Pentax LX Focus Calibration Issues

I just did a very simple test which I'm astounded I did not do before... I put the camera to my eye with my (in this case) 31/1.8 focused to infinity. Guess what, it was all out of focus! Not completely bokeh'd out but unsharp. I then put a little pressure on the GG and checked again, sharp. So I think that the seating of the GG is a bit shaky or loose. I wonder if I should try and DIY a fix or just send it in for repair... The screen is for fast lenses and I'd like to be confident that I can focus wide open and nail shots, which shouldn't be asking for much since the Limiteds are really not 'that' fast.

Pentax LX Focus Calibration Issues

I am seeing an unreasonable number of out of focus shots on my LX. I recently installed an SA-23 which I am using with my 43mm 1.9, and even when I focus carefully It seems that I am off when I finally see the film.

Do these fall out of calibration easily?

The FA Limited Development Story (also a little DA Limited)

What a great post! I've sold my K-1 II recently, but not my MZ-S, LX, 43mm, and 31mm. So I've been enjoying shooting my two FA Limiteds on film. Man they really sing in a way I never felt they did on the K-1. I can shoot even the 43 wide open and never want for more sharpness or detail. The bokeh is perfect, and the contrast is just right. Similarly the 31 has a color rendering that reminds me of the Zeiss classic (PK/ZF) lenses I used to enjoy so much. Luckily the FA Limiteds don't have Zeiss price tags!

Here is my submission. I shot this in the preserve behind my house with a Pentax MZ-S and the 31mm 1.8 FA Limited. This really shows off what that lens can do. The film was Portra 400 and it was scanned using a Fuji Frontier.

Ok I'm willing to part the K-1 II kit out.

I'll sell the camera in the box for $1100, this will include 2x batteries.

If there is interest in the battery grip or AC adapter make me an offer.

The lens is still available, and I will wave the paypal fee.

I will continue to shoot with my Pentax LX and MZ-S. I have some FA Limiteds that I love. My new scanning rig uses a Panasonic S1R, and the Sigma 70mm ART macro. It's a bit better suited to the task.

When firing off a number of frames at a time in single capture mode, often times the K1 II I have will flip it's mirror up and it will stay there. I have to either reset the camera or hit LV to get the mirror down again.

It's a minor annoyance but it happens a lot. Any fix?

All my current glass is screw drive. I know I gotta upgrade at some point but Ricoh is a bit slow to release new primes I'm super interested in. I think people buy Pentax because they like 'different.' I wish Pentax would stick to that ethos and either re-house or modernize the concept of the 31/43/77. I love the old ones because they work so well on my LX and MZ-S. But a new 43/1.4 or 31/1.4 would be welcome if you ask me. You can get a good to great 50 or 28 for any system.

Re crop modes, on an individual level yes custom cropping after is fine. But expand to a full session where you may have hundreds of images, and you want to crop each one to 4:3. If you can't preview the crop in the VF with perfect precision, you can't just tell LR to do it in batch. The adjustment times take too long. If I know I will be using a specific aspect ratio when I'm shooting, it's so much faster to just do it in camera. If I had my druthers camera sensors would be square, so you could crop to any format without rotating the camera. Victor Hasselblad was right IMO.

K-2 Wishlist

I'm enjoying my K-1 II quite a lot, but after shooting some weddings with it this Summer I have some wishlist items for an upgrade should it ever come.

1) A proper dedicated AF point controller. When I have the camera to my eye, it's incredibly annoying to realize I'm just changing white balance instead of moving the focus points around.
1b) Focus selector on the battery grip!!!

2) Complete AF overhaul for FF. My D810 runs circles around Pentax AF in all situations. The K-1 is usable in good light but I have completely stopped using it during receptions or low light. But frankly, they need to do better. Wider area, and much more accurate. Maybe the problem is that I'm using screw drive lenses, but it's over due IMO. Seems like the next 645 could benefit from this too.

3) 16 shot pixel shift for super high res. I've posted about this before. Seems like maybe it's not possible on the current K-1 II? With Sony and Panasonic achieving amazing resolution, and full RGB capture with no debayering, it would be great to see that in a Pentax. I personally use pixel shift for film scans, and if I could get resolution into the 180+ range I wouldn't have to stitch as much or at all.

4) Get rid of the fluff. I don't need direct access to multiple color modes on the AF selector. Raw photos are raw photos. I personally don't need that in camera AT ALL, but if it must be there, why not be in the menu? Same with the filter modes, this is a pro camera. Get rid of em! What's with the outdoor view settings? I just want to be able to see my preview without having to change a brightness mode that seems to reset occasionally. Either implement an ambient light sensor or put it in the menu.

5) MOAR crop modes. Every camera is like this, especially mirrorless. I love that Pentax has a 1:1, but I'd also love to see 4:3 and 4:5 modes. No reason why a digital sensor shouldn't be able to crop in camera. It's mostly helpful for film scanning, but I like to shoot 4:3 vertical portraits at weddings too. That's roughly the same as 645 format, and I prefer the more cropped vertical to 2:3 which can often seem overlong at the top and bottom.

I really like my Pentax, and I love the lenses. But as it is right now I'd be foolish to sell my D810, which is a rock solid workhorse when it comes to a wedding environment. I prefer using the K-1 when it comes to the images I get, but I can't rely on it in the same way. Hopefully we'll see some of this stuff addressed in a future K-2. I really couldn't care less about the newer sensors. I'm assuming it will have a 47mp chip, sounds great for scanning, but IMO we're beyond the needs of most photographers even at 36.

P.S. I don't see any reason why Pentax shouldn't rehouse the Limited FF primes in an SDM body. It would be a bit more interesting than playing me-too to Sigma's line up by way of Tokina.

Why Would The DC Adapter Just Stop Working?

My K-1 II is barely a few months old, and my DC Adapter was purchased new just a few weeks ago. Today when I tried to do some scanning the camera would not take power from the adapter. It does power on with batteries. I tried a different power cable and outlet. I tried a reset of the camera functions too...no dice. Seems like an odd thing to quit on me so early.

Of course the frustrating question is...camera or adapter? Is there anything I should try before requesting a replacement from B&H for the adapter?

Hoping for a Pixel Shift Upgrade...

So far there were two approaches to Pixel Shift from my understanding. One was the Pentax mode which we call know and love. It essentially uses pixel shift to get around the need for bayer demosaicing. You get the full possible image quality of the sensor. The other was the Olympus super res mode, which increased the pixel count. Given that 36mp is still a lot, I prefer the Pentax method.

I'm not sure if Pentax users noticed but two new Pixel Shift capable cameras have been released. The Sony A7R IV, and the Panasonic S1R. These models combine the Pentax and Olympus method to get around bayer demosiacing and increase resolution. I believe the Sony makes 8 captures, and promises 240mp.

Now I don't get too excited about MP increases for practical photography. However I primarily use pixel shift for scanning film, a task to which it is perfectly suited. When you go to formats like 1:1 you pay a significant resolution price with single capture scans. You get around this by taking multiple scans of the film in sections and stitching them together. 6 captures of a 6x6 negative yields close to 4000ppi. The super resolution mode that the Sony and Panasonic may reduce any need for stitching, which is time consuming and can be challenging at times.

I guess I am just hoping that Pentax can upgrade the Pixel Shift mode in a firmware update to offer more captures in pixel shift mode to increase resolution.

MZ-S AF Issue

Hi! Just received my MZ-S from KEH yesterday and I have been using it with my 43mm 1.9. Seems like a match made in heaven so far.

The only issue I've been noticing is that the AF seems resistant to picking infinity when focusing at distant subjects. More often than not I notice my infinity target looks a bit soft, and the lens has settled on the 8m marker. The AF system doesn't seem to have issues at other working distances. Up close, at least from the image in the VF, the focus appears sharp. Is this typical behavior or am I misusing the AF system in some way? I have the camera set most of the time to center point AF.

Thanks!

I too just started having this issue. Very strange.

The K-1 is a marvelous studio camera considering Pixel Shift. I wish tethering wasn't such an afterthought for them.

First engagement session with the K-1 II and the 43mm done! I was using a Hold Fast camera harness so I had the D810 with a 50/1.4G and the K-1 with the 43mm available to me on either shoulder.

I really love the images with the 43mm. The contrast and character of the old Limited lens really stands out. The 50/1.4 was obviously able to produce blur the background more and was a little better for tighter shots, but when I was working a middle distances with the 43 it really shined. I think I prefer the 43 to my usual 35 because it doesn't really distort the subjects in the same way, and I can be ever so slightly further from the subjects.

The Pentax definitely has preferable out of the camera color and contrast. It seemed so render a bit more low-key than the Nikon so it's somewhat of a difference between 'light and airy' and 'moody'. However I was shooting at dusk so my perspective is that the K-1 more accurately represented the feeling of the light at that time. YMMV with this because no-image-goes-unprocessed. Ultimately I will tweak these images so they have a consistent look, and I have often argued that out of the camera color is essentially a non-issue in the age of presets and profiles. Raw is raw. But the DNGs the Pentax created are very lovely raws.

The AF did not keep up with the Nikon. This is a surprise to absolutely no one! I would describe it as slightly better than I expected however. It was able to modestly track my subjects during walking shots, though this resulted in more out of focus images than my Nikon would when using AF-C 'Group' mode. On the Pentax I would use AF-C and the mode where about 9 boxes are highlighted, and move that target around as needed. The actual AF reach didn't bother me so much. The points were within compositional norms. I wish it was slightly better when my subjects were not moving however. It did not miss much, but it did from time to time and that was frustrating. My Nikon would never miss in those situations.

The 43mm is not a soft lens, but the AF misses will make you think it is. It's plenty sharp even at 1.9! Throw a modest amount of sharpening on there and it's razor sharp. Stop down to 2.5 or 2.8 and there is nothing holding you back.

I tried a hand held pixel shift on a landscape before my clients arrived. It works! I don't know why the reviews Poo-Poo this mode, as I see a significant increase in resolution, especially on distant objects in a landscape. However as I experienced with the HDR mode, the in camera processing slow down is egregious. So I won't try HDR again during a portrait session haha!

If you watch this segment you'll see a photographer featured who appears to be shooting with a 645Z. I have seen more than a few people shooting with Z's over the years. I think it was something of an understated hit. I hope they keep it up with future models and lenses.

Thanks all!

Yeah as much as I loved the K-5, I shoot A LOT of film. (Actually I own a film lab here in Maine called Northeast Photogrpahic). Crop cameras were just not going to work for me. When it seemed like Pentax was not going to embrace full frame I switched to Nikon, which was my first brand anyways. Nikon obviously makes some of the best cameras and lenses out there, but with a few exceptions they can be a little bit boring. I have an F6 which I LOVE, but nothing about the system is 'charming' so to speak. The Limited line up has 'use me appeal'. I hope Pentax can still embrace that design ethos, but even if they don't they already make everything I need.

Re Pixel Shift scanning, yes full pixel color readout is important when it comes to large large prints. It seems counter intuitive, but CMOS sensors do have some noise present even at low ISOs which really reveals itself when doing this kind of work. Every scan needs some post production work, and some sharpening, all of which can increase noise. A pixel shifted scan greatly improves my ability to fine tune a scan. CCD line scanners, Imacons...'normal' scanners all use full pixel readout to achieve their effective resolutions. In theory, the K-1 should be achieving full sensor resolution. This means you're meeting or exceeding a Coolscan 5000, or even Imacon. But to know for sure I have to do more tests.
