I don't know this for sure, but I'm guessing that ILC manufacturers make most of their money from lenses rather than camera bodies, especially for high-end equipment. And I also suspect that an exciting new camera stimulates lens sales, both from new adopters (does Pentax still get those?) and us old fogies. So camera bodies are at least in part a marketing device.

But does this apply to Pentax? On the one hand, Ricoh/Pentax does not have to worry too much about 3rd party lens manufacturers "stealing" their sales, since there are few of them left making K-mount. On the other hand though, almost uniquely, Pentax shooters can still use decades-old glass that doesn't add to the company bottom line in any way. How does this affect the optimal strategy for Ricoh/Pentax? Do they even have a mid- or long-term strategy? All their talk about looking after their existing base worries me, as it is not sustainable as the sole focus.

Agreed. But I can't detect any efforts in that direction unfortunately.

I get about 48 Mb/s download and 18 Mb/s upload, but prefer to look after my own storage.

You didn't say what the relative cost of the two options is. Maybe the cheapest is the best option, at least to start with.

This lens is actually pretty FF compatible above about 18 mm. I wonder if a rudimentary tweak could extend that range. The DA 10-17 fisheye was made more FF-friendly by installing a removable hood, so perhaps an updated version may have more than HD coating.

It's still on sale and in stock on The Australian Pentax webstore.

You may want to pick a lens that gives good starbursts. The SMC DA 15 Limited is famous for them, but there are other good options. You need to stop down quite a bit though (depending on lens). Longish exposures on a tripod give the best results, and might even produce pleasing light trails from vehicles for added interest.

The "glow" you mention can be got by overexposing the highlights; most photographers (including me) try to avoid this.

Composition? Perhaps start off by having your main point of interest off-centre, perhaps around 1/3 of the width from the edge, with something leading your eye towards the centre.

DFA 28-105 @ 53 mm, f/11, 12 sec exposure.

Pentax DA 10-17 fisheye comparison vs Canon

I have the old DA 10-17, so it can only be used above about 14.5 mm on the K1. Here is a FF shot at 15 mm that shows that it's still pretty fishy.

The new DA 10-17 with removable hood doesn't give a fully round image at 10 mm; it cuts off at top and bottom. Nevertheless, it looks pretty good to me, and I've been thinking of "upgrading".

15 mm, by a comfortable margin. Especially with the DA 15 Ltd on APS-C (and a little in 1:1 ratio on FF), but also DFA 15-30 on FF.

The hype leading up to the release of the 645Z was well-managed by Ricoh. They put in the effort. And yet they were surprised by the very strong sales, so I believe there must have been further production runs following. I don't know the current status though. It may depend on when the next update is planned, for which we have no information.

I get a far better keeper rate than that with the K1, even for birds, which are harder than 1 year olds.

Still, I take your point. I expect big AF improvements in the K-new. :)

This is consistent with my comparisons (not nearly as extensive as yours) of the Sigma 50-500 with the DFA 150-450. The DFA is slightly sharper with better contrast throughout, but the Sigma is a fine lens at a much cheaper price.

It's absolutely true for colour blindness. The relevant gene resides on the X chromosome, of which women have two. If one has the fault and the other doesn't, the woman is not colour blind, though can pass it on to her children. Men have only one X chromosome, and if that is faulty they will be colour blind. The simple arithmetic of this results in about 1 in 12 males being colour blind but only 1 in 200 females.

I've only recently reconnected with my inner APS-C photographer, having shot FF almost exclusively for 3 years. My old K3 is enjoying the attention, mostly with the DFA 150-450. The improved high-ISO performance of the KP is very tempting though, especially with the current attractive pricing. However, the projected K-new is intriguing; I will wait to see what it brings to the table.

Enjoy your KP, and post some shots.
