[New video Oct 27] New information about upcoming APS-C flagship model

One use of two card slots is to write to two cards simultaneously, creating a mirror backup as you shoot. How does this work with a fast UHS-II card and a slower UHS-I card in the second slot?

The price of the K-1 ii has often changed. For a while, Adorama had a K-1 ii + grip bundle for $1799, dipping to $1699 at one point. I've also seen just the K-1 ii body go to $1599 at Kenmore Camera. There have also been similar bundles with the K-1 ii and DFA 28-105 lens, for around $2000. End of month sales are common, when someone needs to make quota.

Interestingly, on the black model it has the SR button on the left, above the RAW button. On the silver model shown, it has the Lock icon on the same button instead.

April Fools - Pentax D FA 35mm f1.4 may be down the pipeline??

Has there ever been a plausible explanation for why Pentax has never made a 35mm f1.4 lens (aside from the M prototype)? It's been made by practically every other camera manufacturer, even from old manual focus days.

Pentax dealers

Yes, they were marked as CLOSED on 8/29/19, and are literally crossed-out on the list.

By my count, that makes 20 dealers on the official Ricoh Authorized US Dealers list which are no longer in business.

Don't know why a 72Mp FF or 48Mp APS-C is a 'logical' progression. There are several updated cameras which didn't increase MP counts - Canon 1Dx Mk III has same 20Mp as prior model, Sony a9ii has same 24Mp as prior model, Nikon D780 kept the same 24Mp as the D750, etc. Nikon D6 is also rumored to keep 20Mp.

I could see a Ricoh full-frame DSLR using the Sony 42Mp BSI sensor that has been out a couple of years and might be available at a good cost. And the only rumor for the APS-C replacement due this year is the Sony 26Mp sensor.

I keep a spreadsheet of Ricoh's Authorized US Dealers that has more information. Most of the 'authorized dealers' listed by Ricoh don't have any mention of Pentax products on their websites, or have only odd bits of used Pentax equipment. Sadly, this list continues to shrink...

New information about new flagship's selling date

Historically, Pentax has introduced new cameras at CP+. The K-1ii, KP, K-1, K-S2, MX-1 and K-01 were all officially announced before CP+, usually the week before the show starts. They have also announced other cameras at times not connected to a major show or conference (K-3ii, 645z,GR,K-30).

I certainly expect to hear more info at CP+, but am feeling a little less optimistic about an 'official' product announcement.

The original limited lenses are full-frame and quite compact for what they deliver (esp. the 43mm). No reason why new FF limiteds can't also be compact. They aren't star lenses, and can be offered at apertures that allow more compact designs.

Purchase dilemma - KP or new APS-C flagship?

Considering we know nothing of the specs or release date of the new APS-C camera, and the awesome price on the KP now, if the KP can do what you need, then you should get it.
If you like the new APS-C camera when it comes out, you can sell your KP here, and upgrade to the new camera.
If you don't like the features or price of the new APS-C camera, then hey! you've already got a new KP at an awesome price.

interview with Ricoh Imaging General Sales Manager for Europe

Yes, Ricoh said that focusing was improved on the K-1ii, but "improved focusing" wasn't some new hardware bit or bob they could point to. Exact same # AF points, same AF module, etc. Same with boosted ISO vs the K-1 - it wasn't something 'new' on the K-1ii. The accelerator chip, however, was a new hardware addition. You could see a picture of the chip. They didn't change the sensor, or even the buffer, but they did add a "new" chip to the motherboard. Therefore that was the "new" thing that the K-1 offered. The marketplace is harsh towards products seen as "refreshes" (witness the initial "Is that all?" response to the Sony a9ii)

Since the accelerator chip was "the new thing" on the K-1ii, it received more attention than the same chip on the KP or K-70, which offered other hardware improvements or changes vs previous models. Since they could make direct 1:1 comparisons to the K-1 without the accelerator (again, all other hardware was the 'same') it became easy to criticize. Much more difficult to compare, say the K-70 with the accelerator to the K-S2, since there were additional hw differences between the two, most notably a different 24mp sensor.

Well, that's because the accelerator was (almost) the only difference between the K-1 and the K-1ii. There were no other significant hardware spec changes, so that's all people could focus on.
At least with the KP, the reviewers could talk about the new control layout and interchangeable hand-grips.

New information about new flagship's selling date

I meant that when the K-1 was coming we first saw it shown under glass, then we learned the name would be K-1, then it would have 36mp before official announcement. We have seen the K-new body under glass, but not yet with a lens mounted. Nor have any other specs leaked out or been revealed. If it is on track for CP+ 2020, then some details are likely to be known before then. I was just hoping that Ricoh would have revealed another tidbit or two around the 27th. Not worried.

Was hoping Ricoh would confirm a detail or two about the K-new this month. I believe they let the name for the K-1 slip out in Nov 2015. Just confirm something to keep us on alert and excited for the new camera while everyone is giving discounts for the holiday season

Noted. Previous Pentax prototypes have been shown without the SD card markings. The K-1 did have the SD XC logo when shown under glass at PhotoPlus in 2015. I would bet that the SD cards will be upgraded to UHS-II, to handle 4K video and/or high-fps bursts.

New K-series DSLR under development to be exhibited

Pentax has often left off the SD labels in pre-production prototypes. Also note there is no label on any of the buttons to indicate card switching (no SD1/2 label). Indeed, the 645D prototypes had tape covering over the SD card labels underneath the top LCD and the SD switching label was not printed next to the DISP button.

There's been no indication Ricoh will switch from SD cards, though UHS-II support would be good, especially if the camera supports 4K video or high FPS.
There's really no room for CFast cards, SATA SSD's like Sony's Atomx are huge by comparison. CFExpress cards use much faster NVMe with XQD form factor. This *might* fit in the new body (esp. if there is only one slot), but again, no indication that Ricoh plans to use anything besides SD cards.

The rumor was that it would be the 26MP sensor used by Fuji, but Sony also makes 24MP BSI sensors that would be suitable with high readout and 4K video. We'll wait and see.

Only one Pentax dealer left in Norway?

Dodd Camera is still listed as an Authorized Ricoh Dealer. If they no longer carry your products in their store, offer only a meager selection of leftover items on their website and are no longer visited by the Ricoh/Pentax sales rep, they they are effectively no longer a dealer for your products. Sadly, this is true for the majority of dealers on the official Ricoh Authorized Dealer list. See my summary of US Ricoh dealers.

If it is like previous models, we should get a couple of rumors or hints about the name in November, and see some more photos of it under glass or with a lens mounted at some dealer event.
In Dec, we should get strong 'hints' about some basic features (megapixels, whether it will support 4k video, AF points, etc).
In Jan, someone will leak 'confirmation' about the sensor, fps, video or viewfinder.
About 1 week before CP+ we should see leaked low-res photos from a brochure or manual.
About 1-2 days before the official announcement, we'll have leaked 'official photos' and name and list of specs.
I'd expect it would be officially announced the week before CP+.
It will be the star of the Ricoh booth, along with the 11-18 and a newly announced lens. (70-200 f4?)
We'll get a new lens roadmap, and a prototype of the next lens to be developed (85 f1.4?) under glass.
The cameras at CP+ will be fully working models, but it won't ship until March 2020.

At least that's what I think is probable regarding the new camera.

This would follow the pattern of the K-1 release: shown in Oct as an unnamed prototype under glass, then in Nov with a (rumored) name. Announced at CP+ in Feb, shipping in April. We'll see.
