Is it normal for needing 50-135 lens repaired twice?

Thanks for the link! I watched a youtube video earlier with instructions. However, my husband thinks for what little is charged to do it I should just send it away. I'm torn. I have an event coming up soonish that I'd love to have it for so I'm not sure what I will do.

Thanks for the info. After reading responses and looking into the post that was linked above about sending out to have it made screw drive, I"m going to go ahead and do that. For what he charges if it's too loud for the very rare times I shoot a wedding, I'll just rent a lens for the weekend.

Thanks for your input! I have been looking into the screw drive option since Steve posted about it. And I am definitely interested, however I"m concerned with the noise. I don't shoot a lot of weddings but occasionally will and I"m afraid it will be too loud to use during a wedding ceremony. Any thoughts on that?

Thank you for the explanation! I'm very interested in having it converted to screw drive, however am concerned about the noise. As I posted in response above, I occasionally shoot weddings, not often, but every once in a while. Is the lens to loud to use during a wedding ceremony?

To be honest with you I don't know what that means. Can you explain to me?

So I have a few questions.... I bought the SMC-DA 50-135 lens back in 2011. In 2014 it would not focus at all in AF so I sent it to Precision for repair. Worked fine until this summer and now it won't Auto Focus again. Sent it back to Precision and to repair this time they quoted me at $526. Looked on Amazon and new they are selling for $700. My first thought is just to buy a new one However, what are the chances the new one will have to be repaired too? Has Pentax done anything different with more recently manufactured lenses to keep them from having this problem? Am I better off with a new lens and chance it having issues at some point? Or better off with a lens that has been repaired (twice) ?

I wasn't using multiple focus points. I 99% of the time only use the center focus point.

Finally took my camera in for a cleaning. This is all that was included in the service the camera shop did....

"*Our Professional 7-Point Sensor Cleaning Includes.
Complete external camera and lens cleaning (One attached lens included)
Focusing screen cleaning
Mirror and mirror box cleaning
Sensor cleaning
Auto focus check
Proper exposure check

So, as I got home my goof ball son was just leaving... so as we were passing I took a few really quick shots of him to test the camera out. I uploaded the non cropped photo and then a crop of the focus area. here is the link.... I commented on the one photo that seemed to front focus (On his hand... you can see it in the crop) all others look pretty good.

K3 ii test shots | Flickr

so, this afternoon I have a High School Senior photo shoot scheduled. Do I trust it enough to use my K3 for it? Or go back to my old faithful K5?

This is all that was included when I had my camera serviced...

"*Our Professional 7-Point Sensor Cleaning Includes.
Complete external camera and lens cleaning (One attached lens included)
Focusing screen cleaning
Mirror and mirror box cleaning
Sensor cleaning
Auto focus check
Proper exposure check
Guaranteed next business day service for walk-ins or UPS Ground shipping for online orders"

So, I assume "Focusing screen cleaning" is what you are referring to when you say autofocus sensor? Or am I wrong?

I quickly fired off a few shots when I got it home, right before my son left for football practice, so it literally was the 2 of us passing at the front door and me snapping a few shots of him. they are all tack sharp. However, I've seemed to always get very sharp test shots when taking it out to check focus, but when using it in a shoot, I seem to get far to many back focused, front focused and not focused shots. So, tomorrow I have a High School Senior photo shoot and I'm torn between using the K3ii and seeing how it performs or sticking to my K5 which has been my go to camera since I've noticed the focus issues on the 3.

My K5 is going in next for a cleaning, so I'm leaning towards putting my K3 to the test at my shoots coming up.

Just picked my K3ii up from the camera shop where I had the sensor cleaned. It's my first time having a camera cleaned. I've had it 3 years and I've posted about some focus inconsistency and many recommended I start with a cleaning. anyway, the lady at camera shop said they recommend a cleaning once a year. She has hers cleaned 4 or 5 times a year!! I am such a slacker!! So, the K 3ii is done, now i want to take the K5 in. and I"m going to try to get them in once a year for a good cleaning. Curious if you all take your cameras somewhere or clean them and how often.

I'm not crazy! I swear!! After work, I'm going to see if I can post some of the ones that are back focused. Honestly, I have plenty, it shouldn't be hard to find a couple.

Okay, so it's time like this where I feel like I must be crazy. I took the camera out and shot specific (boring) items in my yard, that had something either in the foreground or background that was well lit and had some contrast, so tried to give the camera every opportunity to back focus or front focus. It performed fine. I must be crazy. Some examples....

Flash advice needed.

I am going to give my 2 cents here for what it's worth. Since you say it's a favor to the couple and just doing it as a gift AND you say they actually hired a photographer, I say go for it! Use it as a learning experience. And you have a good chunk of time to prepare. All you really need to do is get that one photo that totally WOWS your friend..... wedding gift is taken care of. But, I love doing weddings, so that's just my opinion.

I use a Metz Flash on camera, I'm not super thrilled with it however, so if I book another wedding this year (I usually do just a couple a year and I've already one 2) ( I also have a cheaper manual flash I use on a light stand and fire it wirelessly during some receptions) I think I am going to look for something different to use as my on camera flash. So I will be following this thread closely.
