BIF With DA200mm - quite a bit of cropping - PentaxForums.com
This shows the AFC of K20D is just foolproof indeed. I was really far away indeed and given only 3 seconds to respond

The tracking power of the vintage K20D is nothing to laugh at (as shown)

No more cheap Pentax camera ...

I worry a lot less about body than my inability to make full use of my lenses. Bodies are electronics. Nothing less and nothing more. Lenses are the guts. I still use my K20D even though I use the new cheapo K70. So far so good for both

One needs to look at how wide a 17-18mm is without the crop factor.
I can tell you: it is ultra wide (from Zenitar 16mm ) indeed (from film)

K70 + DA200mm BIF

I was using the above combo and they weren't that good compared with my manual focus shots (for BIF)

Unlike MF, I could not nail the focus particuarly the third one. If I was using manual and infinity, I think I could have nailed it. I have no clue where the lens was focusing as I was panning like crazy (3-4 seconds).

In such circumstance, MF does prevail. I still have to learn about K70 (too new) I agree

Lucky you in having both. I would love to try out the older F version indeed.

I use the FA 135 mm for portrait

Its sharpness (even at F:3.5) has to be toned down a lot of time.

This on at F:2.8

K lenses are manual focus anyway which is always easy for wide angle lenses. Try to find a Zenitar F:2.8 is even more difficult

With 300mm the DoF is always little. That is why the distance marking is critical. My eye sight is still ok for critical focusing

I have the A* version and I love it. The only thing I need to be careful is purple fringing. Avoid direct sunlight is a good move.
Manual focus is simply a joy to use. (see the distance marking)

Do we still have SDM issues?

It is to be much ado with nothing.
Pentax like everybody does not want these to be overblown. Overall, SDM issue like all other hardware issue , is a hit and miss thing. I have only one SDM equipped lens. It just works beyond expectation. It does not translate into anything at all as I can be just unlucky or lucky as anyone

I think that works for lens 30mm or longer. For UWA there is not much need.
Will try it out later

That is provided that the camera did not hesitate. I doubt if it worked at all.
Maybe you did not look at the exif of the series of images. I was using DL in late 2006

That wasn't so. I was holding my long lens 300mm and figuring it out that I might get the woodpecker with some birdfood. I recall I put the lens back to my bag and yanked out the fisheye/camera. I set it to around 3 ft all in one hand.
It happened very fast.

The lens has very short minimum focus distance (0.3m) indeed

Yes. It was impossible for me to get behind the viewfinder to focus (if on AF) on the woodpecker on my left hand.
The circumstance cannot be replicated as I was shooting with the long lens until I saw the woodpecker was circling for food. I yanked out the other camera (luckily with a fisheye) and I took the series. If I waited for AF, I missed the series entirely. It was as I said, once in a lifetime thing

It is good that we have such lively discussion this weekend.
Try this set up which we have from time to time.
Use a UWA lens with AF and then with MF setting to shoot running kids or dogs in good light. For doing the MF (part) just set the distance gauge to the minimum focus distance of the lens and fire in burst.
I am sure you will get more images in focus doing MF (compared with those set with AF).

With AF.S or any type of AF, the computer (or the camera) still has to carry out the work. The hesitation in such a fast pace shots is the problem.
MF has no such issue at all. The camera just fires with no question asked

He tries to mix that up with personal preference/taste.

With MF , one can fire at will.

I won't blame the newer generation of photographers not trusting MF technique as the distance gauge on newer AF lenses just sucks big time.

There are very special circumstance where AF behind the viewfinder has no chance at all.
This was a once in a lifetime shots (in series) with me setting a fisheye to shoot a bird on my left hand (at 3 feet distance away). I had less than a few seconds to respond. I set the distance on the dial and fire non stop until the bird flew away in less than 5 seconds

I am saying that manual focus with wide angle lenses is super easy given its huge depth of field. That has nothing to do with subjective preference.
And as a result of that, buying MF fisheye /UWA lens make sense money wise. I am suggesting that AF function is redundant in majority of the cases
