It's gotten _REALLY_ expensive now. UPS and FedEx aren't better. Friend of mine found all carriers to be about $70 for an 8lb box....I've shipped stuff at that weight in the past and don't remember paying nearly that much! She got hit with a volume charge (charged for 24lbs.......) because it was 18x18x18, but that doesn't strike me as too big. :/

Flat rate boxes are about the only thing that's reasonably priced.

Item for Sale
Pentax MZ-S film camera in excellent condition

Asking Price
200.00 USD

Item Location
Houston, TX (United States)

Item Description
My foray into film photography was short lived and I have decided to sell my Pentax MZ-S film camera. I acquired it from a man in Japan a couple years ago. It seems whoever owned it before kept it quite well, as have I.

The few times I used it, it was a stellar performer for me. The autofocus works great and there's no issues with any screw-drive AF lens I attached; it worked nicely with the FA31, FA50, and FA77, as well as the DA*300. No problems with the exposure meter or anything with it. It really reminds me of using a DSLR, as far as a film camera can do.

I do have the manual but forgot to put it in the photos, so you will get that as well. I am including the rolls of film shown; these expired a little while ago and may not be good. I include them for your trial if you wish to experiment with the camera before taking it out into critical situations. I can also toss them and not send them if desired.

Camera and film:

Camera front:

Camera back:

Film will be removed before the camera is sent to you

Included Accessories:
Body cap (bayonet mount)
Four rolls of film (may not be good)
Two extra batteries (not depicted)
Manual (not depicted)

Shipping Policy:
Actual cost of shipping will be tabulated based on your location. Due to a number of recent troubles with the post office here in Houston (and the recent price hikes) , I think it's much safer to use UPS or FedEx. I'm flexible on all this, though.

International buyers: I will only ship to a Paypal confirmed address. I will not accept payment from you and then ship to a friend of yours in the USA for him to forward on. You are welcome to have a friend pay me with his account and verified Paypal address and then I will ship to him. What he does with it after that is between you and him--the transaction will be between him and me, then--and all risk is assumed to be yours once domestic delivery is received. I am, however, happy to ship it to your non-USA address on your Paypal account. Please check about customs fees and duties beforehand.

For those in the Houston area, local pickup can be arranged. I also travel frequently and may be visiting Los Angeles, San Diego, and Austin in the coming months.

I am parting with my like-new Pentax FA31 Limited lens. It just doesn't fit my needs as a photographer and the high value of the lens is not something I can justify keeping for something I can use so little. I've used it sparingly since acquiring this copy a year ago and it's in immaculate condition, as you see in the photos. No drops or optical issues with the lens ever.

All included items:

No Flash Portraits

Many take it as a point of pride. "I shoot in natural light only!"

But I just hear "I don't want to learn to work flash."

Well, I'm not going to go that far because I know many who don't use lights and they do some nice work. But they are much more limited in what they can do. Highly stylized (filtered) and tons of editing also tend to be hallmarks of their style, although this is not true of everyone who shoots natural light only.

And the "an ultra wide is anything shorter than the short edge of the sensor" still works too! Makes UWA 24mm or below of FF and 15mm or below UWA for APS-C.

A 35 isn't a wide-angle on a crop camera. It's a normal FoV lens. You need something like the DA21 for wide-angle.

The volume distortion on the outer 1/3s of the frame of the FA31 is incredibly significant and really makes it questionable for a lot of compositions. Probably better with the FA35 even if it's not quite as sharp.

The FA43 I think is garbage. I'm trying out the DA40 right now; not sure how much I like it.

I suppose you're right that there's a market. It will probably just result in those cameras being updated on long product cycles and not getting really cutting edge updates. There's still money to be had there but maybe not enough to sink major development money into.

In short: the market for the $500-800 camera dries up because the vacationer just doesn't see a need for such an item. The market for the $2000-3000 camera will always be there because those are professionals, serious hobbyists, etc. They're not going to be able to do what they need to do with a tiny sensor until someone changes the laws of physics.

I was shooting some art photos for a coworker of mine last night and she said this: "I could buy a nice camera and use it but what I can do with it is worse than what I can do with my phone." We weren't discussing cameras or anything but I think that comment is insightful: she doesn't feel a fancy camera helps her because she can't work it well. That's probably the situation for a lot of people.

Pentax K-1 Mark II DSLR camera detailed specifications leaked

Release dates, according to Amazon. These may be pre-sale dates but I know for sure the 150-450 was available in August 2015 because I played with one on my trip to B&H in that month.

150-450: February 2, 2015
24-70: September 24, 2015
15-30: February 17, 2016
28-105: February 17, 2016

K-1: early May 2016

The 70-200 I can't be sure of; it was supposed to come out in 2015 but it got delayed a few times. I think it actually was available for purchase before the K-1, however.

So, no, I'm not wrong. All of these lenses were either released at the same time as or before the K-1. Reading is tech.... "since the K-1 came out, we've gotten no new lenses."

I didn't expect a 42MP sensor. I didn't expect a ton of upgrade. But how about autofocus that works as well as cameras released in 2014? How about lenses that every other system has had for nearly a decade. I guess that is my problem. I expected anything. It seems around here, it is best to expect nothing.

No, the releases we haven't gotten in the past two years. We haven't gotten a single new full frame lens since May 2016. That's not a rumor. That's what's happened already.

---------- Post added 02-14-18 at 07:53 PM ----------

That's because it's actually growing elsewhere. Pentax hasn't bothered to fertilize or water the lawn. Of course it looks a bit brown.

---------- Post added 02-14-18 at 07:55 PM ----------

That might well be the case. But it's a chicken and the egg problem. If no one buys the products, there's no cash to make more. If there's no cash to make more, there's no products for people to buy. More generally, people don't buy into the system because there's not much in it. But then there's not much in it because people haven't bought into it. It's basically a Nash equilibrium that we're kinda stuck in the middle of.

The point is that they took the time to release a new product...that offers almost nothing new. Sometimes nothing is better than a half-ass answer. This is insulting, really.

Think of all the other products that we have not gotten.... a wide-angle prime (~35mm), a modern 50mm, a modern 85mm. Instead, we got a marginal update to an existing product after 2 years. Are there any engineers in their company left? That's my question. I don't know how they can go so long releasing so few products. It's like the team is one or two guys with no help. The time they spent on the K-1 Mk II could have been spent on any of those items.

At the end of the day, improving the image quality of the camera only goes so far when we're stuck with lenses from yesteryear. I get that Canon and Nikon recycle designs too and use a lot of their film era lenses with minor updates (Canon especially), but they do have a healthy stock of lenses designed for high resolution sensors. Pentax has few at the moment.

It seems that's the case. The issue is the AF tech. It's a good 5-8 years behind at this point. There's really no excuse for that now.

When I shoot at f/2 with the DA*55, the only high resolution normal lens for the K-1, my keep rate is like 20%, if that. I have to shoot 10 images to get one or two that are fully sharp; most are close but off by just a bit. I've really gotten tired of it. A new lens would be nice but it's been two years and Pentax still hasn't produced the 50mm we've been promised....

The image quality of the K-1 is quite good. That's not an issue, really. The product line, however, is. More than that, the message this sends is not one of confidence. It's been two years since the K-1 came out and we've gotten what for it? NOT ONE NEW FF LENS in that time. This update, to me, says "This is our product and our product line and it's not going to improve." Feels like the K-1 was a bone they threw to long-time Pentax users but they either don't have the interest or the resources to develop it into a product line that can remotely compete with the offerings from Canon and Nikon.

And I'm not even talking about having two hundred crazy lenses in weird focal lengths. A modern 35mm. A modern 50mm. A modern 85mm. We have none of those. The 24-70 is a rebadge. We've been waiting for two years for some of these products and gotten nothing.

A friend of mine had the 645Z and really loved the camera. The lack of third party support (i.e., his flash equipment which said it would work with HSS and just didn't despite his efforts) and a sense of "This is all I'm going to get" is what made him abandon it for Fuji. I may finally understand.

The biggest thing was the flash system...or lack thereof. He couldn't get half his stuff to work right with the Z. In particular, HSS was something he couldn't get working, despite his efforts. He's a true pro too (does advertising photos for a living), so it was truly impossible. There's lots of non-lens things to a system and Pentax doesn't compete in those regards, at least for his needs.

TBH, it was a major reality check for me in how limited the Pentax system can be. Even a great product like the Z has major limits that pros can't deal with.
