Ideas needed for broken screw on Pentax Spotmatic

I love all the brainstorming, this is really helping - thanks everyone!

Just a small update. I didn't end up having a lot of time last night to work on it, but I did realize there was a lot less sticking up than I had thought and I couldn't get my needle nosed pliers to grip it. Because there's not a lot of space, I discarded my dremel idea and instead thought I could file a slot. That sort of worked, but not enough to really get leverage on it.

I got around it like others suggested and was able to get to the spot I needed to for the repair. I'll spend some time better planning the final repair process for this, as it will likely take equipment I don't currently have.

While I feel annoyed that I broke the camera in the first place, and then that while trying to repair it I broke it further, I am looking on the bright side and saying it's been fun to take it apart and learn a bit more about how these cameras work under the hood. That's what keeps me sane, at least :P

It's too difficult to see in the second picture, but there is a little bit poking up. I would say at least 1mm, maybe not much more though. I'm not sure if the vampliers would have enough to grab in this case. I'll have to look into it again when I get home. Interesting idea about slotting it, there is a shallow remnant of a slot still in it, so maybe it wouldn't be much harder to just make that a little deeper with a dremel.

Never seen this before, good option.

Yes, I do think that is what happened. I had reviewed some videos and forum guides before proceeding, but really should have been following along as I had forgotten that this screw could have been reversed. I think I just applied force in the wrong direction and *snap*!

Thanks!

Awesome, I hadn't seen these before. Good option. Good idea about using something to loosen it up. Thanks!

I had only heard of the drill method before, the screw extractors seem like a really good route. Good to know about JB weld not having enough torque.

Thanks!

Hey all,

I have an old Spotmatic that I am trying to remove the top plate to check into an issue I'm having with the shutter button being stuck down.

When removing the center screw on the film advance lever, the head of the screw broke off, letting me take the plate with the shot counter off, but obviously the screw is still inside the mechanism preventing further progress.

I'm looking for ideas for how to get it out. I have a parts donor that I can use the replace the screw once I'm done. I have thought of maybe JB welding something to the top so I can screw it out, but it's so small I don't know if I want to risk getting the weld on any of the rest of the pieces...

Any ideas? I really like this camera, but I suppose at some point it's more effort than it's worth :p

Thanks. See the attached images.

I don't know how I've never heard of adapting Pentax-110 glass to anything other than the Q system. I just looked up some examples - I'm sold! Now to wait around local and online listings for a few months to strike a deal on a set of those lenses

Thanks for the heads up!

Hey all,

I am venturing into the Fujifilm world after snagging a random deal on this X-Pro1. I am going to really run it through it's ropes soon enough, but so far for shooting family it's been a lot of fun. I have no native lenses, just adapting my old Pentax glass to it. Seems good enough for me :)

Some of you may have seen my project where I made a similar wooden grip for my Pentax K1000. I've been enjoying that on my film camera, but wanted to give it another go because I had left over materials. The X-Pro1 seemed like a worthy candidate to receive one

The process is basically to set the colored pencils in a clear resin epoxy, and then carve it like you would wood. I then finish it with a clear gloss lacquer. It attaches via the tripod mount.

I didn't take as many pictures of the process as I did last time, but see the below pictures, and here's a video showing more of the process/angles of the grip:

Thanks for letting me share my projects :)

So, it's funny that I just now saw this thread. I picked up a K-7 locally a few months ago and was amazed at what a good camera it is and how comparable it is to the K-3, which I love. The title of this thread is very accurate. The K-7 started my favorite body design and feature set that lives on today. And we are coming up on it's 10th anniversary! Crazy.

I liked it so much I did a little review of it on YouTube here (which then I end up talking about video, funny enough. I have ended up using it for video quite a lot actually...)

And here are some of my favorite pictures with it:

Hello all,

Here is a series of nightscapes from the other night out camping. All with Rokinon/Samyang/Bower branded lenses

Bower 24mm f1.4, 13 seconds, 800 ISO
Milky Way Over Road by ThatA480Guy, on Flickr

Rokinon 14mm f2.8, 20 seconds, 3200 ISO
Milky Way Over Road by ThatA480Guy, on Flickr

It's interesting to me to compare those two lenses and the field of view/exposure differences.

Also, a first for me, astrotracer! I finally got it working after several minutes of fiddling around. Long story, but I was about to curse Pentax's name until I remembered it was my fault for never actually looking up how to do it xD

I was able to get usable images at a minute or even a minute and a half, but I found the absolute cleanest was 30 seconds. Still, amazing for a 135mm focal length! For someone who has taken nightscapes for a while, it was like magic seeing it work.

For everyone else:

The Pentax-FA* 400mm has SOLD and has been marked as such.

We are moving soon, so I am going to start slowly putting some of these items on eBay. I'll keep this post up to date, of course, so if it's still here and doesn't mention anything about being on eBay, then it's still here for the taking :)

Sorry, I think I confused you. It's the latest six pictures, so on the first page at the very top. When I am home I can rename the titles to make it more clear. There's a butterfly, bird, and dragonfly. Descriptions should have mention of the lens in them.

Sounds good, I can do both those things. I'll work with you via PM.

Thank you

It is available and I would be happy to answer your questions.

1) I only have shot this lens on two outings, so my experience is limited. I had read about the concerns as well. I also don't have a lot of experience with longer zooms in the first place, so I don't have anything to compare it to other than cheap zooms. The fringing is definitely there, but I didn't shoot anything where it seemed like a big deal to me. If the sun ever comes out again (it's been rainy for a week) then I could shoot a series of images setup to expose the weakness. That would actually be a fun video to make too, since there's not a lot of information about this lens out there generally.

2) I consider it very sharp, I had no complaints in this department. Any lack of sharpness I had was fixed by a higher shutter speed

3) I do not have the case/pouch.

I uploaded some sample photos and will get around to uploading more later. They are the six latest pictures on my Flickr account, showing full picture and significant crops on my K-1. ThatA480Guy | Flickr

Thank you.

Playing with a new toy that came my way unexpectedly. Pentax-FA* 400mm. Here are shots uncropped and then cropped, both to show the power of this lens and also this camera.

Also, as a side note, I now have an even larger respect for wildlife photographers. I was struggling so hard to get anything living in the frame, haha.

Hello all,

This is my first for sale post on this forum. I have done a lot of selling on forums in the past for different hobbies, I also have an eBay account (james8660) with lots of feedback. I accept PayPal.

Please contact me if you need more details or pictures, I want to make sure you are absolutely happy with your purchase :)

All of these items are used, and I am not the original owner.

I ship USPS priority mail. Shipping price is built in. If you buy multiple items, depending how they fit, I can definitely save you some money and combine shipping.

I chose my prices based on searches here and on eBay (subtracting out the cost eBay takes from me, to pass the savings on to you!) I am not opposed to offers, especially if you can show me that it’s overpriced.

This works sort of like those dinner meals you get at restaurants, which include a bread roll and your choice of sides. The lenses will include (for free) your choice of one lens filter that corresponds to the size of lens, and the camera bodies will include (for free) your choice of one small camera bag. Of course, if you don’t want either that’s fine too. This is done on a first-come-first-served basis.

Pentax-FA 28-105mm $40 shipped
Looks to be in good condition, with some light signs of use but otherwise looks new. Comes with Pentax front and rear caps.
Original owner smoked, and despite my best efforts there is still a slight tobacco smell. If you have any tips let me know
Includes your choice of 58mm filter. (See below.)

Pentax-FA 100-300mm 4.5-5.6 $40 shipped
Looks to be in good condition, with some light signs of use but otherwise looks new. Comes with Pentax front and rear caps.
Original owner smoked, and despite my best efforts there is still a slight tobacco smell. If you have any tips let me know
Includes your choice of 58mm filter. (See below.)

Pentax-DA* 16-50mm $280 shipped + insured SOLD $260
The glass itself is in fantastic condition, not a scratch or mark. The rubber on the lens has a weird light white shade to it, which I am not sure the cause as I got it that way. It isn't sticky or anything, but it's there. Comes with Pentax front and rear caps and lens hood.
Original owner smoked, and despite my best efforts there is still a slight tobacco smell. If you have any tips let me know
Includes your choice of 77mm filter. (See below.)

Tamron 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 K-mount $80 shipped
Glass is clean, but this lens suffers from the same white marking on the rubber that the DA* 16-50 does. They both came from the same owner, so that could be why. Otherwise, works and looks in good condition. Comes with front and rear caps and lens hood.
Original owner smoked, and despite my best efforts there is still a slight tobacco smell. If you have any tips let me know
Includes your choice of 62mm filter. (See below.)

Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 LD Di-II XR AF IF K-mount $70 shipped SOLD
It's in good condition. There are no scratches on the glass elements. Comes with both caps and the lens hood.
Includes your choice of 62mm filter. (See below.)

Pentax-FA* 400mm F5.6 $1100 shipped + insured SOLD
In excellent condition. Some light marks where the lens hood attaches that I have shown in the picture. Glass is clean. I do not have a lens cap, but I will include a UV filter (that is kind of coming apart) to at least protect it in transit. For some reason I only have one 77mm lens cap. This is obviously a big ticket item, so I am willing to work with you if you want particular videos or pictures of it in use.

Includes your choice of 77mm filter. (See below.)

Good condition. Comes with front and rear caps.
Includes your choice of 49mm filter. (See below.)

Takumar 28-80mm f4-5.6 $20 shipped
Good condition. Comes with front and rear caps.
Includes your choice of 49mm filter. (See below.)

Pentax *ist DL body + 18-55mm kit lens $90 shipped SOLD on eBay
Shutter count just under 1k. The camera generally looks brand new except for the eye cap with is chipped in several places, which I can't figure out why, it's just really fragile. This of course doesn't hinder the use of the camera, but could get annoying with the right user. Lens includes cap and hood. Lens is in good condition.
Includes your choice of small camera bag. (See pictures.)

Pentax K-7 body $120 shipped SOLD
Shutter count just over 20k. Comes with battery, charger, body cap. Camera itself is in good condition, with only light signs of use. Shows some of that similar light white wear on the grip, pictures should show it. I'm starting to think that's me at this point, not sure what causes it
Includes your choice of small camera bag. (See pictures.)

Wow, thanks for all the nice comments! I'm glad you all like it so much. And from such a talented and creative group, it means even more :D

It screws in the bottom into the tripod mount. I'm glad you asked, because I just realized I never actually showed it in the video. I added a picture to my original post if you want a reference.

The original idea to make a wood grip for a DSLR (in my case a K-1, as if that camera can get any larger) is still in the back of my mind, but I haven't come up with a good, least destructive way yet. Also, I need real tools xD.

But yes, on my mind...

Glad someone can be honest  Thanks for the boost of positivity. I appreciate it.

This took me a second, and then made me chuckle out loud. :p

Hey everyone, I thought there may be some interest in sharing this here.

After getting inspired by the Pentax KP custom with a wooden grip that was shown off recently, and then watching some viral videos about making things from colored pencils, I decided to give it a go but with a camera grip.

I realize not everyone is gonna jive with the style, but I think it looks pretty cool.

Here are some pics of a the process, and there's a video at the end with more details.

What do you think?

I was lucky to come upon a cheap lot with a Pentax Ist DL recently and had a blast with it.

I made a video with more of my thoughts. It's mostly silly, but check it out anyway if you want:

Just throwing out yet another plug for keeping the K-3.

I was in the same position as you last year. I stumbled upon a VERY good deal for a K-1 that meant selling my K-3 + 18-135mm + $100 would pay for the K-1. Of course, I jumped on it having been lusting after the K-1 for a while (particularly for astrophotography/nightscapes). I am on a very tight budget, so even tacking on $100 was about all I could do. I wish I would have asked on this forum and received the advice you have, because like many have said, jumping into full-frame on a budget can become extremely constraining, and while I have a bigger budget now than I did a year ago, I am still working to get even a basic set of lenses to cover my wants and needs, and I've missed many photo opportunities in the meantime.

For example, while I have loved the astro/nightscape photos and think the K-1 has helped with that, I missed some great moose pictures twice simply because I have nothing beyond a 75mm lens while I have been saving up towards the 70-200 Tamron. I could have easily snapped that on my K-3 with an inexpensive tele and it would have looked fantastic.

I have thought many times of selling it and going back to the K-3, and maybe someday I will. All that being said, the K-1 is a fantastic camera, but it's not like I love my pictures now more than I did with the K-3 (makes you think...)

Hello all,

I am looking for a Samyang/Rokinon 135mm f/2 lens for my Pentax K-1. I've done quite a bit of research on it, but it's kind of hard to find used copies of the lens. As for price, like I said it's hard for me to even find old listings of this lens used, but I would assume in the 300-350's range would be fair, since a new copy can be obtained for $430 on B&H. You can of course correct me if I'm wrong :)

(Also if you don't have the lens but just have ideas of where to find it used, that would be great!)

Thanks!

Thanks, it's kind of fun!

Yeah, I was lucky in that I bought a used K-1 just a few weeks ago, otherwise I wouldn't be able to fiddle around with it either. I haven't checked out PK_tether, is it still around? I agree with not reinventing the wheel if there's already a solution.

That's a really creative idea! I like it. I haven't done a ton of digging yet, but I did de-compile the SDK to check a few things out with how it's detecting Wi-Fi connections. I'm not experienced with a Java application accessing Wi-Fi information, so I don't immediately know how to do this, but I bet a little bit of research would show some options. If I have some time during this week I'll look into it. :)

Seems like you're not the only one interested in desktop tethering! Let us know if you tap into a solution first. Otherwise, I'll share whatever I find out. I don't have any commercial interest, so I'm just here to learn and help.

Hey y'all,

I had a hard time figuring out where to post this, so feel free to help me find a better section (I don't know if a mod can move this or I can post again elsewhere). I figured it fit pretty well here, since it's all about Pentax DSLR's.

I am curious with the new release of Pentax's SDKs who here has been working on stuff, and what they've been working on. I've been following the thread in the announcements, and it seemed like a couple of people had some ideas, but I wanted a place where we could bounce those ideas back and forth, along with some help for one another in development.

So far I have been playing with the wireless Android SDK and some basic features. I'm not really sure if there's anything specific I want to try, I was mostly just curious. Seems like most of the features available there's already an app for, but I'm sure it'll grow from here.

If anyone needs help getting started with Android, I can be of some assistance. I even made a quick video on my dev channel about it because it took me three hours to figure the darn thing out (I can be slow sometimes )

What are some of your ideas? Need any help? Who's already started?
