Can I run the Pentax AF-540 Flash in wireless optical slave mode ?

Hi,

I want to use my AF-540 flash in wireless mode (as slave), but trigger it from another flash, the Canon 580 II.

It works great with my built-in flash of my K200D, but doesn't respond to the Canon, even though they are both set to M (so no TTL conflicts should exist) and to the same channel.

I'm not sure, but shouldn't my AF540 fire whenever it sees another flash (like all these cheap "stupid" optical-triggers on ebay) ?
I know he can do even better (P-TTL), but why can't it also just run as a basic optically triggered flash ?

Am I missing something?

Thanks

No new and real competitors for Pentax K-7?

I highly doubt that Pentax will have the K-7 replacement by the end of the year (2009), when the Canikon replacements will be out......

Of course, I agree.
However ogl thinks that there will be no new and real competitors for the K-7, while this is highly not true as the competitors from Canikon will be out within just a few months, and you have to agree with me that Pentax won't have a K-8 announcement within the upcoming months, or even the upcoming YEAR for that matter.

Nikon D400 / Canon 60D.

The K-7 is a great camera, and CURRENTLY it's the absolute best in its class - but you can come back to reality and stop living-a-lie. Canon and Nikon WILL have a decent (probably better, but more expensive) competitors to the K-7, within the upcoming year.

(I wonder who will be the first moron who'll tell me to stop "bashing" Pentax)

So... to sum this thread up - there is nothing better than Tamron for the 24-70 (or 28-75) focal length, in terms or build quality (considering the IQ is just fine) ? :(

Looks like a nice lens...

IQ is great:

QuoteQuote:

Let’s start with the praises because the Sigma certainly deserves them. The maximum relative aperture is fully useful at all focal lengths and gives us images definitely sharp. The weakest results we get at 70 mm but even there the 34 lpmm value can be considered as good. The frame center picture quality is beyond reproach, especially that, on stopping down by one stop, we get a brilliant 40 lpmm level or better at every focal length! At shorter focal lengths by f/4 – f/5.6 the results are on the 44-45 lpmm level – even good “primes” would be proud of them.

Can we find any fault in the Sigma? Perhaps it’s not a fault but it’s worth notice that the Sigma is slightly worse than the Nikkor and the Zeiss. The second lens is a class of its own because the results of over 40 lpmm were optained even at maximum aperture. Nikkor was a tad worse than Zeiss but still better than Sigma. The Sigma was definitely better than the oldest of them all, the Canon 24-70 mm, for a change. Even if we take into account the fact, that the Canon was tested on a matrix the least densely packed with pixels, so we would have to increase its MTF 50 values by 10%, the results are still worse at all focal lengths. Do not forget that the Sigma is the cheapest, the smallest and the lightest lens of all compared here so it deserves a round of applause. Looking at the real images you can hardly notice any difference between this lens and the Nikkor or the Zeiss – if you do notice it, it will be only at maximum aperture.

AF speed is also great, fast and silent:

However, AF accuracy.....

I wonder how it will perform under Pentax, especially the K-7..

Why not?
I tend to believe that bigger filter size (actually, bigger front element) can "catch" more light in a given time...

What do you think about the FA * 28-75 ?
Should I consider it in terms of IQ against the Tamron 28-75 ?
What about its AF speed?

I've heard some complains about the Sigma's HSM (based on other lenses), that said it misfocus a lot... not very nice.

While waiting for some reviews about this lens - is there any other lens that can mach canon 24-70L, IQ wise and also AF-Speed and BUILT QUALITY wise ?
24-70mm is my prefered focal range, along with F/2.8 aperture.

Thanks

Who cares?
This pixel-peeping is getting even more ridiculous with video, eh?
You are recording and watching VIDEO.
Who cares about some purple pixels that are absolutely NOT VISIBLE in the video playback (in 100% size!) and can only be found if you capture one frame and then zoom in to a ridiculous 400% size?!

Did you find any review / user-review on the NEW sigma 24-70 HSM ?
I couldn't find anything except for press-release pages and some talks about it, but never a review from someone who actually have it..

Thank you for this thread, I actually found it on the search while looking for a better lens than my current Tamron 28-75 for wedding photography, that will beat or at least match the Canon 24-70L.

Exactly.
I have the Tamron 28-75 and no doubt it is a fine lens optically.
However, the build-quality of the 24-70L is so much better! It is built like a tank, and looks so good (please don't kill me for loving big lenses, that are made by Canikon) that it makes my Tammy look like a toy..

Thanks for the heads up about the new Sigma 24-70 HSM, never heard about it before (I own the Tammy for over a year now).
According to its filter size (82mm) it looks promising (I don't like these tiny 67mm lenses), I'll take a look on its specs/reviews right now.

Which Macro lens?

Is there any zoom-lens (not necessarily a telephoto, could be a wide-angel as well) that also support macro ?
I find it inconvenient to use a "Limited" fixed-focal lens..
I with there was a wide angle (around 10-20mm) lens with good macro capabilities, so I could also use it as a wide-lens..

Should we expect the BG4 the same day as the K-7 ?

This is simply plain stupid.
Even a slow and unpleasant AF is much better than having no AF at all... :hmm:

I find it very problematic to have shallow dof and then not being able to.. well.. focus.
This will make video capture of moving objects completely pointless.
