See the Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black I linked above. Usually available at gun and ammo and some hardware stores. Anything used for retouching weapons will be very durable.

I guess the thing to do is use one of the older AF macros that don't use internal focusing, leave it in AF mode and see what focal length is recorded in the EXIF at 1:1 extension.

I always enter the focal length of the lens. Seems to work.

Experiment and report your findings.

Camera & Lens-Adapter for HAMA/Spiratone/Kenlock Shift/Swing/Tilt-Bellow

Progress! You might be able to replace the Nikon F mount plate on the Hama adapter with a Pentax K from a third party if the outside diameter and mounting screws are the same.

These guys seem to have a selection of adapters for the BPM bellows including a rare universal adapter ring.

Try this: use a high contrast brightly lit target like some newsprint. Using your 100mm in AF mode center point - lock the focus - beep and confirmation lit in viewfinder. Switch to manual focus - half shutter press - don't touch the focus ring. It should beep like crazy as you move the focus point around on the target.

Manual focus can be very tricky as it doesn't lock on and the slightest movement of the camera or focus will throw it off. Even more difficult with a relatively slow UWA lens. You need to use a very light and slow touch when turning the focus ring. It takes some practice but you soon develop the right touch and can focus swiftly. If you turn the ring too quickly you may never get a beep.

Camera & Lens-Adapter for HAMA/Spiratone/Kenlock Shift/Swing/Tilt-Bellow

Well then you'll have to go with modifying a K-mount adapter or extension tube. You'd need an adapter that goes into a camera with a throat diameter of 44mm which would be Pentax K-mount, Nikon F, Leica M, Konica Hexar or Micro 4/3. Just grind off the tabs and if there is enough material have someone cut a groove for the set screws on a lathe setup. Either of the adapters or extension tubes I linked above should do. You could probably do without the groove but it would be less secure.

For the camera body adapter even easier have a machine shop put a standard T-mount thread of 42 0.75mm on a 44mm tube and you can use any T2 adapter on it. If you can't find a local shop to do it priceparts.com could do it but it would probably be much more expensive.

Giving up on repairing K-70. Thinking of going to K-1 but not the K-1 Mark II

Having the camera repaired or replaced under the protection plan is a no-brainer to me. The repaired camera will be still covered by warranty - both the original and Advance's warranty. You can always sell the repaired camera with full disclosure - being factory repaired will carry a lot of weight and you'll get more than selling a camera in pieces for parts.

Given your experience with the new camera failing within six months what's to keep a brand new k-70 or K-1 (or Canon/Nikon/Sony/Fuji/Leica/Olympus for that matter) from failing within six months too? Advance Camera has a one year warranty.

Repair | Advance Camera

You mainly seem shy about your K-70 because Precision wasn't able to find a reason why it failed during a winter shooting session. Cameras will fail if cold enough and operate again normally once the internal temperatures rise. The service procedures don't include testing the equipment in winter conditions. Precision never gives detailed comments on their repairs, the paperwork is probably generated straight from checklists. Did the camera fail again since you sent it in?

K1 Mk ii. Is Pentax marketing as dead as Tony Northrup says?

You're quick to point that out, and while it is true that he said that you fail to say that Tony Northrup gave a very favorable hands on review of the K-1 and other Pentax DSLRs.

He gave his reasons for thinking it was a mistake because he thought it would divert resources from what the Pentax brand has been doing best - APS-C DSLRs.

Given the grumblings on PF about the lack of new lenses and an announcement of a high-end APS-C body to replace the K-3i/K-3ii it seems he may have a point there.

Yes, why pay for something and then not use it? It's not like car insurance and they raise the premium on you.

Seems like there's a whole lot of that going on on PF too. Just look at the threads on Asahi man and the K-1ii.

I would still give the protection plan a try. At best they will replace the camera, second best approve and cover the repair. Worst the can deny or weasel out. However if the damage should be covered then maybe a consumer protection agency can convince them to honor the plan.

And you can still buy a K-1 and you'd have a backup body (albeit APS-C).

You'd need a repair estimate to better decide to repair or replace.

Camera & Lens-Adapter for HAMA/Spiratone/Kenlock Shift/Swing/Tilt-Bellow

Ok, so you have the extension piece and a Nikon lens to bellows adapter.

Pentax K-mount should fit in the Nikon adapter. Normally the focus mark would be 180 but since you can rotate the adapter any way you want in the bellows not a problem.

For the bellows to camera body adapter you can take a standard T2 to K-mount adapter remove the inner threaded ring and have a machine shop mill you a short tube that goes from the outside diameter of the threaded ring to 44mm. I measured this to be 48mm on one of my adapters but this may vary. The shop can also cut the grooves on both ends of the tube for the set screws. Paint the inside of the tube matt black and you should be good to go.

The user manual states (page 4, English version):

Do not clean the camera with organic solvents such as alcohol, and benzine.

So yes, I'd say you probably caused the material to break down.

You can try USCamera.com and see if they will order the parts for you if you think you can handle DIY replacement.

Well actually it could serve a dual purpose - for K-1 mk II and SR II. I wonder if they will return the old "SR" badge is you could stick it on your camera bag or something.

Advice requested - Send camera to factory or back to me from Advance Camera?

The "factory" would be to send it to Japan and the main repair center there. Precision routinely sends lens back to Japan, most like because of parts, so their protocols for doing so are well established and turn around times don't seem (for the most part) awful.

Camera & Lens-Adapter for HAMA/Spiratone/Kenlock Shift/Swing/Tilt-Bellow

Last year some time there were some Spiratone bellows adapters for sale on eBay. I don't know if they were for this model or not. As I recall some of the Spiratone bellows used T-mount on the body side and a reversed T-mount adapter for the objective side. Finding the mounts separate from the bellows is extremely rare. The one auction mentioned above was the only time I've seen anybody selling the adapters in the 20 odd years I've been on eBay. There was a thread on the adapters for sale.

The bellows has been out of production for quite some time and it is unlikely you could order OEM adapters for it. I don't know of anybody who makes or sells reverse T-mount adapters.

This company might be able to build you a custom adapter but be warned they are not cheap. You'd have to contact them by email to explain what you need.

https://www.preciseparts.com/ppmain/index.html

The photo of the unit you show above appears to have a lens adapter on the bellows. What does it look like without the adapter? There is a set screw on the adapter and 3 screws on the standard. Which holds the adapter on? If it just the one and there is a short tube sticking out of standard you might be able to get a short extension tube and remove the male portion of the mount and fit it on the tube. If it is the three screws and a short tube goes into the standard then you might be able to attach a short tube to an short extension tube.

According to this post all you need for the camera side is any standard T2 mount adapter - you just have to take off the outside collar first.

Here we go:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/SPIRATONE-RING-TUBE-RIGHT-FLANGE-ADAPTER-FOR-PENTAX...p2047675.l2557

Looks to me that with a little work you could modify an adapter such as:

Or some crap extension tubes like these:

Right, get an estimate if you can. They may just classify it as "beyond economical repair", e.g. cost to repair equals or exceeds the cost of replacing the camera. Protection plan will probably just replace the camera.

I vote not relevant as I don't have a K-1. However, if I did I would most likely upgrade it.
