My condolences to Yvon's family. Rest in Peace Yvon. I didn't know him well, but I have a couple of his ebooks which helped me out quite a bit.

Thanks and it really isn't too difficult, and I've had it in my list for more than a year now. As bertwert said your astrotracer isn't needed.

I did three minute exposures on Bulb mode. The K1's internal intervalometer is disabled when in Bulb mode, so I got a flashpoint intervalometer last week so I could finally try this out -- product links below. I wish they would enable the intervalomter on the K1 in bulb mode, seems like a pretty easy firmware update possibility.

These are what I see as the main things to get the star trails. by no means am i an expert, but these are what I spent my time on for this shot.
  • nice sturdy tripod

  • getting exposure/composition...take test shots to start with to make sure the exposure will be adequate and you have the desired composition. I didn't add any exposure in post. I dinked around with contrast/highlights/clarity I think you can go further with it, but I didn't want it too baked.

  • stacking the images -- photoshop or some other software -- Its really a pretty simple process. Watch this guy on youtube he explains the process and makes it really straight forward.

    You Tube

As with anything you play around with it a bit to suit your taste.

The next hurdle for me is to do the trails with an interesting subject some additional images with light painting on an interesting foreground subject.

intervalometer about $40

cable to hook the intervalometer to the K1, K3, K5 and others.

This was a test and I've been thinking about this for quite some time...a lot more than it took to execute. 31 3 minute exposures stacked in photoshop. The cars driving by painted the foreground for me. The planes, well it added some element, but not sure if it is bad or good.:) Now that I have this under my belt, I need to find some real foreground interest and do some light painting and pick a time and location with less air traffic.

thanks, russell

Given the volume of posts i make, I doubt I'll make it into the ring. Great contest nonetheless!

Given the lack of free time i have, three boys that keep me an the boss extremely busy, i typically try to spend any free time behind the lens.

Good luck everyone!

I've used the DFA100 for portrait and landscape, but this is my first real experience with macro work. As a whole the set was a little soft due to my lack of experience in the depth of field when in macro mode, but I had fun.

DFA100 on a K-1ii / handlheld yongnuo flash with trigger on camera. Just winter sticker weeds in the yard the flower was about nickel sized.

Pretty happy with my copy of the 24-70. Plenty of options when I have it on.

Portrait use for D FA 100 on K-1ii. I'll be adding this to my bag for portraits. I was really happy with the results it gives in this mode.

Nice shots! What camera/lens combo are you using?

I normally use the K3ii and DA 50 1.8, but this season I have the K-1ii and gave the DFA 24-70 a try and was pleasantly surprised. I especially like I can use the shorter end of the focal length to get things like the last one. I haven't compared, but pretty sure my keeper rate has gone up considerably. Not sure if it is the K-1ii or the 24-70 or maybe both.

Chance of rain for this week's game was 80%, but we avoided it except for a few small sprinkles.

Yeah, I get asked often after a game what I thought about it. I rarely have my eyes off the camera during plays with the thought I might miss a shot. At best you can see how big the holes are for the running backs.

I have not shot sports in the rain before, but I know the photos are getting a lot of attention from players, parents, studetns etc. on flickr. Most likely due to the added rain element. It was fun looking through them afterward, but I'd be lying if I said I look forward to shooting in the rain again. :) It still makes me a bit nervous.

x-posted from sports photography. pre game, sideline, half time and post game are a great time to incorporate some UW into the set. It was raining for 3 of the 4 quarters in this game and it was my first real experience using AW/WR in the extremes. Usually I put my gear away, but I finally worked up the guts to try it. The gear performed flawlessly and is still working fine.

I've been using Pentax AW and WR gear for some time now. I finally had the guts to try it out the past Friday. It rained for 3 of the 4 quarters in this game and at times pretty hard. I was really nervous, but everything worked well and so far there doesn't seem to be any moisture intrusion. I did let my gear ride open air in the back seats of the car for the 2.5 hour drive home and then at home for the next day and half.

Quantity of light was decent, but I have been at better venues. The quality of the light was above average for high school football. This is my first season with the K-1 and its exactly what I wanted compared to the K-3. I can shoot is at 6400 and even 12800 and the noise levels are more than acceptable for these types of photos. I believe all the below were shot at 6400.

Other than gear, I've also changed my technique to using manual mode. Usually exposing for between the shadows and highlights, but sometimes leaning to one direction or the other if i want to take advantage of a light differential. It has more than cut my post processing effort in half and I can apply the same adjustments across the board.

the DA*300 has nonoticeable chromatic aberration as does the DA*200, that's nice to not have toadjust.

Something a little different. X-posted from the Sports Photography thread. In the past I've mostly concentrated on tele shots at the outdoor sports field venues. I'm looking forward to incorporating the wide shots this season.

Its been quite some time since I've posted, lots of summer and school activities and work or course. Its wearing me out.

I have a new setup this year moving from the K-3ii/DA*200 to the K-1ii/DA*300/DA*200 and K-1/DFA15-30. I'm liking it so far. The focusing on this setup took a bit of getting used to and not sure if it is the lens or camera difference. Result once getting used to it is a good keeper rate. I love this time of football season that you aren't constrained by stadium lighting. Also like the golden color the setting sun adds.

I like the giant ref and how all the other refs heads are aimed up to look at him...he was probably 6'7" or so. I also like the bearded coach pic it was probably my favorite of the set.

Grand Canyon portraits...how can you go wrong? If i get a bad shot with this lens it is definitely user error.

I was happy when we arrived find the gym with nice lighting both quantity and quality. These are taken with the DA*200 on a K-1. I just started this combination for pre-game, half-time and crowd shots -- fun stuff!

btw My setup for the in game action is the DA50 1.8 on the K-3ii or K-5iis -- which works out pretty well. I learned late in this season to disable SR. I try to shoot at least 1/500, so it isn't needed anyway. I think I've been taking shots while SR was still trying to stabilize. Pretty sure when this is the case the pictures are a little soft. I think I've noticed better sharpness since disabling SR for in game shots, but will need to wait until next football/basketball season now to see. The below were with SR on and they seem a little soft, so looking forward to another action outing to try this out.
