Picture of K-1

It looks like it has a flip out screen. It is a beautiful camera. It seems t be a improved Nikon D810. I am moving on personally, when ever I use my K5II, I find myself missing the finder features of my A7II. Previewing my shots in the finder is wonderful. The LCD is always hard to see in bright sunlight. :D

My 55-300 zoom was always noisy focusing and it would rack in and out hunting for focus, especially at the long end. I discovered that using spot mode on my K5II corrected the problem. It would focus quickly, even in low light with no hunting. It is like a new lens.

I have found the the half press AF on the shutter button is noisy and clumsy to use when starting a video. My solution is to turn half press AF off in video mode. Assign AF to the AF button on the back of the body. My K5II doesn't focus during video, so separating AF from starting the video is less apt to scare birds etc.. This way I can pre-focus manually with long screw drive lenses when shooting wildlife. Af will then lock on the target with little noise, before starting the video.

Why is Ricoh even bothering with a FF?

Based on the features that appear to be included in the new Pentax full frame camera, it is intended for the professional market. If Pentax is to become a major player, it needs a FF flagship. Aps-c cameras are nice, but they don't command the same recognition that FF's do. I added FF to my kit a couple years ago and I use it more then my aps-c camera. Choices are a good thing. I think that this baby will cost at least 3k USD.

EVF - makes you sick?

I don't think that most of the comments made here are bases on experience with current technology. EVF's have vastly improved in the last few years. I don't have any problems with my Pentax OVF or my Sony A7 series cameras. I did pull my K5II out the other day, to update the firmware. The finder seemed so dark in my office, compared to my A7II. It took me about a week to get used to progressive eyeglasses. Maybe this is the case with some folks, Or maybe they are just to old to accept new ideas.

With an A7x you can send pictures to you phone. Maybe Pentax will offer that if the wi-fi card doesn't already.

The dslr version of the A7RII sensor would require a major rework and a complete new series of engineering samples to start mass production. It takes time to debug a new process with the related lower yield and increased cost. I know that it will happen, but it isn't a cost effective route for Pentax's first dslr FF body in my opinion. I base this on my eighteen years in semiconductor fabrication with Sony.

The A7RII sensor has builtin features that won't work with a dslr and add to cost, as well as reduce yield. I could see Pentax using the existing FSI sensor from the D810. It is optimized for a dslr and is a more mature process giving higher yield and lower cost. The 5 axis FF IBIS would be an easy match and is fantastic. I can shoot at three to four stops slower with my A7II, then I could with my A7R or A7. 36mp sensor with EFCS and IBIS would be great. This together with Pentax weather proof body would be a no brainer for many pros.

Actually there are popular electronic features that don't add much to manufacturing costs. Wi-fi and video are two of them. A menu optional mirror delay is another one. A advanced user camera needs those expected features. A wi-fi card is just a band-aid.

They cost next to nothing on ebay. $9-17 depending on aperture ring or not.

Why would people buy a totally stripped down first generation FF, When you can buy a full featured 24mp FF camera for under $1000 brand new with a warranty. It will accept all of your pentax lenses in both aps-c and FF modes with focus peeking and magnify in the view finder, as well as lenses from most other brands. Of course I am talking about the Sony A7, which would be major competition for a basic Pentax FF.

The new Pentax FF Sensor?

It has worked with the A7 series, because just about any lens ever made will mount on it. It is a different story with the old lens mount concept. I really enjoy my A7x camera, because they accept all of my legacy glass including Pentax in FF or aps-c format.

If a bigger sensor wasn't better, we wouldn't see any improvement with a 645Z over 36mp or 24mp. We all know the 645Z is better, so 36mp is better then 24mp. I do think that Pentax will go with the 24mp Sony sensor with the five axis IBIS included. Sony is testing it for sensor shift now. This will keep the cost down.

M42 screw mount

If you could find a 42 millimeter die with the correct pitch, you couls chase the threads to clean them up. It could be done by hand with a swiss file, by a good craftsman. After cleaning up the threads, I would suggest mount a K-mount adapter permanently. I looked at my 17mm and the threads are very fine.

What could be 'different' about Pentax FF?

I think that it will simply be a FF version of the K3II. This will give some unique features, while hitting the desired price point. It may have a flip out LCD and builtin wi-fi. Five axis IBIS is here, so that could be purchased from Sony as part of the sensor assembly. It is great on my A7II.

The K3II actually has more improvements then I expected. The Flue card is a big let down. Built in Wi-Fi is so easy to do. Lack of a flip out LCD is a disappointment, but I didn't expect it.

I actually own two such cameras. The Sony A7R and the A7II with in body IS like my K5II.

You are right that they need a mirror less with a EVF. At my age hold a camera at arms length isn't practical. If you ever tried to view a LCD in bright sun light, you know that it doesn't work well. I refuse to spend very much on a camera without a view finder.

My A7II is much smaller then my K5II and it is FF. It isn't about sensor size, it is about camera size. Mirror less is the answer for mobility. Anything with a mirror is going to be bigger and heavier.

What I Would Like In A Pentax Mirrorless

I would like to see a FF mirror less Pentax, with a shallow body that uses an adapter for PK lenses. This would allow for a line of compact FF lenses, while retaining the use of the DSLR PK/M42 lenses. The adapter would contain the screw drive motor and electronic pass through. Of course it would have a EVF and focus peeking along with focus magnify.

24 or 36 or 50 for new FF

I think that they should offer a 24mp and a 36mp. It wouldn't be difficult to do. I like 36mp, but my 24mp FF is faster and the 16mp K5II is handy as well.

Can we have a left handed version?

Your dominate eye would be a major factor in comfort. Left eye people have issues with right hand cameras. An right eye people would have issues with the left hand models. I think that how you place your face against the back of the camera is more important then wich hand holds the body.

Full Frame and Crop Mode

Actually the 1.5 is the focal length multiplier, which is based on the diagonal measurement of the the frame. The FF sensor is 2.25 x the area of the Pentax/Nikon asp-c sensor. A 36mp FF sensor is 16mp when cropped to asp-c size. I have been using a 36mp A7R FF for the last year and the 16mp is quite useable. The A7R performs the same as my K5II, since the pixel pitch and generation are the same

If you didn't like the K5, why would you like the K3? Maybe the bigger brighter view finder of a FF camera would help you capture those dream shots. A full size 100% finder really work great for me. Of course my K5II is a lot of fun to use too, but it can't accept many of my legacy glass as designed.
