A couple of shots from our Sunday afternoon ride on a historic train. All K-1 + DFA 24-70.
There sure is something special about those old trains!

Extremely low temperatures : What to expect and how to counter-balance it?

With the exception of batteries and humidity condensation (when returning to room temperature) the body is unlikely to cause problems. It is just as important to make sure your own gear allows you to stay outdoors long enough. Especially gloves/mittens and footwear can be critical.
When it comes to lenses, I know a couple of cases where the lubricant in Sigma zooms needed to be replaced to get the lens working in this kind of temperatures. Camera repair shops up here know what works in the winter. I have a couple of Sigma primes, which work just fine with their original lubricants. Mechanically complex zooms are more likely to be affected. My Pentax zooms have always worked fine at temperatures like this.

Don’t know about the 45. However, I have used various old Metz flashes with all my DSLRs without problems.

Some of these acrylic laminates would probably work wonders for a picture with dramatic contrasts and reflections. This would also eliminate the need for a glass.
Prints like this are a bit more expensive, but produce a beautiful 3D look. There are several brand names for these, Silisec etc.

This far north days are now rapidly getting shorter. The high season for all kinds of light festivals is here. The K-1 continues to impress with itīs low light capabilities and DR!

Pentax K1 or Pentax K1 Mark ii

I upgraded from K-3 to K-1 and thereafter MkII. I was impressed by the low light capabilities and dynamic range of the K-1. The higher the ISO, the bigger the difference. The difference between Mk I and Mk II is less profound. The review on the forum is spot-on.

K1 Warranty did you need it?

I have not had any warranty issues with my K-1. My earlier experience with crop bodies is somewhat different. With both K-10 and K-5 I had to use the warranty. With the K-7 and the K-3 there were no such issues. The K-10 and K-5 cases would have been costly without warranty. Therefore I think it has been worthwhile buying cameras with warranty included.

Would the O-ME53 eye cup for my K3 be worth it (for birding).

I have the magnifier on both crop and full frame bodies. The only drawback is that it somewhat limits your field of view . You need to move your eye position to see the edges. However, I still find it very usefull.

K3ii or K1

I have owned them both. To me the most important differences are:
- frame rate and speed. K-3 II has a much faster frame rate. If this matters for you, go for the K-3
- low light performance. Here the K-1 excells.
- Dynamic range: see above
- size and weight. K-1 is noticeably heavier. Depending on your lens choises this may or may not matter.

To me the MP number has become almost irrelevant. For my latest exhibition I had two K-3 shots (base iso) printed at 100 cm x 150 cm. With a bit of post processing they were just fine even for gallery use. If you do heavy cropping, extra MPs give you some leeway.

Still after 2 years the K-1 keeps on surprising me with its low light capabilities. The amount of detail you can pull out of the shadows is just amazing.

Had lovely spring weather in Helsinki today. Spent the whole afternoon skiing on the frozen sea off the coastline.
Bright sunshine on an open icefield creates extreme contrasts. The dynamic range of the K-1 passed the test with flying colours!

Flashes safe to use with Pentax KM (SLR similar to K1000)

I also have a KM. Bought this one new in the 70īs, and it still works. Over the years I have used various flashes with it. Mostly Metzes, but also other brands. Never had any problems with it. I suspect if there was something unusual with the camera I would have heard about it. The Pentax flash should definitely be safe to use with the KM.

On a trip like this I usually work with two bodies. Things happen fast and you do not allways have time to change lenses. Sometimes it is just too dusty for doing this. It is also good to have back up. With only one body an occasional fault would ruin the trip.
