Item for Sale
Pentax K3 + DA 50 1.8 + free extra junk

Asking Price
550.00 USD

Item Location
Portland, OR (United States)

Item Description
Camera PENTAX K-3
Shutter Count 7,556
Manufacture Date 2014:11:06

i have just bought a Sony A7S because i do more video than still nowadays and the K1 doesn't have any proper video features.

so goodbye pentax bodies!

the DA 50mm f1.8 is very clean, and comes with original baggie, lens cap, plus an aftermarket lens cap (the da 50 does not come with a cap) that looks too long for a 50mm lens, but on aps-c it is perfect.

also a bunch of old 52mm filters. CPL, rando colors, skylight, etc.

i am also including a few things for free that i can't really use with my a7s, but aren't worth selling on their own:

-D-BG5 grip: i dropped this once and it has a crack in it. it still works as an extra battery and as an extra set of dials/buttons, but it is no longer water-resistant and has some rust inside from the water that got inside because i didn't realize it was cracked...
-Sears 135mm f2.8 manual lens: it's nothing special but have it lying around.
-Vivitar 2x teleconverter: it teleconverts, but the aperture coupling only seems to work on older pre-DA lenses
-extra battery charger: this is leftover from my old k3 which was stolen
-AF201Sa flash: this is another old vintage piece of gear, it works, but has no features besides the actual flashing.

also, not pictured is the eyepiece (i took it off to clean the camera for these photos but left it downstairs)
as well as a IR remote control which works fine but i removed the front plastic ir cover in an effort to get an extra foot of reach.
it works alot better that a wired shutter

ah, ok i understand now, thank you for the clarification.
i don't have any interest in being hired to do video gigs, though.
but to be more relevant to the original topic: you even said she has dedicated videocams. so it sounds like she isn't using her pentax for video.

i am/was just in the same boat so let me share with you while i log back in here to sell my pentax gear:

don't waste your time with pentax for video. the k-70 is not even close to competing with similarly priced cameras from manufacturers that are video-centric. i started with a pentax k100d because i make stop-motion video, and the pentax was great, but now that i am doing live video as well, my pentax isnt just bad, its useless. don't listen to anyone on this forum who doesnt actually work with video. pentax doesn't shoot raw video, which means you cant do much post p4ocessing or color grading at all. terrible compression, no s-log, no exposure-correct framerates, no nothing. it's complete consumer grade video. auto-focus doesnt matter for video because unless you are shooting something for purely anecdotal reasons, you will use manual focus. panasonic gh series or sony a7/6500 or canon if you want a camera/vid hybrid, thats what a majority of the videogrqphers shoot with (also blackmagic, but thats not really a stills camera) and they take photos just as well as comperable pentax's. perso ally i am getting ready to sell my pentax gear and get either an a7s or a cheaper 60fps(!) rx100, because i waited till the full frame was announced, was let down with no video again, and at this point although i love pentax its just unreasonable to continue using a system that doesnt do video.

i shoot stop motion films, which are generally shoot, alter scene, shoot; but when working with live actors certain scenes are just shootshootshoot then ill add animation in in post. at max burst i get about 5 seconds of 10fps playback, the speed at which i can balance smoothness and time devoted to animating.

i also shoot bursts which are destined to be animated gifs.

i never do much traditional photography, you guys are much better at that so i leave it to you.

burst mode on a Pentax K3.
my most used shooting mode.
8.3 fps and up to 80 jpegs in a row... almost ideal for what i do.

but, sometimes i only get as few as 30 jpegs in a burst before slowdown.

does anyone know what exactly determines how many pics the camera maxes out at?

i have done some trials on my own, and this is what i gathered so far:

shooting the exact same scene, i found that i can double my burst length with the following settings:

1) lower ISO gives more pics
2) turning off most processing like CA etc off gives more pics, but some other processing doesn't seem to make a difference.
3) setting jpeg to full size gives more pics than scaling to a smaller jpeg
4) less dynamic scenes equal more pics

i am using a sandisk extreme and it's not an issue with a slow card before anyone asks. i can get up to 80ish pics sometimes.
jsut concerned about camera settings, so i can set one of my user modes to max out the burst.

so anyone have any advice about what determines maximum burst amount?
specifically long bursts of 8fps jpegs.

speaking of...
the one thing that is completely unusable for video is the SR...
once i disabled that i got very good results.
also, you can't shoot at 1/48th of a second at 24fps, but you can shoot at 1/50th and 25fps... not really a big deal but FYI.

hey you know now that i've had my K3 for a while... i have to say that i have not come across any alaising or tearing issues in recording, and it in fact gives very good results so far. i havent used it on any "real" projects, but messing around with it it has really proven itself competant so far.

K3 video question

i jsut bought a K3 myself on black friday and i do mostly video work... but the caveat is that it's stop motion so its really a series of stills.
the K3 video is bad. not horrible but not usable for commercial work. it aliases pretty bad (maybe becasue of no AA filter? i dunno the technical part of why) and the encoding is pretty wonky (from all samples i've seen and buzz i've heard)
if you want to do video i really REALLY recommend the panasonic GH3 or GH4, and get the 12-40mm lens.
these cameras perform as good if not better than the canon 5d and are pretty damn cheap, maybe you can find a black friday deal on one.
if you shoot video handheld, use a wider lens with constant aperture if you plan on zooming. (dont ever zoom)
the longer the lens the more shake in your video. stay in the 15-40mm field and move closer. use a shoulder rig.
an older parfocal lens will be of great benefit as well. i jsut bought a 20-40 limited becasue its parfocal.
up your contrast and tones becasue you will lose alot of it in compression of video compared to stills.
the sony seems ok too, but i've never used one.

thanks for the heads up, man!

is there a difference in "lens kit" versus "lens bundle"?
becasue i would personally love to get a decent quality lens "bundled" with a new k3 at a discount but would have no interest in a "kit" 18-55 or 18-135 lens.

in my use, yeah, the wr lens eventually gets fogged up, but it takes a while to notice.
a regular lens fogs up the slr mirror in an instant, so it makes a huge difference, even just the rubber gasket over the camera mount

im in the same boat, i i just lost my k5 and limiteds along with it so am about to rebuy with all the holiday sales going on... the one lens i want to replace is the 35 limited since i cant afford to replace all, and i decided to go with the 20-40 once i see the black friday deals instead... simply becasue even though i loved the 35 lim more than any other lens ive ever used, i used my 18-55 more becasue of wr. and the 18-55 takes some ugly ass photos comparatively. for me, i do all in-studio work, i dont go out in the rain, but WR has a huge advantage no one is mentioning:

FOG: when taking shots of someone in a hot shower for example, non wr lenses fog up in seconds on the inside of the camera body and lens. the wr makes a huge difference and you only need to wipe off the front of the lens btwn burst shots.

SPILLS: i love drinking while i workk, and let me tell you my camera has had pizza sauce, beer, you name it spilled on it. wouldnt want to do that to a $1000 piece of glass and get moisture on the inside.

so even though the 20-40 isnt QUITE as sharp as the 35, i downscale everything to 1920x1280 anyways so no one would ever tell teh difference and the rendering from sample shots ive seen is gorgeous.

the 35mm macro is the best lens i haev ever owned. it's my desert island lens.
jsut sayin.

as for your more realistic choices, i have owned the old 3.5 35mm screw-mount and sold it to someone on this forum, it was really useless as a digital lens and honestly isn't worth owning.

that's about the only advice i can give, i do not have experience with any of the other lenses, but the preview of the samyang 1.4 on here looked good, that would be my choice based on speculation. 1.4!

k5 AE-AF lock / 11point vs 77
Posted By dominikkolendo

so i found a few threads about this, but nothign that answers my technical question.

on my k5, the center focus point and center exposure works perfectly.
but when i link AE to AF so i can have the camera expose to say, teh far left focus point, i usually get an over/underexposure if teh BG is dark/bright.

i assume this is because the AF points on the sides are large rectangles versus the small precise center AF point, and as such, the ae finds an average of the entire af area, correct?

i had hoped that with 77 segment metering the meter points would engage only in the in focus area of the shot, but perhaps this is not possible?
can someone explain how the focus points and metering poitns are connected exactly and if there are any more accurate ways to link the two other than "mean value of total AF rectangle"

Help with Lens Choice FA 43 vs. DA 35 2.8 vs. DA 40
Posted By dominikkolendo
Replies: 10
1. Does FA 43 has any limitations on a K-5 body? - quick shift, a bit more chromatic abs and shit than the DA (though to be fair that might haev been below 2.8, i dont own it to recheck)
2. There is some complaints about too narrow DOF. Can the problem be improved by aperture setting? - yes, complaints are mountains of molehills
3. Do you think this plan will work for family activities around the house, street, travel and landscape? - its a bit too narrow for indoors
4. Is there a better choice? - very few

the 43 was teh first limited i bought, and recently i purchased teh 35limited for the project i am working on, originally for its macro features.
i sold the 43 after owning the 35 for about a month.
it's that good. i like 35mm over 43 because it gives just the right amount of perspective distortion to make photos slightly more abstract than real life in the best way. 43 seems a bit too flat (of a perspective, the actual rendering is very 3d for a normal lens).

i fell in love with the 35 a) becasue its so sharp that you can see a black pixel next to a white pixel in 100% crops at far distances, and although its a macro lens, the REAL beauty is not using it as a macro lens, but having NO effective minimum focus. thats teh main reason i sold the 43, the closest it focused was about 1.5 feet, which is hindering at times.

i thought 2.8 vs 1.9 would be a big deal, but i never shot at 1.9 unless it was a shot i needed in really low light, because at 1.9 images jsut look noticeably worse than higher apertures. the 35limited i use at 2.8 often and never notice teh difference unless looking at full crops. teh k5 has good high iso and i go to 1600 sometimes and get good shots, the kind only photograpehrs too into their field give a flying **** over how grainy it is.

also, quick shift is important, though on the 35 the only downside is that every one degree you turn the focusing ring, you get about a million inches of focus shift, its very very sensetive, but smooth like butter. the DA has a more... "electronic" feeling than the FA when you turn it, hard to explain, but its a nuance. dotn forget about quick shift.

i own a K5 by the way, so i am (was) in your shoes.
moral of story, the 43 really is a great lens, but the 35 is jsut so versatile and special.
