Foggy morning in Cartago, CR. This lady was heading out for train tickets. The bench created this flowing line along with the wet floor.

This was pretty early in the year. At first, I saw the guy on the far right and thought it would be interesting. Just when I was setting the camera, the guy most to the left entered the frame, then I thougth it would be interesting to shoot them in opposite directions of the frame, so I waited for him to walk to the other side. When he was aproaching these guys appeared walking faster in the first plane. My mind was blowing as I realized the chances, and well... waited a bit longer (you know this things happen in seconds, but you feel like it is forever hoping everything fits in its place) and there you have it. Hope you like it :)

I bought a Sunpak PF20XD flash. It wil give you some extra power as it comes with a pre-flash override mode, so it will sync just fine with the MX-1 pop-up flash

Is it my imagination or is there something inscribed in the front side of the hump?

It looks awesome BTW, seems like they wanted to make as many functions as possible accesible without using the main LCD. Those 5 user modes are great. Can't thing I'd ever need to use them all :P

Well... a little bit out of cameras' topics, but they just announced a revamped sport optics line: Birding Optics-PENTAX Optics for Birding This is an important market for them as well, and it is good since these guys haven't made any major upgrade to this line in years. They seem to have new coatings, and that could translate to some further developments in lenses in the near future.

Very smart design for bikers as well. You can set it up on the bar and control it very easily from there watching at the screen from the most natural position.

Most probably and entry level SLR... I don't think this is mirrorless since I can see a mirror there, and the hump is way too big for an EVF. I'm more interested in the size... it look pretty pretty small.

I nominate this shot. It's an uncommon aproach to pet shots, it was pretty well captured and shows Royal in a pretty candid and curious way.

Accesories for MX-1?

Oh,tricky design then :P It would be nice if you like using it with the bracket, but I agree that handholding it is (at least for me) more convenient in most situations.

@Spodeworld There's a little switch in the back of the flash for x-sync, pre-flash suppression slave and regular slave. It needs to be on the pre-flash suppression slave mode.

@Steve.Ledger I agree with the Godox being pretty similar, but I'm a bit picky with these things .I just liked better the power control on the Sunpak and to be honest haven't seen the Godox till now. I was actually thinking about the Metz 20 C-2, but I hated the color and the fact of it having the bracket integrated. I think it is a matter of preference. It is my imagination or the Godox has a swivel head? that looks cool

Accesories for MX-1?

Ok, I've tested the Sunpak flash during the weekend. What I mostly liked over the Godox is the size and functionality. This thing is pretty small, pretty close to a card deck. The other function that really shines is the easily accesible manual mode. I love being able to hand hold it and bounce it whenever I find suitable and adjust the power acordingly on the fly. On the bad side, it is completely useless outside. Even on a cloudy day. You need both your subject and the flash to be in the shade.

If you want to bounce it onto a low ceiling (my house is around 2,60m) I've set the MX-1 flash to -2 and pointed the Sunpak to the ceiling at 1/8 in the manual setting. Subject around 2m away, f/2.8 ISO 100. Obviously, different situations would require a different setting.

I'm attaching 2 pictures, first one with the onboard flash only, set to -0.3. The second one was shot with a setup pretty similar to the mentioned before, but I bounced the flash into a wall on my back since subjet was too close for a nice ceiling bounce. I like the results so far, light is a lot more even and flattering, and the horrible harsh shadows from the onboard flash are almost gone. Maybe I should have increased the power 1 stop on this one... but model was playing and it was hard enough to get these 2 some shots :P

Best thing about it is that you can get creative and use it a hairlight - backlight combined, or used as a side light. I'm even thinking on getting a second one in order to create more interesting setups .

I made this image testing this Sigma lens during a morning walk near a farm in Llano Grande, Cartago - Costa Rica. This is an elevated and usually cloudy place. There I found this very rough scene of these old posts with some clouds on the back reflecting the morning sun. I decided to go down on the floor to give it a stronger persepective. The square composition made it for a more balanced image.

I just got a Sunpak PF20XD flash. It is a small (GN 20m) and light flash with both auto function and manual control. It has pre-flash suppresion so you can use it along with the MX-1 onboard flash.

I've been testing it and it works wonders for bounced flash, setting the onboard unit to -2. I'll try it on the streets this weekend and show you some results

K-3 AC adapter

From another post:

"From previous threads here and PMs with another member:

The adapter for the K-5 and K-7 (K-AC50) works fine with the K-3, if you already have one. I have used mine and it works fine.

Also note that the K-AC1202U adapter for the K-01 (in stock and $10 cheaper) seems to have the Switching AC Adapter D-AC120 module that the K-AC132 has, according to the In the Box info. Plus you get the adapter-to-K-01 coupler!

[Seems a bit disingenuous of Pentax to sell the K-3 adapter for a higher price, IMO.]

The new adapter seems to be needed because of changes in EU regulations regarding such things. I don't know the details, but think it has to do with environmentally friendly materials.

Cheers,
Lou

K-mount lens roadmap updated

Given the focus Ricoh is trying to give on WR, the new lens WILL be either * or AW. I say this since there's still the chance they will replace the whole * line, make it HD and probably get rid of the SDM motor. It would make perfect sense that this lens was FF capable if they are actually considering a FF camera in the horizon, as they need to create a system first. They have been working on in-lens IS for the 645 line, so this could have some use in order to make new FF glass with IS, and avoid the technical problems of fitting a shifting sensor inside a K-mount. Just my 2 cents.

Saying Hello from Costa Rica

Hi Pentax people. I've been a long time reader of the forum but I finally decided to join today.

I work selling and promoting Pentax gear in Costa Rica. We are a little store and the market is reduced and mostly dominanted by you know whose... But we are proud to give the best brand support in the country.

I am also working my way as an amateur photog. I love shooting film, specially b/w since I can process it myself. It's a shame there are no good color labs here, but that's another story. If you ever need something gear related, or if you're planning to visit our country, don't hesitate on leaving me a message :).

Greetings from Central America...

Alberto
