His time estimate was a bit off, in a really good way. They arrived today and are already loaded with film.

Pentax KX, sound like a good deal for beginner?

My comment about shutter speed wasn’t specific to the KX, but to Pentax in general. We don’t see anything faster than 1/2000 until you get into the plastic bodies and gears that don’t last and aren’t readily repairable anymore. A twist of a shutter speed dial is certainly faster than swapping ND filters. We’re talking Pentax here, not a $5,000 Leica M-P with a max speed of 1/1000 compared to, as mentioned, the Voigtlander’s 1/2000 and being cheaper than both Leica and Zeiss.

Pentax mechanical cameras with 1/2000? I need to invest in ND filters. That's the primary area I'm completely lacking and would solve that problem for me. I have an itch to try a rangefinder, but I'm not willing to pay Leica money for a camera that's no more capable than any of my Pentax bodies. Sure, wonderful glass, but not likely so wonderful that I'll see the difference and at what cost? I'd like to try a Bessa R3m and some TLR (with an awesome 1/500th max speed).

Very nice (cosmetic) MX and A50/1.4, both of which are currently in the tender, loving hands of Eric Hendrickson.

MX-1 - New Firmware update

I have an MX-1, but this is one (of many) reasons why I predominantly shoot film these days. I don't need support or firmware updates or constant new wizardry from my cameras. I need Eric Hendrickson, on occasion for service of a newly acquired body and eventually for him to train a replacement as he won't work on film SLRs forever. I really need to just sell my K-5iis and digital-specific lenses. I have the MX-1 for lowlight and raw needs, which rarely is anything other than family snapshots anyway. Might just get that ad posted this coming week.

I wish Pentax had kept up better with others on their mechanical shutter speeds. 1/1000 is on the slow end compared to the 1/4000th offered by others. I really enjoy the KX body I have. Itís the only one of my regularly used cameras that hasnít made the holy pilgrimage to Ericís bench. The one I have was owned by a journalist for a newspaper in Wyoming. Inprobably donít use my LX to its capabilities, but it just has some basic features not found on other Pentax bodies. ME Super goes to 1/2000, but lacks the DOF preview and MLU of the KX.

I’ve only had a a few items serviced, but three of them are pushing four years since he had them on his bench. No issues whatsoever. He currently has an MX torn down for me that I can’t wait to get back. I have a package inbound from Knoxville, TN and as much as I want it to be my MX and A50/1.4, that doesn’t match his estimated timeline for the repair.

Any thoughts on finding a bigger clock face and using a donor K-mount lens for the mount and fill the entire lens mount with a clock face? I have an M50/2 and an M28-50 with worn out focusing mechanisms that would be donors.

Not complaining or commenting on the appropriateness of the price by any means nor was it a passive aggressive haggle. Free bump and I'm interested, but not ready to pull the trigger. But thanks for policing.

I prefer the composition of the shot with the Elmar. I think that helps a lot. It'd be interesting to throw both of them on the tripod back to back to compare exact shots and framing, at least what the lenses and format allow for similarities.

What's your post look like on the color photos? They look good. Almost a Kodak Portra feel.

I bought my daughter an *ist DL for her seventh birthday to start learning photography with a real camera.

A local property owner has a patch of flowers specifically for photography use. Signs are posted to not pick the flowers. Last hour of light, this place gets pretty crowded. Shot an entire roll with a recently acquired K35/3.5 to check out the focal length. Likely going to become my walk-around focal length over the 50 or 55.

Sometimes the kids cooperate. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes, I'm fast enough it doesn't matter. Took the kids to the park for an afternoon after being in Africa for a little while. ZX-30, didn't make note of the lens. Could be 77 or F50/1.7, Tri-X 400 pushed two stops

Kid went from a trike to 16" bike without training wheels in a matter of weeks. Fun part about film is seeing how much transpires between the shutter click and a developed photograph.

Pentax LX, probably K35/3.5, Expired TMAX3200 pulled to 1600. Even though it was stored in the fridge, most of these came out underexposed, even when using a Sekonic meter. Only roll of TMAX 3200 I have or likely ever will, so maybe it was just the film was slower than actually rated on the box.

Yup, she has the "Seriously?" look on her face. Quite energetic pup that enjoys harassing and pestering their other lab, but I think she was less than enthused about me wanting her to sit still for the picture.

Hannah, my parents' lab pup. One of the first frames on my first 120 roll through the 645n. X-posted from the film shots thread.
