FA31 substitute

If you've ever shot with the FA31 and loved it, is there a substitute? On *any* system? My story: the FA31 was my favorite lens and I've regretted selling it four years ago (I was chasing FF and went to another system). I've had more expensive lenses, and lenses that test better, but I have never "love" a lens like the FA31 (and yes, I've had the FA77). I know the lens can test poorly, but just something in the way the FA31 renders. I'm pretty it sure its bokeh can't be beaten for a 50mm-equivalent lens (and I have the Sigma 50 1.4) . So I'm thinking of getting a FA31 and a cheap K-01 body, but how much of this is grass-is-always-greener kind of thing? Specifically, what have you had on a body of any brand (aside from the exception below) that you liked better in the 50mm-e focal length?

Also, any experience using an FA31 with a Nex or MFT body?

-T

Edit: Leica-anything is out of my price range, so let's not go there :D

New strap

I use an Up strap myself. A stolen camera can be replaced; a broken neck or getting dragged along the pavement by a slash-proof wire-embedded camera strap is not such a good outcome.

Right! Like I believe that. That's one heck of good job all-around, including processing. It's a stunning photo.

Disappointed by the K7

I used the K10D exclusively for a year, actually, and I liked it a lot. The five features I listed are the big improvements (if going from the K10D I would also add AF micro adjustments). And that's my point; the features I *didn't* list are the fluffy ones that wouldn't make me upgrade.

I agree with Wheatfield; Pentax's marketing department did a fine job of positioning the K-7. There is no sense in competing with Canon and Nikon at the very top end. Therefore, offer a camera that the competition won't or can't. People who need the D700 or 5D MkII won't be swayed by the K-7, but potential 50D or D90 users will be very tempted.

Ok, let's take the K-7 specs and count the useful new features:

- small well built body
- .92X 100% view finder
- 5 fps
- better high ISO*
- better AF*

* remains to be seen how much better

Every thing else is fluff. Fluffy stuff that wouldn't make you upgrade from a K10D/K20D. The K-7 is a huge step forward for Pentax, but it's more of a marketing triumph than a technological one. And I mean this as a compliment; for too long Pentax had no clue how to market this stuff -- with the K-7 they are offering a truly unique DSLR.

why upgrade to K7 from K20D?

Long time followers of this forum will recall lots of bitching about high ISO noise and AF performance. And yet, Pentax comes out with a new camera that seems to have made only incremental improvements in those two critical areas, and everyone goes gaga. What short memories we all seem to have. I'm just saying...

That's because you don't know how to use a flash.

The 1/180th x-sync is quite peculiar in an otherwise stellar spec list.

There's just something in the way the FA Ltd renders. The OP said it already, but it bears repeating: these lenses have soul. I sold off my 31 and 77 to buy some Nikon gear (boo, hiss, I know, but ISO 2500 was calling), but I know I'll be back soon, when I can afford to shoot two systems. These lenses are just too good.

K10 shutter/mirror noise

The K10D shutter is comparatively loud. It's not so much the "clack" as the tinny sound of the spring -- it sounds a bit like a screen door closing. A load "clack" can indeed sound reassuring; a screen door closing is, well, just a screen door closing.

Bump for the price drop. I would really like to sell this great lens to a US buyer. Although it doesn't move I might have to pick up a cheap K10D soon.

Voigtlander Macro Apo-Lanthar 125mm f2.5. Wonderful lens; only selling because I no longer have a Pentax digital body, and I'm not going to try shooting macro with film. Excellent condition, front and rear caps, metal hood and rubber cap, original box, packaging and paperwork, plus Hoya HMC UV filter. Asking $935 shipped and paypaled eCheck to CONUS. Please note that with eCheck it takes a few days for your payment to clear! Sorry about the new eCheck requirement, but with the lower price I'm try to get a little more cash out of the deal. Credit card is fine if you cover the fees.

I have excellent feedback here and 100% feedback on eBay.

I will only use trackable shipping with delivery confirmation.

Pictures on request.

Why my digital pentax bodies does not fit in my winter coat pocket

I'm looking at a digital body that has a focal plane mark, and there's quite a bit of thickness back there. It's easily 1CM. I've advocated dropping the LCD in order to get to most compact digital body possible. With a high-resolution EVF that can serve double duty as a way to review shots, I don't think it would be so bad. Such a body could be made extremely rugged too.

When I'm heading out with the family unit, I look longingly at my MX but I hardly ever grab it. I'd pay $1000 for a compact fully manual (I mean fully manual) DSLR -- an MX with a digital back would be killer. I'd even settle for APS-C or even slightly smaller sensor -- too bad the "digital film" vapor ware people never got their act together.

If you have a K10D to sell, you'd better do it soon, because a new low was reached in the marketplace today. Disclaimer: I'm in the market (sort of) for a K10D.

I second the GX200 rec. The GX200 comes sort of close to your specs (except for EVF and 3X zoom -- but the zoom range starts at 24mm). Prepare for a price shock though...

top reasons not to go FF

If you don't really care about the extra resolution (and that's the majority of us), the only things APS-C give up compared to FF are ultra wide-angle and DOF. Technically, there's no reason why they can't give us a super high-magnification viewfinder and high-ISO in an APS-C sensor. For example, take the 12MP sensor in the D3/D700, cut it in half, jam into D300 body, improve the viewfinder, and call it a day. Better yet, do the same thing but jam it into a K10D/K20D body ... the D300 is too big. I'll take such a 6MP camera over any available today.

Might it be true that people like their Pentaxes so much because Pentax made the right trade off given limited resources? Resources are always limited -- you have so much money, so much time, and so much man power. It'd be terrible if Pentax made the exact same trade offs as Canon/Nikon and end up with similar cameras.

BTW, this is a perfectly fine forum to bitch about Pentax AF; where else can people go to bitch about Pentax short-comings? On a Canon/Nikon board? It's all in good fun.

Pentax K20D vs Nikon D700 at The Online Photographer

The future is extremely bright for Pentax. Is there any doubt that a few short years from now, there will be a Pentax DSLR with the same high ISO capabilities as the D3/D700? Sensors are a commodity item; what's special are the lenses. I recently sold a lot of Pentax gear to get the D700 (I was a Nikon person for years until I started dabbling with Pentax), and I dearly miss the FA31/FA77 combo.

DA35 is very good lens without weakness, but too dull

I'm with OGL. The DA35 is nice enough, especially if you want 1:1, close focus, etc., but it doesn't have the glow of the FA31/49/77. It has a clinical sharpness, but lacks soul.

With so much vociferous praise for the DA35, why not a few dissenting voices. I find OGL's strongly worded opinions rather charming.

Pentax vs Nikon vs Canon - A Lens System Comparison

Nobody has pointed out the sheer size of the Canon 85/1.2, especially compared to the diminutive FA77. And I think you can currently get about three FA77 for the price of one 85/1.2. That said, the 85/1.2 is the one Canon lens that makes me occasionally contemplate selling my entire Pentax kit -- about US$5000 would get you the next Canon FF and that lens. Then I think about lugging that big thing around and come to my senses.

I think you misread RMabo's post. His point is that if Pentax intended to stop making cameras with screw drives they wouldn't have just released two new screw-driven lenses.
