Highlight protection basically underexposes your pictures by a stop and then pull it back up in post to save highlight. IMO, 1 stop is way too much - considering the K-5 does a decent job at saving highlight by itself. I generally turns this off and dial EV back 1/3 stop.
Shadow boosting only applies to JPEG so I never use it.

Use Adobe Lightroom to organise and post process your photos. Photoshop is only for very advanced processing / use of plugins. Otherwise Adobe Lightroom is more than enough.
It also support uploading to Facebook, Flickr and SmugMug.

Is there a Canon EF to Pentax adapter? AFAIK, the flange focal distance of Pentax is longer than Canon so it will involve correction optics which degrade quality (quite significantly).
About sports it really depends on what kind of sports. The traditional FF sport lens of 70-200 f2.8 can be found on Pentax with Sigma 50-150 f2.8 and Pentax 50-135 f2.8. The former is within your price range, the latter is not.

Sigma 30mm f1.4. Its f1.4 is good enough for casual portraits. It's 45mm equivalent which is more normal than the 35mm so better for landscape. The only thing that it can't do is macro and wide angle (by nature, a normal lens is not a wide angle lens).
I would suggest you to sell the 35mm f2.4 and/or the 35mm 2.8 and/or the 40mm (presumably Ltd?). You only need 1 lens in those 3. And use the cash to buy a longer portrait lens like 85mm or 70mm or even Tamron 90mm macro which can also serve as a very good portrait lens.
And to be 100% honest. You DO NOT need another lens. The 17-70 is good enough for landscape and portrait with very good IQ.

Firstly, it's normal for retailers to sell cheaper than list prices.
However, fake Hoya filters are very common as well. Do you mind sharing the cheap sellers and the official outlets you are referring to?
I am in no way suggesting that cheap filters are fake. But if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Yes, it is abnormal. Mine locks fine. In fact, I hardly ever move out of User mode. :lol: All 5 user modes are sufficient.

Went on a 900 pics session and The batt indicator says 2/3 full. So I reckon 2k/charge is a reasonable expectation. No flash use though but still, I came from MFT with 300/charge.

Use Adobe Lightroom and create a preset which does things automatically. I can process 800 pictures in a few seconds (literally just several clicks).

Focusing has nothing to do with the pop up flash. I think you are confusing the K-5 with some Canon DSLR which uses flash strobes to assist focus (which I personally find very annoying because people see the flash and think the picture has already been taken). The K-5 focus assist lamp is not the pop up flash but a green light.
And I also found auto pop up flash very annoying because it's me who should decide when to use the flash, not the camera which only has generic fixed rules.

I know this may be panned after the photozone report but I think the best hiking K-5 combo is the 18-135mm. It's weather-resistance, very good coverage, relatively compact and light weight. The only con is the price (or unless you are trying to sell your cross-country trip photos).

The higher you go, the more noise you get, that's not unusual.
I'll go direct. My best strategy:- Use Adobe Lightroom, create presets to reduce noise for anything beyond ISO 1600.
- Expose to the right (i.e. do not underexpose), if need to save highlight then use the Highlight correction functionality of the camera.
- Turn on NR, it helps keep shutter speed low so that ISO is kept low as well.
- Do not pixel peep at 100% unless necessary.

Shadow correction is not applied to RAW.
Highlight correction affects RAW.
I chose my words carefully.
What HC does is that it underexposes by 1 EV and then push the image up by 1 EV. That is why your minimum ISO becomes 160/200 when you have HC turned on. E.g. correct exposure: 1/60s, f8.0 ISO 80 under HC will be 1/120s f8.0 ISO 80 and then the camera will apply digital sensitivity boost the exposure up 1 stop (and thus ISO is now equivalent to 160).
The effect is the same as if you purposely take all images at -1EV compensation and then push the exposure up in post. So the RAW file is still the RAW file but it is underexposed.
I have HC on all the time (unless I'm taking slow shutter speed landscape) but SC off. Reason: I tend to underexpose to save highlight all the time anyway so why not just try to get correct exposure and let the camera does the highlight saving. SC is does not affect RAW so keep it off.
Taking pictures: RAW (either PEF or DNG is fine) to prevent wasting sensor data
Sharing pictures: JPEG (sRGB, not AdobeRGB color profile)
Editing pictures: TIFF or PSD
Don't bother with anything else.

It's not that the buffer gets smaller. It's because the RAW file gets bigger, I think. The ISO 80 RAW is around 20MB, ISO 12800 RAW is like 30MB+.

Do you do RAW or JPEG? If you want high ISO and are really that concious about making noise removal easy, why not just use RAW (in which case sharpen setting on camera is irrlevant).

Someone suggested me to buy the Sigma 50-150 f2.8 instead of the DA* 50-135. Does any one have any experience with the Sigma lens? What are the common problems with the lens?
It sadly has been discontinued with no prospective replacement shown on Sigma website. I found that a little worrying. Maybe something critically wrong with it that they don't want to make it any more?
I'm very carefully considering all options for a portrait lens. So far the "war" is between the DA* 50-135 and 70 LTD + FA50/DFA100WR combo. The latter has weight advantage and the former has range advantage.
And now the Sigma also.
Any help/info/comment is greatly appreciated.

For every photo session, I always try to use only 1 lens (unless if it rains then the WR kit comes to the rescue). It's just a nice bonding experience (which helps with my LBA). It's even nicer with the 35mm limited whose versatility is just wonderful.
