While you are technically correct, a mirrorless system could use a existing DSLR mount, the experience of the real world is that no one thinks this is a good idea. As far as I know the K-01 is the only mirrorless camera produced with a DSLR mount and flange distance, and it was short-lived and commercially unsuccessful. I would think that if this was a good idea someone, somewhere in the last decade+ would have made a successful mirrorless camera with a DSLR mount.

There are cases where all the companies in a field were completely wrong about a basic technology for years, but the simplest explanation here is that no camera company sees the business case or advantages of mirrorless with a permanent adapter.

The Fuji GFX 100S is about the same size as the K-1, half the size of the 645Z, and it's 100 MP medium format, with IBIS and mult-shot 400MP mode. Of course it's a tad bit more expensive... But I think the Fuji MF system is the primary reason the 645 has been on hiatus. You can get the Fuji + Lens that's smaller and lighter than the 645Z by itself.

K-3 III release's effect on eBay prices of K-3, K-3 II, and KP

I don't plan on selling mine after I get the Mark III. Although... seeing how they're going for about $500 it is a little bit appealing to think of selling it for $500, I bought it for a little under $800 in 2015, so I'd have six years of use of a great camera for < $300.

It's probably more likely that I'd sell the K-30. That gets little use now, and probably even less once I have the K-3iii. My teenage boys could use the K-3ii on the relatively rare occasions they want to. I really need to sell the *ist for $50 or just give it away, it's almost never used. The idea was my now 14-year-old wanted a camera, but the K-30/K-3ii will be the backup that I'm fine with him using and those are far better cameras than the *ist.

K-01 - why did it not suceed?

Quite obviously Ricoh/Pentax said it did not succeed. They discontinued it years ago and never produced a follow-on model.

As for using a sunshade instead to compensate for lack of a viewfinder... in today's market that seems like a ridiculous idea. Nobody is going to use an ungainly work-around when you can get far more advanced mirrorless cameras with EVFs from other manufacturers. Not unless you already own a K-01 and don't care to upgrade. Especially when a KP or a K-S2 are only slightly larger and have good viewfinders.

In a world where DSLRs are seen as a tool for grandpa's holiday, an anime-inspired look is exactly the point. I think Ricoh would be disappointed by anything but the "goodness, what a monstrosity!" reaction from their usual core demographic. This is specifically targeted to people who don't want a stodgy black camera to disappear with into the crowd while queuing up to see the Washington Monument.

28mm Limited for APS-c?

For a long while I wanted a 20-something mm DA Limited lens that was WR, preferably with an in-lens motor. I think that would be a great, small, weather-sealed pancake, walk-around prime on APS-C. I think I'd use it all the time.

But after the new FA21 was announced I caved and bought a second hand 20-40 LTD. Looking at Pentax' pace and priorities I just don't see updating the DA Limiteds to WR and in-lens motors with the 20-40 already being available. The 20-40 isn't a pancake, but it's a good lens, even if mine has some focusing problems (it could really use about a +13 micro adjust on my K-3ii, when +10 is the max).

Which, of course, makes about as much sense as buying a $500k Ferrari and putting a 35 mph governor on it. It might be a fun experiment if you have $100M in the bank and just don't care about money. But for the 99.9% it makes infinitely more sense to buy a Volkswagen. The VW covers almost every conceivable use case, and costs 1/30th as much, without considering cost of ownership. For 99.9% of photographers buying a 100Mp+ camera so they can theoretically, occasionally print 2x3m prints at 300 dpi is as much overkill as buying a Ferrari over a VW.

It's cool that machines with unbelievable capabilities and unreachable price tags exist. But for hobbyists almost all of them are completely irrelevant and wholly unnecessary.

---------- Post added 03-04-21 at 07:02 AM ----------

The other side of that argument is that for many use cases you're better off with higher pixel density of a smaller format sensor with faster readout speeds than a 100Mp medium format camera. Medium format has never been known for autofocus capabilities or reach or frame rate, and if you're trying to capture an image of a far away animal without scaring it off you're probably better off with a camera designed for that situation rather than one that you might be able to do massive cropping on a wider angle shot. Even on full frame you'd need a 450mm lens to get the equivalent reach of the PLM on APS-C, so you're probably using a camera far less optimized for the shot that's much bigger, heavier and more expensive for little or no gain. Especially if the K-3 Mark III really does have equal or better high ISO performance compared to a K-1II.

All of these resolution and format arguments are about slightly moving the needle on a exponential or logarithmic curve. Each $1000 and pound of weight gets you a 2% better shot. In some edge cases.

You're assuming the equivalence of external software doing the processing that Pentax (or other cameras) do as part of the process of turning sensor data into RAW files. I don't know that that is true. I think it's plausible that the camera's embedded software/firmware has very specific things it does to correct for noise, color fidelity, etc that other external software would not be able to.

I don't particularly care how they get there as long as they get there. It's a false purity to think hardware = real, and software = fake. The only thing that matters is the end result. The K-3ii has a max ISO setting of 51,200 and that's only usable for reh321's security cam photos of bigfoot raccoons. The example they've shown of 102,400 looks better than 12800 on the K-3ii. Shooting youth sports at night it's commonplace to have to use 12,800 or higher, with compromises of shutter speed, so there are real-world implications of ISO settings at these levels.

Of course I want to see more examples and actual RAW files and reviews. I'm not expecting 2, 3, 4 stops of magic. But if I can get better-than-KP results at very high ISO that will be nice.

Yes, I saw that. I find it extremely difficult to believe that many people getting paid for their photography are going to use a much more difficult and expensive process with almost no difference in the end result because of some nebulous, subjective concept that "film is better". Some, sure. You can find a few people going against the grain in any endeavor, even if it's unproductive. But it's going to continue to be a small niche in the overall market.

I think it's like the sommelier and the wine. He could probably tell the difference between the $20 bottle of wine and the $1000, but even that wouldn't be a 100% success rate. For a typical person going to a restaurant there's no way. If you asked me to pick out a medium format shot from a APS-C that had both been printed and hung on a wall, unless it was a very specific type of photograph tailored to the various formats' strengths, I doubt my success rate would be much better than random. Same with film emulations vs. real film. I'm sure I couldn't tell in most cases. And as someone who's shot with a DSLR for a decade I'm in the 95th percentile. You're probably in the 99th and could tell, but the vast majority couldn't and only care if the photo is interesting or striking or beautiful.

It's been 20+ years since digital cameras became mainstream. The vast majority of people haven't shot a roll of film in decades. There may be tiny niches of people shooting film, but for all but a small handful of people "nice but isn't not film is it" isn't something that would ever occur to them because they'd sooner take a steam train to work than shoot film. For 99% of the population digital IS photography, there's absolutely no dithering in their minds about film vs digital.

I'd bet the average person on the street when asked about film would be like the person who got in my car last year, saw the manual shifter and said "oh wow, I didn't know they made those any more."

And almost no one cares how you got a good image, almost no one gives you extra credit for doing it on film. They just know if they like the end result or not.

---------- Post added 02-28-21 at 05:05 PM ----------

How would they know unless they saw you shooting it? I think it would be like the blind taste tests with wine, where the same $20 wine was put in bottles that originally contained $5 wine, $20 wine, $100 wine, and $1000 wine, and the people tasting it liked the $1000 wine much better. Even though it was actually $20 wine.

I'd bet that you could put on an exhibition of medium format or large format photography, but without telling anyone all the pictures were taken with a Pentax Q, and everyone would gush over the pictures. Same if you had a "film" exhibition and took all the pictures with a Fuji with jpg film emulations and printed them.

That's good. It made no sense whatsoever to develop these advanced subject recognition modes that would greatly enhance widely varying types of shooting, with very specific settings needed for each, but then limit the use to very basic green mode shooting.

I'd want to set up, say, f/7.1, 1/1250th shutter, TAv, high-speed shutter drive, AND some type of subject tracking for sports... but then the camera is going to make me pick just one of subject tracking or my settings? I hoped/assumed that wasn't the case all along because you might as well not have the feature if you can't optimize the settings.

We all have our unconscious conceits and biases. Some of us get a little shot of oxytocin and dopamine when Pentax releases a camera once every three years, some buy into the marketing schemes that say you could see a photo on the wall of an exhibition and use the Force to divine what brand of camera it was taken with.

My standards are if I can get a compelling photo that I can use to fill my 32" 4K display. On the K-3ii that is a challenge at anything over ISO 3200 or maybe 6400. Your ISO 800k shot is fine in a security camera kind of way, if you're interested in what that noise was in the back yard, but I don't think you'd frame that for your friends.

ISO 100k shots at the start of this thread look more like 6400 on a K-3ii, like something you could actually view at 4000 pixels on the long side and not wince. That would be pretty impressive.

Those first photos in the original post make it look like ISO 102400 on the K-3iii are at least as good as 12800 on the K-3ii. Maybe better. That almost seems to good to be true.

But let's say it is... that's three stops better performance. That's like swapping out a 55-300 PLM for a 70-200 f/2.8, if not more. I shoot soccer in poor lighting and I'm often pushing shutter to 1/400th (optimal would be more like 1/1250), ISO to 12800, aperture as wide as it'll go for the focal length, and with a K-3ii the results are barely acceptable at small sizes. With a K-3iii it looks like I should be able to get similar results with 1/1000th or faster shutter in the same conditions. Or use 1/600th or 1/800th and the equivalent of ISO 3200 or 1600 on the older camera.

I'm very interested in seeing more real life results, because I'm struggling to believe 100k ISO is usable. That would be wonderful, just a massive improvement. Two stops would be fantastic.

I'm reading all this ranting and raving about how cameras with color and a little style and flash are so uncouth and it's hard to not imagine a bunch of mutton-chopped, portly aristocrats sitting around the drawing room with tea, hrrumphing about the poor chap who came to dinner in a black tie without tails. Oh the scandal! Did his under-butler not tell him what appropriate dinnerwear is in polite society? Goodness. Who doesn't have a white tie and tails, must be the son of a laborer? And did you see? He had a (*blushes*) red camera with an unsightly overhang on the top! Might as well have had a prostitute on his arm and some of that scandalous jazz on the Victrola! Piffle, my dear boy, piffle!! Perhaps in a provincial backwater of the Empire, but not here, not on my watch!

I don't get it, either. Where's joy in having a camera that's a piece of electrical tape away from being indistinguishable from every other Canon and Nikon DSLR?

But then again most people live in rows of identical houses and drive nearly identical crossover SUVs in Hertz White, while I have a custom-built house with a Victorian turret, drive a car that's Estoril Blue, and own a blue K-30. I'd much rather have one of these special edition K-1s than the generic black.

I looked it up, and apparently there were no silver Model Ts. Although it appears that the original 1908-1914 units were only available in gray, green, blue, and red. After those wild and unrestrained days of youth Ford reconsidered and almost all Model Ts from 1914-25 were black. Ford was a strange mix of manufacturing innovation and an almost worshipful nostalgia. Anyone interested should read the book Fordlandia, about his quixotic efforts to build a naively idealized 1870s community in the Amazon jungle to produce rubber.

Ford's colors mirrored Pentax to some degree, where 10 years ago you could easily get a K-30 in a dizzying variety of hues but now the only non-black models (aside from these very limited special editions) are silver.
