Pentax MX-1 two weeks impression and many samples!

You can do this by just pressing the playback button for a little while when the camera is turned off. This way the lens won't extend and you can review your pictures.

This is a very nice review, by the way. I also love my MX-1 very much. Good to see there are other enthusiast users of this great little camera.

How many K-30 owners do we have?

I sold 1 of my 2 K-01's to buy a K-30 at the current closeout sale. I also sold my Samsung GX-10 (Pentax K10d clone).

This way I still have 2 Pentax-K bodies and have the convenience of a compact powerhouse (K-01 + 40mm XS) and also a versatile, Weather resistant DSLR with viewfinder (K-30). So far I really love my current, all Pentax setup:

Some pictures of my $ 15.99 Ebay case (@ low light tonight):

I guess the frequent sliding in and out of this case will help acquiring the nice natural 'brassed' look on my MX-1 :) .

I personally don't like the (n)ever ready cases. They look very nice, but where do you keep the cover when you want to use the camera? The half case also blocks the battery/ SD card cover, so you have to take it off very often. I found a very nice case including a shoulder strap for the case and matching wrist strap for the camera once you take it out:

I ordered mine for only $ 15.99 over here: New Camera Case Bag Pouch Forpentax MX 1 MX1 Coffee Leather Dark Brown | eBay

I received it today after 2 weeks shipping time and it looks fantastic.

K-01 & MC Zenitar K2

OK, now you just caused me spending 50 bucks on some Russian plastic, while I already have the M 50mm 1.7... This Zenitar just looks awesome on the K-01, I couldn't resist it anymore.

I also ordered mine from eBay/moscowphoto and saw the 2 versions (plastic jar and velvet bag). I also decided for the plastic jar version, because the lens was probably better protected this way from humidity during all those years on the shelf. The manual pictured on the eBay offer also looked slightly newer than the one with the 'velvet bag' version.

I found the ideal strap for the K-01

I decided to order the black seatbelt strap. I'm a car guy, and I like the look and feel of a seatbelt. I also think it feels easier and softer than the other straps offered.

I have the Black K-01 as well as the silver one. I use one for my daily AF lenses, the other one is set up for using my MF legacy lenses right away. Now my black K-01 will have the black seatbelt neck strap and the silver one keeps the wrist strap. This way I can decide which one is most handy for the occasion.

Today my silver K-01 arrived. It looks great with the K 24mm f/2.8:

Nice compact combo to take with me: K-01 black with the 40mm XS and K-01 Silver with K 24mm, both setup to use right away instead of changing lenses and adjusting settings for full manual use:

I ordered a second K-01 this week, I already had a black one with the 40mm XS. Now I'll recieve the silver one as well. I intend to use the black one for everyday use with AF lenses and set up the silver one to use with my manual Pentax lenses. So I have one ready for point and shoot and the other for special occasions. At this price level: Get them while you still can!

I paid € 15,- for it in The Netherlands, I still like it a lot, but I use it with a better, wider neck strap which I already had.

Yesterday I also ordered a Herringbone Papa's pocket mini on Ebay, it seems fine for the K-01 with my large Sigma 18-50mm HSM/OS lens.

I use the Vanguard Biin 8h as a nice small bag for my K-01 + 40mm XS lens. It's my compact grab everyday, take anywhere bag. The K-01/40mm combo fits very nicely and not too tight.

K-01 + 40mm XS: break in period?

Thanks for the quick replies.

Unfortunately I didn't have much time to use my new camera yet. I only took pictures in and around the house. This time of the year the light is quite dim, so only high ISO pictures are possible to get decent shutter speed. I notice that I need shutter speeds of 1/80 and faster to get sharp pictures, with moving subjects even faster (+ 1/125).

SR seems a lot less effective as I was used to before with my former K-x, but that is probably because of the fact I'm holding the K-01 loose in my hands, while my K-x was stabilized because of holding it with the viewfinder to my eye.

All learning curve with a new toy I guess... :)

To be certain: I read a review of the K-01 where the reviewer needed several copies of the K-01 before he got a decent one. After getting a good one he was very positive about the K01. How is the sample variation in real life and how can I determine that I received a good one right away?

K-01 + 40mm XS: break in period?

After selling of my Pentax K100D Super and K-x bodies I switched to the Samsung NX System some time ago. Fortunately I kept al my Pentax MF lenses. I'm still an enthusiast Samsung NX user and I really like my NX10 and several NX lenses.

Using my Pentax MF lenses turned out not very satisfying to me with the NX, as well as the disappointing hight ISO performance. The recent price drop of the K-01 caused me ordering this new Pentax along with the 40mm XS prime. The 18-55mm WR was also very cheap ( 75,- in The Netherlands) so I got this as well.

First experience with the K-01 was kind of disappointing. Despite upgrading to the most recent FW I wasn't getting very sharp images from both lenses in lots of pictures. Now, after approx. 250 images shot with the K-01, I'm getting the sharpness I was hoping for in most pictures. It seems that the camera and/ or lens needed some time to settle and break in like you read about cars and hi-fi speakers.

Am I wrong or is this normal?

After seeing those nicely worn and brassed cameras I'm almost ashamed to show my 2 Pentax film bodies.

Unfortunatly the ones I won on Ebay this month turned out to be in a mint condition. So they need a lot of use by me to look just as nice.

Thanks for the reply, MRRiley,

Besides my M-series lenses (28mm3.5/50mm1.7/135mm3.5) I also have some AF lenses I didn't mention in my opening post:

-SMC Pentax-F 28mm f/2.8
-SMC Pentax-F 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5

-SMC Pentax-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited

-SMC Pentax-FA 50mm f/1.4

-Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5

Flash unit: Pentax AF360FGZ

And 2 compact backup cameras:

-Ricoh GX200 -Great versatile camera, took all the pictures in my first post, unfortunately not usable above ISO 200

-Fuji F70EXR, a nice compact camera with decent low light capabilities.

That's about it.

Ok, here's my introduction on this Pentax Forum.

I've been reading lots of posts during the last few years over here but I never registered. I'm already posting on Dutch Pentax forums and on the dpreview.com forums for quite a long time so I didn't take the effort of registering over here up until now...

I am a Pentax user since 2008 when I bought my first DSLR, a K100D Super. Before that I was using advanced compact cameras like the Canon Powershot G3.

I'm enjoying digital photography since 2003 when I bought this Canon.

After buying the K100D things really started off. Since then I acquired some nice lenses; both AF and manual ones. Last year I replaced Tthe K100D for my current K-x.

After collecting some nice M-series manual lenses I started craving for a classic Pentax film SLR. This is where pentaxforums.com became really interesting to me. There are a lot of very helpful topics on film SLRs over here.

After a lot of reading I bought a mint condition ME Super, Program A and ME II winder.

So far I really enjoy 'old school' photography like this , especially the results of taking photographs of my 2 precious little ladies are very pleasing to me:

Beside these old cameras I still enjoy my K-x off course and I will also contribute in the digital section of this forums.

Nice to meet you all!
