Canon and Nikon were for many years the ‘also rans’ : Pentax outsold all of them put together . If Pentax established a separate premium brand , standing apart from their ‘ value for money ‘ brand , they could charge Leica or Hasselblad prices without needing to sell in large numbers : customers would be paying for exclusivity.

Having grown up with Pentax , starting with my KM circa 1975 and working my way up the range to two LX cameras , which I used for over two decades before moving to digital circa 2005 with a used *istD , which I still have , I can see where the OP is coming from .

My 9 year old son started out with a V-Tech Kiddizoom camera ( a camera designed especially for children : one of the main features is that it has twin viewfinders which , being put to both eyes , encourages the camera to be held more or less level ) ; when he outgrew that , he got an inexpensive Canon compact camera , which he uses all the time , and is becoming quite adept with the ‘Photos’ application on the older iMac we passed on to him .

While I now shoot with a K-1 and K-3 , and sometimes my K-01 , I have kept my *ist D for my son and will give it to him on his 10th birthday .

I also have an older daughter , and started her off with one of my MX film cameras , which she used for a while , before buying her the then current model K-10D for her 21st birthday ( she still uses it ) and later giving her one of my two *istD bodies as a backup camera .

There have been rumours over the last few days of a K-1 Mk ii. There has been debate over the possible name for such a camera ; if indeed it is an update of the K-1 , then why not K-1 Super ?

It occurs to me that we are approaching the centenary of the founding of Asahi at the end of next year .

Just as the LX was named to commemorate the 60th anniversary when it came out , how fitting would it be for them to launch a class leading professional camera , above the K-1 , in November 2019 and call it the Pentax C ?

Then again they could resurrect the Asahi name and use it as an Uber brand , just as Mercedes did with Maybach , VW did with Audi or Toyota did with Lexus , and brand the new top camera as the Asahi C .

It could be a Japanese Super brand , built to compete head on with the likes of Leica or Hasselblad ; and what better name with 100 years of illustrious history behind it ?

Lightroom won't read my K-3 PEF files...

I too just got my K-3 on Tuesday , along with a K-01 , and a couple of Limited lenses :)

Both cameras are simply stunning - that the K-3 is so was no surprise , but I was very pleasantly surprised just how good the K-01 is with the DA 40mm Ltd pancake lens I bought to accompany it . The K-01 is the replacement for my Canon G11 compact and , although a bit larger , is still small enough to tote around and is streets ahead on image quality .

I have yet to try either with my collection of SMC-M glass built up over the last 40 or so years of shooting Pentax .

Since I am still running a PowerMac G5 ( dual 2.5GHz with 8Gb RAM ) on 10.5.8 which is the highest OS the machine will support and CS3 along with LR 2 , both of which can be taken no higher on this machine , I had anticipated that it would not recognise the PEF files from these cameras . Up to now , the G5 has been more than sufficient to handle PEF files from my two *istD cameras , and the Nikon D300 I use at work , as well as HDV video from my Sony HVR V1e editing in FCP 6 .

However , with the advent of the new MacPro , there are loads of people offloading the previous model Mac Pro for bargain prices and I have just bought , but still awaiting delivery of , an 8 core 2008 Mac Pro , onto which I can install Snow Leopard then upgrade to Mavericks before I take out the Adobe CC subscription for PS and LR .

In the meantime , I have found that LR2 opens my DNG files from both of the new cameras , although the G5 now seems quite slow for the first time . I haven't attempted to use Photoshop CS3 yet , so I don't know how it will cope .

My new machine will hopefully arrive in the coming week , it was posted yesterday , so not too long to wait .

Why do people want a Full Frame sensor?

I just want a camera with a viewfinder big enough and bright enough that I can see to focus sharply , and I want to be able to use my wide angle lenses as intended . I did buy an *istD to get into the digital age , and have looked at later models from the K10 onwards without any great desire to upgrade ( mind you , I used my LX's for over 20 years without seeing anything I'd want to upgrade to ) . Having bought some AF lenses for the digital body , I also bought an MZ-S to use with them , but most of my lenses being SMC-M , I need a camera with a proper viewfinder . I seldom print bigger than A4 , so the *istD is good enough , although I can appreciate later cameras have seen improvements in IQ , but that would be no reason for me to upgrade .

Any good excuse for buying K-7?

I won't be making excuses , but I WILL be getting a K-7 . Mind you , I'm still using my *istD at the moment : all the later *ist models I viewed as downgrades rather than upgrades ; the K10D was nice ( I bought my daughter one , but held off myself) ; I was tempted by the K20D but decided to hold on that little bit longer - glad I did now as I wouldn't have changed from a K20D :D

I'd like solid , rugged construction that can take a few knocks ; weather sealed so I can use it out in the rain or at fire scenes where I have to contend with smoke , steam , heat and water ; good low light performance as a lot of my work is at night ; faster AF ; FF and better viewfinder so I can use all my old manual K Mount lenses and see to focus them manually ; classic TTL support so I can use my existing Metz flashguns ( 70 MZ-5 , 54 MZ-4 , 45 CT-5 ) ; PC flash connection ; a choice of Li-ion rechargeables or AA for emergencies ; CF memory cards ( less fiddly than SD ) ; 5 FPS useful but not vital .

I'm happy to have a bigger , heavier camera as they tend to be easier to hold steady .

Price ? Don't want to pay more than I have to , but I'll pay the required price for the 'right' camera .

Meantime , I'm still using the *istD , MZ-S and LX .

I must have started out in photography circa 1970 ( in which year I would have been twelve ) with a Kodak Instamatic 133 which I got as a gift . It was enough to get me interested but before long I wanted something better and took over my dad's old Ilford Sportsman 35mm which sat in a cupboard . At some point I upgraded to a Zeiss Contina which I saw in a secondhand shop and liked the solid feel of it . By this time I was a member of the camera club in my home town and another member was selling a Rolleiflex T , so I got into medium format and used this camera for many years , along with the Mecablitz 500 flash and Weston Master V meter that came with it .

By the mid 1970's , when I had my first paying job , I decided I wanted a 35mm SLR . One of the guys in the camera club had a Pentax ESII which I had played with and liked a lot but could never afford ; I could , however , just stretch to a new KM with the 50mm f1.7 lens and so I started with Pentax .

Over the years , I added various lenses , got an ME , then an ME Super , a MX , then a second one , finally getting first one LX then a second one . I never parted with any of my old cameras , except for the ME which packed in and I threw it out ; all the others still work and I still have them .

By the time I had the two LX's , I really could not see anything further to upgrade to and continued to use these for the next twenty years or so , just adding lenses and accessories every now and then .

Alongside the LX's , I added a couple more Rollei twin lens reflexes , then eventually sold them off as they were not getting used ( regretted it as soon as they were gone ) . The only other non-Pentax camera I have had ( and still have ) is a Rollei 35S compact , which was my 'carry everywhere' camera .

With the advent of digital photography , I kept an eye on what was out there , still using my LX's , and wondered why Pentax had not entered the market . Eventually , the *istD came out , I played with one in a shop and was highly impressed but could not afford one . A couple of years later , they could be bought secondhand and I got one for a reasonable price , complete with battery grip and kit lens . The kit lens it came with had seen better days but the dealer kindly took it back and gave me a generous allowance against a Sigma EX 15-30 zoom which I was and am very happy with . Besides that , I use all my old manual K mount glass to good effect on it . Being impressed with the Sigma , I bought some more Sigma AF lenses and am happy with them .

Having got used to AF , I also bought a secondhand MZ-S also with the battery grip : this and the 'D' are now my two main cameras ; I still carry an LX body in my kit but this is only used in 'hostile environments' where I would not wish to expose the newer cameras ( I work for the Fire Service and often have to work in extremes of temperature , humidity , water pouring down , dust , smoke etc , none of which are good for cameras with sensitive electronics inside ) .

With the advent of eBay in recent years , I have also picked up a couple of older models , purely for nostalgic reasons , and acquired an S1a then an ESII , both of which reminded me of times in the camera club back in my youth . Both these cameras work , but they are really just ornaments in my living room .

Last year , I bought my daughter a K10D for her 21st birthday . So far , she uses it but has not developed the keen interest in photography I had at her age .

I had thought about upgrading , first to a K10D , then to the K20D . Whilst both cameras are very nice , rumours of a forthcoming 'pro' model of higher specification , coupled with still my being reasonably content with what I have , have made me inclined to hold off for now .

Down the years , I have managed to have various jobs that involved photography to a greater or lesser degree : firstly as an audio-visual technician in a school , then working for a wedding photographer , mainly doing video work but filling in with photography when required , working for a conference & presentation company doing corporate work and finally in my present job with Strathclyde Fire & Rescue doing a mixture of PR/corporate and forensic work . My current employer provides me with Nikon equipment , but I still like to use my own cameras and take my best pictures with Pentax !
