HD DA 16-85... Vs.....DA 16-45 .. sharpness and colors at the wider end (16-20mm)

I was tempted to get the 16-85 when it came out, but somehow shots taken with it that I'd looked at lacked something undefinable that my 16-45 had.

Unless the problem is deep in some on-board not user accessible firmware. A pretty embarrassing cock-up. My betting is that the next firmware update will disable horizon correction when on timer and pretend that the problem never existed ...

Interesting experience with Topaz sharpen AI

The auto setting process seems far too quick for Sharpen to be doing any too complex analysis of the image.

I agree that the optimum amount of sharpening depends on how the image is going to be viewed. In that respect Sharpen is a pixel-peeper's dream as it makes up texture detail right down to a crazy pixel level. I tend to use it cautiously and what I liked about it was that it did not give unwanted sharpening halos. Topaz have managed to break this in the current version and with my graphics card.

You mean like this ? This is caused by too much sharpening and/or by using wrong AI model.

Sharpen seems to be pretty good at deciding what needs sharpening, even without masking.

A good graphics card is a must. On my (10 year old) machine with NVidia GeForce 1050 Ti it takes typically about two minutes to render a 20 megapixel image.

In their latest (3.0.3) release of Sharpen Topaz have changed the AI models, trying to get more speed out of it. They have succeeded, but Sharpen now gives bad halos at times, making it pretty much unusable. The previous version (2.2.4) was slower but gave much better results. In both there is a difference in how details are rendered between CPU and GPU rendering - easy to see by looking at the difference in PS.

Also, the suggested defaults are usually too high, unless you like your shots oversharpened to death. It is quite remarkable what Sharpen can do though. Most of my recent shots taken with the little Panasonic TZ100 have been processed with Sharpen.

All in all, the Topaz packages seem to be very much 'work in progress'.

That is fine as long as you also allow for temperature of the camera and lens. And for ambient air pressure and composition as this will affect its refractive index. I'd also read somewhere on t'Internet that a freshly sacrificed black goat makes an ideal AF fine tune target ...

That seems reasonable. For shorter distances (other focus zones) any extra fiddle factor offset needed should be read from the lens rom by the camera.

I use a convenient church tower about 1.3 km away. So for my longest AF lens (300mm) it is some 4,333x fl and for my shortest AF (10mm) it is 130,000x ;)

Actually, any distance, as long as it is in the 'very far' focus zone as read back from the lens slip contacts, is fine ...

Faces are always going to be the hardest to make up because as humans we are pretty good at knowing when they are wrong. Less so with bushes, feathers, lawns and other random objects. Noise is also always going to be a problem.

In the realms of consensus reality laws of physics do not apply. What you get is what the AI net calculates that ought to be there if you had more pixels.

At least Adobe limits you to 2x. With Topaz there is no such limit and things can get pretty wierd ...
