Well, I have the gear, but not the skill to do either the camera or lens justice. I am enjoying it though, part of the reason I got it is its close up ability, and it does not disappoint.

I shot does image of a rock on one of my first outings with it (it being the zeiss 25mm/2.8)

This is nothing new right? I'd argue that all lenses without aperture ring could already not be used on a lot of older cameras. Lenses are not always backwards compatible, but cameras are, and pentax keeps doing that. That way we can keep using our (sometimes large) collection of pentax glass, while occasionally updating the camera. Updating a camera once every very many years is a much more financially feasible solution to users than having to change all lenses by changing the mount completely.

Hello all, this is not strictly ZK news (but rather ZS news). Fujiya in Japan (a shop in Nakano, Tokyo) is apparently selling off some of their stock. They are currently selling new Zeiss distagon 25/2.8 in ZS mount (M42) including a K&F mount converter of your choice for just under 50000 yen, or 463USD or 416 Euro (today they were out of converters though, but I took that as an excuse to buy the pentax genuine converter instead). As far as I can tell, that is far under even used prices. They won't sell internationally, so if you are not in Japan, you'd have to use one of these intermediate companies to order and ship for you. Maybe it is still worth it? In any case, I'm quite excited to be joining the pentax-zeiss owner club!

Some shops in Japan still carry the K-1. Fujiya in Nakano (tokyo) interestingly has it for nearly the same price as the special edition KP (~133.000 yen). The K-1 mark 2 is about 211k yen in the same shop.

Why do you keep insisting it is realistic for pentax to release a camera with tech pentax currently doesn't have (fast framerate, high buffer, good AF which are all required to be competitive in the 24MP FF market) at a cheaper price than competitors who released such cameras that did already have that tech?

Pentax was able to release a good D810 competitor because the existing strengths of pentax (high IQ, tricks with the IS system to get extra detail and colour fidelity) could be used, and some things specific things (pixelshift, astrotracer) could be ported from other models (with some extra engineering of course). Pentax has never been a top contender in speed and AF in the digital world as far as I remember, so what makes you think they can suddenly bypass Nikon, Sony and Canon who have been investing research into these areas continuously? And then somehow come out with a cheaper product?

To me it seems like continuing to play to the traditional pentax strengths by putting out a D850 competitor at a lower-than-D850 price seems more plausible. That said, I'd be quite interested in a 24MP FF. I don't care much about the speed or AF though, and I think it would be hard for pentax to compete in the 24MP FF market.

I guess the new APSC might give a bit of a hint as to what will happen to the next FF. The new tech in that camera will likely end up in the next FF to some extent.

If 'legitimate rhetoric technique' means it can win a debate in some cases (i.e., its an effective technique) than so are most fallacies.

Whether that definition works or not, both ad hominem and fallacies, regardless of efficiency are bad form, and do indeed take away from your own credibility even if the rest of your arguments are convincing.

(To go ad absurdum: if one wants to convince another person to do something they don't want to do, threats of violence or actual violence are an extremely effective technique. That doesnt mean they should be employed)

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense, I didn't think about objects our of the focus plane, but it matters.

When I first started stacking, I somehow had not thought about the fact that the object in focus keeps the same size as you shift the camera. This makes objects looks slightly unreal. Especially in the case you shoot things with regular features on a flat plane. With a normal picture (or a stack changing the focus point) you expect to see some perspective, but with stacking shifting the camera/lens (or object) the perspective disappears, so you get some type of orthographic projection instead. Unfortunately a telecentric lens won't change that. With insects, this lack of perspective is not clear as insects are not mostly parallel straight lines.

Yes, its always a lot easier to build a device with new technology you have not developed and have no in-house experience with than it is to improve existing technology to get better performance. Much easier. For sure. Its like printing money.

Lets take that ad absurdum. Why make photographs at all? Using photoshop, and perhaps some other software such as blender, and infinite skill and time, one can produce any picture at all without having to use a camera. Why waste money on camera and lenses? Just make it from scratch.

(In case it was unclear, I agree the lensbaby's have a place, and disagree with the people that disregard it because hypothetically it can be done in post. That said, I dont have a lensbaby yet. The Sol looks like a more convenient version of my DIY tiltshift though, so I might consider it)

I have a different opinion on this one. I think the LX is one of the best looking cameras ever made, and it would take real talent to make it ugly. But they definitely managed (and then some). What an abomination. Now the titanium version on the other hand...

They did specifically mention astrotracer, and also specifically mentioned that most of the features were present on the previous flagship.

The quotes from the DPR page about these two specific points:

'Backlit controls and neat features like 'Astrotracer' make it attractive to nocturnal photographers, too.'
'The K-1 was packed with all the special features that Pentax users had come to appreciate in the company's APS-C DSLRs'

Laowa and Mitakon both have a few lenses that do more than 1:1 magnification, and both have gotten good reviews, although its not clear if they are really better than connecting lenses in reverse.

However I'd say these lenses do not directly compete. The laowa is even more niche and specialistic than this one, only starting at 2:1 magnification and needing very close working distance.

I was wondering if the near-telecentric design would help for my specific applications, but thinking about it more, I think it probably doesnt. Unless I'm mistaken, in most cases people fix the magnification and focus distance, and then move the camera (or object) for focus stacking. I think in such a case you get a 'telecentric' result in any case. I'd be happy to be wrong about this though.

Its indeed quite specialistic, but from 1-5x magnification its still useful for lots of things. A lot of insect close-up is in that range for example. For a long time only Canon had a lens like this, the MP-65. The only choice we had as pentaxians were to use tricks (extension tubes, bellows, reversing lenses etc). A few years ago both Laowa and Mitakon started doing lenses with more than 1:1 magnification in all mounts. This one is a bit different from what has come before, because it has a longer working distance and a large magnification range. I guess its the first real competition for the more expensive canon MP-65.

I'm no good at it, but have shot magnifications from 1x-6.5x using different combinations of lenses (from just the D-FA 100mm to a reversed pentax-M 28mm/3.5 to a 28mm/3.5 reversed on top of a pentax-M 200mm/4). For me this could be rather interesting. Then again, I already have those lenses, and their performance is pretty good. Small working distance is not a problem for me since I rarely shoot insects at high magnification.

This lens does not compete with the 100mm DFA WR. As far as I understand, it has no focus ring. The distance is set completely by the magnification. The DFA WR can be used for many things, this thing starts where the working range of the DFA ends. The DFA, at its shortest working distance is 1:1 macro. This lens does 1:1 macro as its minimum, up to 5:1 macro. In other words, The biggest you can get something to appear in-frame with the D-FA is the smallest you can get it with this.

Unlike the D-FA, this won't do landscapes, portraits, or studio photography. Only 1:1 and higher magnification macro.

---------- Post added 12-04-2019 at 03:04 PM ----------

I dont see why that depends on in-camera focus stacking. This lens, especially at higher magnifications, will need focus stacking even more than the 100mm, as the depth of field will be smaller. Getting a large depth of field needs focus stacking in either case.

This is also a statement I cannot understand. What do you mean you will wait until its polished? Do you think you have an opportunity to get the camera before its polished? And would you be afraid that you might give it a bad review if so?

Some people seem to keep claiming that for the camera to turn up in summer 2020, which has not been confirmed, would be a delay from some earlier possible release date. I don't understand where this comes from. Ricoh / Pentax never stated the camera would come out earlier, as far as I know.
Similarly, while it might come out earlier than June 2020, it could also come out later. If so, people will probably complain about the 'delay' even more. There is no delay as long as the camera does not come out later than an official date. Such a date does not exist.

interview with Ricoh Imaging General Sales Manager for Europe

Its a nice part of the interview to look back at. But it seems to me your conclusions from it are rather coloured by your own impressions. Of the 3 conclusions you said Ricoh has clearly stated, none of them can be extracted from from the interview, they are all purely interpretation / speculation.

'they don't think that EVFs are there yet.': Nothing in the quoted text indicates such an opinion. It says some users might prefer an OVF, nothing about how good EVFs are.

'a good quality OVF is still valued by a segment of the customers and will not be served well by releasing an EVF camera'. The first part of this sentence can be concluded from the interview. The second cannot. Later he explicitly even states that he things some users might swap back, some might use both systems. Whereas I would in principle agree with the statement that some users might not be well served by only releasing mirrorless cameras, this was not a point of view directly expressed by Sugahara-san here.

'they are not averse to releasing mirrorless cameras down the road if they think the tech is right.' This point of view seems to agree with the interview from the general sales manager Europe which this thread is about (but one could question whether those are more his own thoughts on the matter or the thoughts of the people making the decisions in Japan), but cannot be concluded from the lines you quoted from this other interview.

Ricoh's financial results for Q2 - Pentax still not doomed.

For me the 15-30 is out because of the bulk immediately. I leave much smaller lenses at home because of their size, unless if I need them for a specific use.By all accounts the pentax FA-20mm/2.8 and FA*24/2 are very good lenses. So decent pentax glass is available. Otherwise there is also the zeiss 21mm distagon, although it might be harder to find, and the 20mm voigtlander. The samyangs are available new. And what is this nonsense about 'daring' to make more primes. We know that the rate at which Ricoh/Pentax produces new lenses is rather slow. They'll probably get around to it eventually. In terms of the 85, there are a lot of 85s in the pentax system (besides the one that supposedly is coming out next). The FA* especially seems to be one of the most highly regarded lenses pentax has made, although some people say its optimized for portraiture, so it might not be best for your landscape goals. There are several others to choose from though.

Its not a fact, it's an opinion.

It is a fact there are lenses. It is a fact that according to the opinion of some people, there should be lenses that are not there.

In order for it to be a fact that lenses are lacking, there would have to be a non-opinion standard about what constitutes as a 'lack' in a lens lineup. No such standard exists, its just based on opinion. What some people might perceive as a sparse or lacking lineup is sufficient and complete for others. Hence opinion, not fact. If you were to state: 'some lenses I want cannot be bought new from pentax', that would also be a fact. That does not directly translate to 'the pentax system suffers from a lack of lenses'.

(It might not be interesting, bu in my opinion for example there is no lack of lenses. Of course a modern tilt-shift, magnifying macro and other niche stuff does not (or at least barely) exist. And for some lenses you have to go third-party or used. I also agree that it would make sense for pentax to sell a wide fast prime to complement the astro-tracer, instead of only the rather bulky and expensive 15-30 (FF) and 11-18(APSC). In practice though, I have the samyang 14/2.8 and am unlikely to buy a second massive wide angle lens even if pentax does make one. Its also very unlikely pentax would make one that can compete on price, and they might have decided that there is not much room in the fast ultrawide market due to Samyang and Irix. I'd also like to see something like a 20mm FF lens, but I'd probably anyway prefer the 20mm/2.8 that already exists, because a possible new one is bound to be much larger.)

I think to a large degree this is true, but to another large degree people simply assume that older lenses aren't good enough because other people say they aren't good enough. Looking at how lenses are reviewed, apart form the fact that pentaxians obviously like pentax and tend to give pentax lenses high grades, it does seem to be the case that older zooms dont do well at all, apart from the previously mentioned examples (plus the 24-50mm). The fact that even older OEM pentax zooms get bad marks makes me trust the high marks the few well-reviewed zoom lenses receive more. Is that justified? I can't tell. I don't own a comparable couple of new and old-but-highly-reviewed zooms.
