Should I finally invest in a K-1?

You have very good set of full frame lenses already. I have 31, 43, 77 and FA 100 macro myself and I have enjoyed all of
them more with K-1 than I did with K-3.

Broken gear in autofocus

I think clamping and silver soldering is more durable way to do it. The whole AF gear assembly was not very expensive so I wouldn't bother unless you have all the tools already. Especially when new gear assembly is available.

Old thread but I think someone could be interested. AF gear went broke from my FA 31 Limited. It's an old made in Japan version.

So I contacted to Kameraservice Kungsör which is Pentax repair for nordic countries. I asked if they can deliver me a new AF gear assembly. They replied quickly that they can order one from Japan. And they did. Today I received the AF gear assembly and installed it to my 31 Ldt.

AF is smoot again and it works flawlessly.

Here are both AF gear assemblies.

SMC F 70-210 is a small and light option to use while waiting for the new 70-200.

K-5 IIs which I gave to my wife when I bought K-1.

K-5 IIs fixed the poor AF in artificial light which was huge improvement over K-5. Also the lack of AA filter was instant wow with increased sharpness. K-5 IIs is still great camera.

DA 35/2.4 has significantly smaller front element diameter than FA 35. I think f/2-2.1 is most likely not true.

New 2.0.2 has been on Google Play since yesterday. I got it working with Nokia 6.1 and K-1 ONCE. No connection after that.

Still a lot better than other 2.0.x versions which never connected to K-1. Have to try again later. Reboot phone etc.

---------- Post added 02-01-19 at 09:02 PM ----------

They added this note to Google Play "In some cases, it would take time until connected."

My guess is they simply added more time to connection build. At least with my phone it tries longer before timeout.

11-18 and revamped 35mm F2 on january 31?

I hoped new version of DA 17-70 for years. I had two units of 17-70 and I was very pleased of image quality of them. Also the overall feel was good other than poor af motor which failed in both lenses. Sadly the af motor ruined the reputation of the otherwise excellent lens.

I agree. Huge improvement to AF accuracy and improved image quality (K-5 IIs). To me it was bigger improvement from K-5 than K-3 was from K-5 IIs.

Any one use Sigma 20-40 DG on K1?

I did a quick test between FA 20-35 and FAJ 18-35. Please note I had do it in hurry while looking after my kids so I doubt the images may be front focused. Sorry no real world images now.

You can download the images from here. "Lataa kansio" bottom right corner.

Wide angle tests

To me FA 20-35 is clear winner.

I also took some images with DA 16-45. Not worth using it with K-1 IMO.

At 20mm both FAJ 18-35 and FA 20-40 have roughly the same amount of barrel distortion. At 35mm FA 20-40 has little or no distrotion while FAJ 18-35 is distorted. I try to take better test images some day and post results here.

Now I sure the corner softness issue with FA 20-40 is actually field curvature. When focused to corner the softness is only in very extreme corner. I still need to shoot more with FAJ 18-35 to check if it is the same wiht it.

Another option to check is FAJ 18-35. I have it and FA 20-35. To my surprice FAJ may be the better one from the two. Pretty close to each other at least with my copies.

EDIT: I did get K-1 two weeks so my experience between FAJ 18-35 and FA 20-35 still bit thin. Just did a quick test and I think I keep FA and sell FAJ.

However corners of FA 20-35 has been worse than I hoped them to be with K-1. Again FAJ 18-35 has been better than I though it to be.

Very new FF owner here.

K-1 is not much bigger than K-3. Viewfinder is excellent. My prime set starting from 24 mm makes much more sense now. FA* 24 is fantastic on K-1. K-1 images are clear step up from K-3.

So the first thought is very happy.

K-1 mkII , a step back?

Exactly. The reason Pentax has not brought us mk II level continous af to K-1 with firmware update is lack of processing power.

I too disagree.

Unfortunately I don't have both cameras to test them against each other. Actually I don't have either yet but K-1 is coming. I did some research before I made the decision to order K-1.

Here is one thing I found from dpreview raw files. ISO 1600. Raws developed by Silkypix Pro 8.

First image: All shapening and noise reduction set to 0. K-1 II is a bit smoother and little less color noise.

Second: Color noise reduction added to K-1 side. Nothing else. K-1 side is now much more clear and detailed. Color noise visible in Mk II side.

Third: Color noise reduction added to mk II side too. A bit of color noise left in K-1 side, but mk II looks more messy IMO.

---------- Post added 06-25-18 at 04:47 PM ----------

Of course we taking very small differences here. After examining files from internet it feels it is pretty easy to clean K-1 files to match noise levels of K-1 II in post processing.

Benefits of mk II are hand held pixel shift and better AF IMO.

I agree camera should deliver best image it can. The problem is there are situations when noise reduction in K-1 II reduce image quality instead of increasing it. There are examples in other threads.

I agree in most of time the processing in K-1 II seems to do great job. Therefore there should be best of both ways solution where user can choose when to use the processing.

The main priciple of system camera is to let photographer decide how to use it. What lens to use, shooting parameters, lightning, post processing etc. Especially at the level where K-1 this should main design principle to belive photographer is able to decide when more noise recuction is needed and when not.

You can always add noise reduction in post processing but can not pull the lost details back. Limiting photographers possibilities to choose how to processes images is the worst part here IMO.
