The New Pentax K-WOW

Up-to-date video. Every manufacturer is able to get decent 4K+ video today, even tiny action cameras. K-mount backwards compatibility is a big selling point for Pentax, but all these great lenses are vanishing from the market to be attached onto other cameras for video, and this is a shame. If Pentax doesn't up their game on video, it risks turning completely irrelevant, not being able to sustain enough volume to produce even photography-focused equipment for people who don't care about video, because this market is increasingly small.

It seems they're aiming at a "Leica" boutique strategy with exclusive/custom models and such, but considering they can't even sell outside Japan, this looks like a real quick path to irrelevance. The only reason I still own Pentax is because I already got a bunch of lenses, they lost their unique selling points (affordable, compact, WR, IBIS, compatibility w/ old lenses). Even Fuji has more WR lenses than Pentax now, specially primes. I don't understand why Pentax didn't WR the Limiteds when they updated the coatings.

They seem to understand this, considering what I saw about the K-3 III (first to support 4K, although cropped), but there's a lot of catching up to do still.

There's no technical reason to not offer video in detriment of photo. It's not like Leica, where they compromise video by using CCD sensors on purpose. Pentax uses the same Sony sensors used on multiple cameras, but seem to lack up-to-date hardware/software to process good quality video (even the 4K on K3-III is cropped, and it can't do 60fps). None of this has to impact ergonomics or anything else.

Looks like a rebranded K70. Does it have any significant new feature? Good video? Anything?

Asking $800 on a camera with the same technology of 5 years ago, when the market is overflowing with used DSLRs after people move to Fuji, doesn’t make sense.

If this is a marketing strategy do get rid of old parts stock, I’m afraid Pentax will not survive, this is a “milking the cow” move.

Weekly Challenge Weekly Challenge #594 - Break the rules

Time to break the rules: show your creativity with unconventional composition, crops and/or aspect ratios!

Some ideas:

- Breaking the rule-of-thirds
- Landscapes in square or vertical aspect ratio
- Portraits in square or 16:9 ("cinematic") aspect ratio
- Landscapes w/ tele
- Portraits w/ wide angle or lots of headroom

Any subject and style of photography goes, as long it's out of the ordinary in terms of composition.

My examples:

The fine print:

Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

This challenge will run until midnight, November 13th 2022.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo.
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

The previous challenge was Weekly Challenge #593 - Clouds

New firmware, lens-specific custom image and features for K-1, K-1 II and K-3 III

The color filter availability based on the lens is an extremely dumb gimmick, but the idea of selling new features as firmware updates is an interesting one. That means even older bodies like K-1 will be kept supported, and you don’t need an entirely new body to benefit from software improvements. I like the idea of “unbundling” the camera hardware from the software.

To me, both the Helios 44 and 58 are magical.

helios 58\2 por r_risus, no Flickr (Credits to the original author)

Love the dreamy bokeh it produces, and at the same time are surprisingly sharp even wide open. There's also the curiosity factor, as those lenses are soviet knock-offs of Zeiss' designs.

I'm after those Helios myself, but haven't found a decent M42 adapter yet. Any recommendations?

Fine Tuning Pentax K30 for warmer AWB
Posted By hcarvalhoalves

That's my gripe with AWB: ideally, if the light source hasn't changed (e.g., sun), the camera shouldn't change the color temperature at all. In practice, the camera will change the temperature whether the subject is the sky, grass or a brick wall, even though everything is under sunlight (6500k).

Hence, when you fine tune, you're just offsetting the error instead of fixing, because AWB changes the base temperature all the time. Using AWB and trying to fix in post is also a pain, because each shot will have a different setting, so you can't adjust an entire set based on a sample shot of a grey subject or whatever, even if the variation is small (because an adjustment will make one shot perfect, but ruin the skin tones on another).

I prefer the camera to handle white balance like negative film did, having a consistent (rather than possibly right) temperature for an entire set, so you have latitude to work on post.

Rare photos of 19th century Brazilian slaves

These recently recovered photos were made between 1860 and 1885, about the time slavery got abolished in Brazil, and depict the soon-to-be-free slaves. The emperor (Dom Pedro II) was a photography enthusiast and sponsored some photographers to depict the daily life of the empire back then.

I'm posting here not only because of the oddity, but I've found the pictures are surprisingly good in terms of artistic and technical quality. It's also close to the heart, as it's my knowledge my grandfather was the first generation to be born not in slavery.

M42 Lens Combo/Collection Suggestions

I have a brand new Helios 44M-6 that is the sharpest 50mm I have, more than the Pentax-M 50mm f/1.4, although it has a tendency to flare (which may or may not be a problem). It's also a great lens with macro tubes due to it's sharpness:

I think it's more a matter of what you want to see: light rays thru a small window, or what the camera will capture. EVF is not to emulate a mirror, is to enable the later - I think that's what most people don't get about EVF.

I agree, backlit LCD/LED screens are awful. It's pitiful we have 300 DPI screens, but nothing close to human vision dynamic range.

Yep, it's a (cheap) M42-PK adapter.

Like elliott said, unscrew the little clip to avoid it getting jammed on your camera, then you can glue the adapter to the lens and voilla, you have a PK lens, easy to attach and remove.

Religion is the #1 problem on the planet

Since you mentioned meditation as one of the examples...

Please me correct if I'm mistaken. As I understand it, meditation, as defined by Buddhism, is the practice which culminates in increased awareness about the true nature of things. Buddha himself practiced it to exhaustion, became enlightened, and then the knowledge about the practice (meditation) was transmitted by oral/written tradition to disciples ever since.

I'm citing meditation and Buddhism here because when I wrote that sentence I was actually thinking about it.

Previously, when I said experience can't be transmitted, I wasn't talking about transmitting the knowledge on "how to meditate". I was talking about transmitting the experience that arises from meditation, which is intrinsically personal. In the case of Buddhism, the whole point is that Buddha can't transmit his enlightenment to others, only show the path (meditation). I believe you agree with me here.

When I said "I don't think experience has anything to do with religion at all", I was saying religion doesn't depend on experience because it perpetuates itself on tradition. For example, in Buddhism, what each individual passes forward is the practice of meditation, not the knowledge absorbed from the practice of meditation - not even the original Buddha did it, and that's the core of it all (you have to practice it yourself).

So I don't disagree when you say "a religious experience can be had through some inner technique, then that can passed along for others to try", although in my original example I was talking about experience as a noun (the experience), not the verb (to experience).

The problem isn't religion as much as it's people using it as their only moral compass. Otherwise, religion would just be a part of culture and tradition. Instead, it's used to bond some populations together or apart. Because the world is getting increasingly smaller and more connected, these people feel threatened, because being faced with the diversity means being more critical. It's a clash of culture.

Therefore the biggest problem in the world is ignorance.

If Pentax had a clue, they would've released a digital K1000 (full frame, roughly same size and VF) and called it a day. With all these great K-mount lenses floating around since day one it amazes me they went so deep on the DA line. Bonus points if they styled it like the old one, retro is a trend.

Instead they just throw their brand and legacy out of the window and try to reinvent the wheel on each camera they release.

I'd rather have an EVF over the crappy OVFs we have nowadays.

Even the VF on high-end cameras like the K-5 is a joke compared to the VF I have in my Pentax ME (which was an entry level SLR, not to mention it's like half the size and FULL FRAME). Dammit, I would only shoot film if that was an option just to have full frame and a VF that doesn't suck.
