I picked up this OM-10 kit at what I think was a great price. $60 shipped. Everything seen here including bag. It will be a gift for my daughter-in-law who is a photographer. She uses an Olympus DSLR and is brand loyal and wants to try film.

Nope; a short flange distance mirrorless mount, by definition, will not be K-mount.

The EOS mount is still going strong at 33 years of age, and my understanding is their new mount is more of a technical evolution than revolution with full compatibility for now with an adaptor. In all that time, I never heard of any big problems with the lens mount part of the EOS system. It seems pretty reliable. I'm sure it's been updated with every new lens release too.
I don't see why this emulation of the K mount won't carry the brand well into the future, presuming there is a future.

OTOH this is likely the last evolution of the K-mount.
They can change focus motors, update communication protocols to some extent, even adding in-lens stabilisation; but there should be no need for a KAF 5

For the Asahi Optical of the mid-70s, backward compatibility meant that older, M42 mount Takumar lenses could still be used with newer K-mount cameras. Not the other way around.

Same with the lenses without aperture ring (can't be used on older cameras), with the KAF3 lenses, now the KAF4 lenses.

On the other hand, one can still use one's Asahi Kogaku Takumar 50mm f/3.5 from 1952 on one's K-1 Mark II from 2018 the way one used it on one's Asahiflex in 1952, with a few added benefits such as eye-level viewfinder, instant return mirror, TTL exposure metering and more. ;)

I guess for me it's what you are used to, as my original SLR was a chrome KX with black K Series lenses.

30 + years later I got my first black K Series body (K2) and my K Series lenses looked good on that black body as well. Then I got my first silver FA LTD and it looked OK on my chrome KX, but a bit strange my black K2.

Even my wife made a comment on what kind on lens is "that" (FA43/1.9)?

Phil.

Yeah, what's the last k-mount camera that doesn't support this lens, the K-5II and IIs? From 2012? I've got one and I'm not mad about this in the least. Nearly a decade since that camera came out, and by the time this lens hits shelves in attainable numbers, it will be even closer to a decade old.

If you can really justify the purchase price of this lens, it shouldn't be that hard to find the money for a body that supports it, especially if buying used.

I would not accept apremium lens that doesnt sport the top line KAF4 mount. I am quite relaxed in the way that I expect Ricoh to share my view 100%.

So a premium lens shouldn't have what Pentax considers the premium aperture system?:o

Again, debating uses as a “creative tool”, definitions are important, or perhaps the field of creativity. The present fashion for having ultra-high definition, sharp to the corners photos in the commercial world, along with the smooth transition areas etc has probably influenced the design decisions for this new lens. Certainly, the bulk of this one is in line with that of the D FA*50, which possesses those qualities.

My 43 is feeling a little neglected, but I’m sure it knows my attention will return to normal at some time.:)

I think the new DFA* sounds like an excellent addition to the portfolio.

Even as owner of both the Sigma 85/1.4 and the 77mm princess I feel tempted. :)

And honestly the 77mm is a pancake. That alone outperforms all other portrait lenses. A lens you leave at home has the worst possible image quality: The images all come out black.

Wow, you guys are weird :)

I actually really like being able to mount new stuff on the old stuff...

DA40XS on the ZX-L? Sure. It's awesome.

F70-210 on the K1000? better than the old 80-200 with separated elements...
I'm wondering how good the new 70-210 f4 is wide open and whether it will manual focus without power just for this reason...

And I'd love love love to have a 31 LTD to go with my KX/MX... heck, any of the FA limiteds would be great on that pair...

SMC Takumar on the H1a? yes, please...

-Eric

We are all weird :)
I love seeing and using old lenses on DSLR or later gen film bodies, but I don't like to see A lenses or newer in older bodies despite knowing that they also work.
Yup, we are a bunch of weirdos! :)

Thanks,

I took these to answer a query on the UK forum but thought I would post it here too. I'm a bit of a sucker for having the right period accessories to go with my cameras when I am using them!

I wouldn't call that being a sucker...it's being a good collector. In my case it's OCD...when I see a KX with an A lens it bugs me. I have a large Exakta collection and I try to match all accessories to what was available. I even buy old Popular Photography mags from the 50s to get it right...God forbid I put a semi-auto lens and a 1953 body.

This is nothing new right? I'd argue that all lenses without aperture ring could already not be used on a lot of older cameras. Lenses are not always backwards compatible, but cameras are, and pentax keeps doing that. That way we can keep using our (sometimes large) collection of pentax glass, while occasionally updating the camera. Updating a camera once every very many years is a much more financially feasible solution to users than having to change all lenses by changing the mount completely.

Speaking of Kimio Tanaka, he provided (op. cit.) a comparison between the mock-up showcased at CP+ 2019 (left) and the prototype that should have been showcased at CP+ 2020 (right).

Note the slight difference in the lens hood.
