v6ii in that troubleshooting thread has 2nd curtain in ttl and manual – people use it and describe their tests there.

no cross-brand on cactus’ own environment sounds fake, even yongnuo doesn’t care if you use their canon remote to fire a nikon trigger long as they’re both in the 602 or 603 series.

---------- Post added 06-27-18 at 10:12 AM ----------

the troubleshooting thread i linked has people firing second curtain in manual, and in fact complaining that’s All they can do, with flashes supporting P-TTL. if the pop is happening only on manual and not on TTL (they describe getting only preflash and first curtain), that suggests the two are different processes.

that’s not happening instantaneously on two pins over radio. also, through the lens meansthrough the lens – the camera sends start and stop after determining when there’s enough light.

you wouldn't be using pentax ttl, you'd be shooting manually. which was done in the troubleshooting thread i linked, wherein people complained about Only being able to fire second-curtain in manual mode.

the cactus will fire whatever you connect to it, if it's worth a quarter.

nikons fire the second curtain pulse on center pin and sync port, and so work with every flash. if you're using cactus, a pentax transmitter to nikon receivers would be your guy.

whichever has a trailing sync pulse, or else you're making your own by putting a buffer inline between camera and flash to delay the firing signal.

---------- Post added 06-25-18 at 11:57 PM ----------

also here's a troubleshooting thread about the cactus v6ii wherein people having trouble with TTL second-curtain sync point out that manual second-curtain sync works fine so now we know that works.

doing it manually in T is a lot more complicated than the process i just described. the only T+flash shooting you'll see is light painting.

foveon doesn't need pixel shift, there's no mosaic, even on the quattro. also doesn't exist in 135. also there hasn't been a camera with a wide enough data bus for it not to be excruciatingly slow to offload after each shot. they are absolute beauties but there isn't enough camera for them yet.

---------- Post added 06-25-18 at 08:09 PM ----------

i wouldn't mind seeing a lower resolution and larger buffer. after spending some time with a z1-p and its 4fps burst that doesn't stop or even slow until the roll is done, digital cameras have been lacking in comparison, even as speeds have gone up.

with a manual flash, finding which shutter speeds work optimally for trailing sync is something you'd only need to figure out once at a given power level, and it'd be the same, every single time, barring malfunction.

and then you get tilt, shift and swing right at the image plane, it's perfect

the next pentax should probably just be a tiny 1x1.5" view camera

re: EVF *quietly mourns the k-01, whose focus peaking was great*
i've only had an easier time focusing with a fresnel screen. autofocus wasn't as good as on the SLRs, though.

yeah, i saw that someone had. i only need an adapter for the remote i already have, which is plenty familiar. it'd be a waste to cannibalize the pentax remote just for the connector, and i'm not at all into the idea of adding more equipment to my collection to keep track of.

thanks for the help, everyone. i'll be making a custom cable now that i know the pins. i have enough remotes and don't want to add to them, so this works much better.

by some complete accident, i've bought a z1p. pretty immediately i've come to love the thing – feels good to hold, seems like it'll shoot forever, it's damn solid. i'm wondering about what cable release might work with it, or how i can adapt it to work with a 3.5mm trs so that, if the time does come up i can fit this thing into my current lighting setup.

just got a fotodiox sq-pk adapter to use my bronica lenses on my pentax bodies, but the second i lock the adapter into the body all functions blank out and the shutter does nothing. take the adapter off and the camera is perfectly happy to shoot without a lens. is there something i can do to fix this?

24 or 36 or 50 for new FF

there are two dslrs over 24Mp and neither's demonstrated anything beyond what the rest can do.

also, sports, events and press are professional areas, they can't reverse from themselves. be specific when talking about professionals, it's not an amorphous and homogenous field. do pet, portrait and forensic photographers need resolution at the expense of speed and robustness? what are the needs of real estate and architectural photographers, in comparison? fashion? medical? helps to specify -- i do portrait -- anything over 10Mp is overkill and ISO is almost never above 800.

as to why your product photographer friend uses a d810 -- it's half the price of a d4s

i crop for print aspect only and in batches, the rest i do with the camera ("they" is me; photography is exclusively what i do for a living). if you know the shot you're trying to get (which you do, if it's the shot you have to take week in and week out even as the subject and location change), why wouldn't you take that shot with your camera while you're on location rather than add extra (free) work later if you can help it?

also you can go to print from a half-resolution base image and nobody would know the difference -- and you'd still have an image at a higher resolution than most people's monitors and tv screens.

i compose my shots and crop the world with the camera, the old-fashioned way. any further crops are a matter of fitting an aspect ratio for print, exclusively.

higher fps, faster af, better snr still.

after 24 you get rapidly diminishing returns to the point of nill as to how much resolution an increase in photosites in a given area can add. if you want more pixels, get a bigger sensor. the 645z is pretty great, i hear, and the d before it was no slouch, either.

not really (not that it has anything to do with this)

resolution you can't use -- because of the limits of bayer sensors and current lens resolution in concert. pictures would be sized right back down to be sharp again.

sony's got a newly introduced 12Mp camera working low light miracles
nikon's 16Mp D4 series and canon's 18Mp 1D series are at the top of sports and event photography and still in production with new bodies recently introduced

i've yet to see a 5ds or d810 in the wild, but those lower res bodies have been in the field for years as solid workhorses showing no signs of stopping. this isn't like memory where one number going up represents the entire march of progress (which is also not true of memory -- it's gotten faster and bandwidth has gone up along with the density) -- if the actual information recorded is not increasing, a higher sample rate per a given area ("megapixels" in a given format) won't increase resolution. the 24Mp ff limit is also not a matter of "nobody needs more than that" -- obviously in a camera we hope to record all the information we possibly can, and for anyone looking to get all that data, the phaseone iq series is available if you're willing to put up your house as collateral (with 80Mp at 1:1 with 645 format, meaning fat pixels the whole way) -- the limit is physics. again, there are only two ff slr cameras over that limit, they're brand new, they're still not performing better than the 18Mp and 16Mp flagships in their lines.

that's because it's true at any resolution you shoot at.

stick a dang scanner on it and you've got yourself a digital 67

or just shoot film and scan it. or shoot film and have it scanned. a roll of slide film purchased and sent away for processing and scanning is about $30 vs the second mortgage you'd have to take out to afford a 67 format sensor of any type

you can also make your own 6x7 sensor

there's no point to going over 24 on a 35mm sensor (or 16 on aps-c), i'd rather see a low pixel count with better color calibration and higher snr than even a 36-40Mp 35mm camera, let alone a 50. for more resolution, there's the z.

it's probably gonna be 36 though.

aps-c is 2/3 of ff though it'd be more like 50~33, 36~24, 24~18 wouldn't it?

there's the 31 fa limited, the sigma 35 art, a sigma 24-70 zoom and samyang/tokina/rokinon lenses that go even wider, and zeiss 25 & 35 screwmount lenses, to say nothing of all the available lenses going back to the beginning of the k-mount and the m42 screwmount.

there are two ff dslr cameras over 24 megapixels. canon's flagship is at 18, nikon's 16, each with great af, low noise and fast burst, great ergonomics and calibration options absent from lower end cameras. Mp in particular seems like not even a secondary consideration for ff cameras. nobody who's handled cameras would consider a 1DC or a 5D Mk III a downgrade from a rebel t6 even though the rebel has higher resolution; nor a d4s a downgrade from a d7200; a 24Mp or lower ff pentax wouldn't be considered a downgrade from a k-3.
