot makes me proud to own the exact same camera and lens (as many do here). This silky smooth sky is great digital medium format. Nice!

For one of you who missed out on the deal for this lens at $2038, there is currently a new Pentax 645 28-45 lens for sale on Amazon for $2446 which is still a pretty good price. However the seller is "just launched" and does not appear to be a Pentax dealer. Still I think it is safe going through Amazon.

Very cool. I don't think Mt Brighton has been open once yet this year. :( If they have been open, it couldn't have been for long. You get back this way at all?

Just ordered the entire Promote Systems controller for the 645Z to make easier the task of bracketing long bulb exposures. I wanted to let everyone know they are running a 25% off sale until the end of the year by using the code "MISTLETOE15" at checkout. With all the options, it came close to $485 with expedited shipping, so the 25% off is quite substantial.

If you've had your eye on this system, now is the time at the Promote Control for High Dynamic Range bracketing, Promote GPS Receiver and more - Promote Systems website.

With the 28-45 as my primary lens now, my old Tamrac 9x Velocity Sling that I bought for a Canon 50D with 70-200 f2.8 fits perfect with room for 2 more larger lenses and a large pocket in front for accessories. I like sling bags for quick access to the camera when walking without having to set the bag down.

Great stuff. I've always felt the 645Z excels above the rest with highlight detail. Another great comparison between these three cameras would be a landscape with colorful clouds dominating the top 2/3 of the scene. I think I already know what the outcome would be, but to what degree is my curiosity. Still though, I appreciate the work done on this comparison is it is.

Love the smooth tones on that.

Love the smooth tones on that too. Wish we could get some of that cold here in SE Michigan. What skiing we have doesn't even work with 30-40s.

Here is my first go with the new to me, 28-45. Didn't prefer to change this over to portrait, but thought it balanced the shot as opposed to the original that extended x2 to the right:

Why do you say your D was 'new old stock'? Pentax still lists it as a current model on their website.

Clarification; new to me.

The auction stated they were 9.93 used, with a one year warranty. However, the lens is like new, just like Tony told GarethC7. I think the 9.93 ratings are just a means of CYA for Tony. Maybe it's respective of the box, which as I said was a little tattered, but I've had actual new boxes be in worse shape. For me, since it's got the warranty, it really is like getting a brand new lens for a fraction of the price. Of course, the real proof will be the photos. My bet is they were demos of some sort, but not the kind of demos that sits on a camera store shelf getting dusty and waiting to slobbered over by people with no intention of buying it.

The other item I ordered from Popflash; a Singh-Ray filter arrived today too. That auction stated there were very minor scratches on the glass. However, there are absolutely no scratches at all. Again, I think this is just CYA for Popflash, in case they missed something and to not oversell product condition.

Super excited to give lens a full workout tomorrow.

Just picked up my new 28-45 lens and all looks good but away from home until this evening so I'll have to wait to try it out. I know it's been said before by others, and I knew it would be big, but I was honestly unprepared for the size and weight of this thing.

The box looks a little tattered but the lens is just like new.

Good lord. Popflash Photo also sold two 90mm macros for 2k each last week:

PENTAX 645 MACRO 90mm | eBay

Like the five 28-45 lenses they sold, that's at least $1500 less than used market value. Being these lenses all carry 1 year warranty and are basically new, they could probably all easily fetch 4k each.

Just crazy.

Sure are some interesting happenings lately for this system. What I didn't know (until just now) is the DA 25mm was discontinued earlier this year. On the review page here for the 25mm states "The Pentax DA 645 25mm lens became available in April, 2012 for $4,995 and was discontinued in mid-2015 for unknown reasons."

lenses | Ricoh Imaging

Well, hopefully they come out with something wider, faster, smaller, less expensive and uses traditional filters. They can do that... Can they? Well sure they can. Yeah, doubt it. Can't hurt to dream.

When, I get that thing I'm going to test it like mad. Why would Pentax need to unload all those lenses so cheap? If there is a new MSRP coming from Pentax, I can't see it dropping all the way to that level. It's curious as well that they have to sell these as used, when they sound completely new in the box with 1 year warranty. Probably demos of some kind, I guess.

As for the pricing error possibility (already confirmed not to be the case by GarethC7), that's what I thought at first too since the 25mm was $3,028 which is a good deal but no where near as good a deal as $2,038 for the 28-45 lenses. At first I thought there was some sort of fat fingers punched in the numbers, but it appears not.

Popflash Photo will definitely be saved as a favorite seller on my ebay!

@GarethC7, did you ship with USPS? If you did, I hope all goes well. I happened to have another order with Pop Flash Photo (Singh-Ray filter) that is still on it's way. I was looking at the tracking info for that purchase and saw it was dispatched to the Santa Clarita Post Office. I was curious where Santa Clarita was so I googled it. Turns out this post office is a mess. Stories of packages departing their office but no tracking updates after that. One story I saw had a package bound for Canada go to ENGLAND! Well, sure enough, my package is stalled on 'departed Santa Clarita' and was scheduled to arrive yesterday. This is why I forked over the $67 for FedEx for the lens. See the link below for the yellow page reviews on Santa Clarita PO:
US Post Office Santa Clarita, CA, 91383 - YP.com

I sincerely hope you don't experience any problems with this delivery if you used their free USPS shipping.

Looks like they had a total of 5 on ebay alone. I was contemplating buying an extra one to make a quick $1500 but was skeptical of the deal in the first place so I held back. I'm thinking something must have been wrong in Thousand Oaks for them to part with all those lenses and get $7500-8500 less than they easily could have gotten.

Here are the recently sold 28-45 lenses on ebay:
PENTAX DA 28-45MM | eBay

@GarethC7, looks like they still have one more 25mm; still available on ebay for $3,028 which is a killer deal just like you said.

@Sarnian and Adam, sorry you missed out, but it might be worth sending an email to them to see if more will be available.

$2038: DA 28-45MM F/4.5 ED AW SR HD on Ebay

Anyone else happen to notice that POPFLASH PHOTO in Thousand Oaks, CA just sold (4) of these lenses today and yesterday for $,2038 on Ebay? Current market value is at least $3,500.

I was skeptical, but pulled the trigger because it appears they haven’t had a single negative feedback left with over 12,000 transactions since 2008. I happened to have another item coming from them through the Santa Clarita Post Office, which has 50 terrible and recent one star reviews on yelp. For this reason, I paid an extra $67 to ship with FedEx.

If anyone else wants to get in on this they still have it listed on their website, so they might have more copies to put up on ebay.

645Z Computer System Poll

Wow, I haven't seen something like that. That's closer to what I had in mind, but not really there. I mean picture tying to carry that thing through an airport, with those feet and permanently open side vents. Although, maybe you have something there.

What I'd like is something that would look like a large thick briefcase and be as easy to carry around, with some easy means to attach a monitor and keyboard for transport. It would seam that you could fit some decent hardware in something of that size. Granted a full on desktop computer could still go further, but this could offer more power than your highest end laptops for conceivably a lot less money.

The whole concept of 'laptop' as the only means of a portable computer just seams dated. As well, the concept of truly powerful computers having to be locked down to a desk is just as dated. My thoughts are 1) laptops like mine (Asus G74SX) is something that very few people use on their lap since it is huge. 2) nowadays, keyboards and monitors can be light weight, flat and wireless, you could use those on your lap if you wish if they were a separate combined product with that intention in the design, or you could use it at a table.

Corsair makes some cool looking portable boxes, but they seem more inline with someone wanting to go to video game LAN parties and less for the portability side. Anyway, this is the sort of thing I spend about 5 to 10 minutes thinking of doing myself then conclude it best to hope a computer company would do someday soon since I don't have the abilities in that sort of thing.:)

645Z Computer System Poll

Thanks for this guys. I've always been partial to the portability of laptops and I know, dollar for dollar, I can get twice as much computer power in a desktop. It's just that I like to take my computer with me when traveling, going to friends, etc, etc. That way, I can edit in the hotel room, on location or where ever.

I might investigate an idea I've had of building a 'portable desktop'. I figure all it takes is computer case with a handle on it. After all, for me the term 'laptop' is in name only. A bluetooth LCD with a foldout keyboard would be just the thing for this. Figure out a way to carry it in one tight package and voila... a new market is born. Yeah, all in one's like iMacs are portable, but I look at those as being even more cooling deprived than a laptop, so I've never been a fan. Maybe a large pelican case with internal padding would be the ticket. Mad scientist here...

FYI, I don't shoot to preserve the original scene!

In order of appearance:

1) Kensington Metropark in Milford, Michigan
Taken at about 3pm. Added sunset glow in Photoshop

2) Meadow along rail line from Techumseh to Clinton, Michigan
Taken at about 2 pm on a overcast day on a moving train at about 15 MPH. Added overall fall sunset feel in Photoshop.

3) Second shot after #2 shot above
Same details. Taken about one second apart.

4) Flag at Kensington Metropark in Milford, Michigan
Cropped to about 5% of original photo size. Re-angled the flag post for dramatic effect.

5) Three photo composite of Ty Cobb statue from Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan

6) Lake Huron beach at Oscoda, Michigan
It was a little windy!
