Pentax K100D body

Asking Price
$160 or best offer

Item Location

Item Description
I want to get a newer Pentax body so I'm letting this one go.

It's in fine shape. However, the viewfinder has some kind of smudge/smears/scratches..hard to tell.. makes it hard to see through the viewfinder though.
I took a photo of it, you can make it out a little:

I've contemplated on sending it to Pentax or KEH to have them take a look but I honestly don't have the time to or really care to since I have my eyes on a newer Pentax body.

Otherwise it's fine!

I'm flexible on the price. Not sure what this body is worth, I've seen perfect-looking ones going for $300. This hasn't seen much "action" at all in the 3-4 yrs I've owned it.

Pentax vs Sigma both 17-70mm

...this thread popping up is great, I just sold my 18-55 kit and 50-200 and looking for something with more range than the kit lens.

It seems very hard to decide.
I'm leaning towards the Sigma because of price and macro-feature.
I'll probably get a DA 55-300 later

K100D Viewfinder smudge/scratch

I was just hoping maybe there was some kind of cleaner that could get it off.
I'm a car geek so I just had some idea there was 'something' out there. My only guess is something like sand got in the viewfinder when I was outside shooting and I rubbed the cloth in there not knowing.

Res: That sucks! I'm sure that happened in slo-motion with you yelling "NOOOOOOoOOoOOOOo!"

Anyway, at least you can see thru yours, mine is like vaseline. K100D isn't exactly fantastic in the AF department so not having visual confimation of something being focused is a bit annoying. (I use MF 90% of the time).

Well at least it's the back-up to the K10D I have anyway...:hmm:

I saw a Prius driver today gabbin' on his cellphone and not using his turn signal while making lane changes (at terrifying speed!) then later the same day I saw an old guy roll up in a Prius at the gas-station I was parked in to get some propane... his tires were all under-inflated too... oooooohh the irony.

Wow! I'd like to know how you managed that at dusk w/o getting run over like you mentioned.

Definitely. I don't bring my camera to car shows, I just go to look for this reason. The lighting stinks and the gobs and gobs of kids and people is too frustrating for me.

A good rule to go by for any kind of photography!

Those are great RioRico!
Reminds me of that silly Monsters show on the History Channel when they were talking about mysterious "rods" in this recording of a deep cave in Mexico. It was just the person was using an old camcorder and the fast swallows showed up as 'rods' when they did a slow-motion replay. But they kept saying they were aliens

Good to hear you are treated well.. from what I've read they treat their employees way better in other countries than here in the U.S. Nevertheless, I stand by my previous statement. Rather support the mom-n'-pop shops when possible.

I shouldn't have been called "small-minded" either but eh..some people don't care about Walmart's "ethics" and supporting local shops.

Never thought I'd bump into a Wal-mart sympathizer on this forum!
Of course they're protecting their asses, they're Wal-mart that's all they do.
I never said I disagreed with what they did either, that's their legal right.
What I was questioning is why go to them in the first place? They are awful and they are not a camera store/specialists.

I took my camera bag and a shoulder/messenger-style bag on the plane to the Dominican Rep. this past March. You should have no issues at all, esp. when I saw what other people were lugging onto the plane. You should be able to put the bigger bag (i'm guessing the video stuff will be big) in the overhead compartment and the camera bag can tuck under your seat.

sd flash card question

When it comes to digital SLR's they DO make a difference. Plain cheapo cards are for point-and-shoots.
That said, I've always used San-disk cards with no problems. I have 2 or 3 Extreme 2-4gb SDHC cards for my K10D and since my older K100 doesn't have SDHC I can only get up to 2gb Ultras in Sandisk brand. The Ultra line is significantly cheaper and still decently fast. I can't make any comparisons to slower cards since that's all I've ever used.

What is great about these high speed cards is your camera writes to the card faster (important for sports shooting) and makes uploading them on your computer faster as well. Not to mention SDHC cards have a higher capacity which is good if you shoot a lot of RAW-file images. The Extremes, being the highest write speed, are supposedly shock and resistant to extreme temperatures. They also come with a cool retrieval cd in case you erase your card, and mini usb card reader (which I absolutely love).
Another good brand is Lexar. PNY is decent and Kingston is "ok" but I've had compatibility problems with that brand on a old Minolta D-SLR. I'd stay away from anything else as there's a lot of sketchy reviews out there for the other brands (A-data,Transcend,etc)

All in all, you got to think about what you'll be doing w/ the camera to justify shelling out the extra $ for the 'Extreme' or other higher-speed cards. IMO, they're so cheap online, I just get the best ones.

What I want to know is why did you go to Walmart to get photos processed?
I'd drive out of state to a local camera shop or any other place before I gave Walmart a dime (hate that company to no end, they are evil). Or sent it off online to Mpix or Adorama.

I did what could be called "professional" nude photos for a studio lighting class at college and took them to my local camera shop to have big prints made for critique. There was a backdrop, props, etc. No questions asked and got it printed in short order.

I hope you told them your'e never going back there again after they hasseled you (I don't care if it's in their legal right either, that company can kiss my posterior).

K100D Viewfinder smudge/scratch

Well this is the first time I've posted on the forum in a very long time but I've been pretty happy w/ my Pentaxes.

Anyway, I was doing some photographing at my job when I noticed the viewfinder was all smudged up. I cleaned it up w/ one of my lens cloths and a dab of rubbing alcohol and noticed it didn't go away.

They look like hairline scratches but they are smudged up to the point that my eye can't tell what's in focus. Pictures come out fine, but the viewfinder is frustrating--to say the least.

What should I do? I have a warranty thru Mack I think.. I got it thru KEH and it was near-perfect(bought it as a back-up camera) or perhaps I should send to Pentax? Or should I try something else to clean it or polish it? Is it glass or plastic? Can't tell.

It doesn't photograph very well, even with a polarizer so here's what you can make out of it:

Update: Well Pentax has it at the moment, I called a week or so ago and they said they have to replace the circuit board. Woooo! $275 .. not that bad considering the camera's original price. I can't wait to have it back. In the meantime, I bought a K100D as a backup camera.

Hey thanks RiceHigh! That helps me out a bunch. I'll go w/ the K100D, I've had the K10D for a while and am surprised by the noise as well. Is this just the case for 10mp sensors and affects the K200 and K20D as well? Generally I went for the K10 for the faster AF and fps (not by much) but it helps with the car photography I usually do.

Yeah I noticed the noise on the K10 gets pretty pronounced around 800.

So no difference in viewfinders between the DS and K100? Cool, I'll lean towards the K100, I'm looking at a used one online and it's only $50 more than a used DS. The K100 is probably still lighter than the K10 right? Or does it have the same metal/alloy type body as well? I don't really mind, as this will be my backup camera. The K100 still uses AA's right?

In lieu of my K10D being shipped off to Pentax for memory card issues, I was thinking I could've bought a back up camera a long time ago so I wouldn't be in the pickle I am in now. I am taking my last photo class at my university, and luckily it's a directed study class so its flexible.

So I was reading about the older *ist series cameras and the K100D and I was wondering ...

does the K100's viewfinder just as bright as the DS? From what I've read is that the DS is very bright and useful for people who manually focus and use manual focus lenses (i.e. older glass). I have a handful of old manual lenses and thought this would be a plus. Also, how is the high ISO reproduction on the K100D? I don't understand why it goes up to 3200 and the K10D does not. Kind of weird...

Anyway, I'm leaning towards the K100 for the SR but any thoughts from people who have had DS's is much appreciated! I'm just trying to see which has the better image quality.

Although the pics are fine on the Kingston card, I'd not use it for such a powerful camera as a K20D. I find them to be ticking time bombs until they corrupt, but hey, maybe you have a good copy.

If I were you I'd get a Sandisk Ultra or Extreme card, they are warrantied, have great write speeds (the Extreme is very fast!!) and come w/ recovery software. Best prices on newegg.com. Other brands would be Lexar/Toshiba.. everything else is garbage. Trust me, I've tried them.
